From the Author

It would make me crazy, hearing people misstate, and even mislead others about, what is in the United States Constitution.  Being the supreme law of the land, it's important to understand it.But nobody trusts sources anymore. We've been manipulated and led around for so long, I get that. So I ran every single word of the Constitution down one side of the page, and right beside it, translated the fancy words into a simple, 5th grade version of what it all means. It was important to me for every single word of the Constitution to be there, so anybody reading this can look at the original source and decide for themselves what it says. Since Constitution Translation for Kids was first released in 2006, hundreds of school districts - and many nonprofits dedicated to teaching civics - have adopted it as teaching material. Never let somebody else tell you what is in the Constitution, now you can see for yourself.

Thank goodness there are now authors who appreciate the younger audiences. If kids are exposed to our founding documents early in their academic grades, they will appreciate history more fully as they progress. I wish this book would have been available when I was younger. Buy this and another of my recommendations for students: "The Elementary Common Sense of Thomas Paine; An Interactive Adaptation for All Ages" here on Amazon. I have given copies of both these titles to my brother and extended family, and even donated copies to the local elementary and middle school.

Only two deficiencies I can see. (1) The militia is continually confused with the National Guard - a federal organization that didn't exist until one and a quarter centuries after the Constitution was written. (2) Ms Travis apparently can't distinguish between a restrictive clause and an independent phrase. Considering her task, though, I'm willing to cut her some slack: I'm selling my copy to a mother of two school-age daughters, rather than trashing it.

I have used this book several times for my college classes. I love the fact on the left column of the page is the actual wording of the Constitution and on the right column is the modern day language. Made it so easy to understand.

This excellent and easy to comprehend book is a MUST if you're learning or teaching the constitution. The pages are split down the middle. On the left are the words of the constitution, on the right is a reworded translation for children to easily understand the verbage without changing it's meaning. It is very clear, consise, and NON-INTIMIDATING! After struggling to create an interest in learning the constitution with my 3 homeschooled children ages 9-13, this has been what causes them to proclain History to be their favorite subject. I recommend this book.

I teach middle school Civics. When I heard Cathy Travis' interview on NPR, I ordered the book for my classes that were studying the Constitution. The students loved the book's explanations.

I finished the book in one sitting. This is a terrific product. Well written and very informative. Breaks it down so it's easier to understand! Recommended reading for anyone who needs a little history lesson since it isn't taught very well in the schools now!

Good.

I believe this book was very helpful to my children.

This book is great, but the execution is a bit strange. Instead of being a straightforward encyclopedia of the Adventure Time universe, it was written from the perspective of Marceline's dad Hunson Abadeer... who is essentially their world's devil. So all he does is make fun of the characters throughout the whole book and talk about how he'll enslave, murder, or soulsuck them. It's really creative, fun, and beautifully illustrated, but it might upset some younger kids who won't get the joke. I stopped reading it to my toddler who loves the series, because it confused her that it was so mean to characters she liked. Now she just enjoys looking at the artwork. But for an older kid or adult fan that loves Adventure Time I think it's great and carries on the offbeat nature of the show.

Written from the perspective of Hunson Abadeer, a minor character on the show Adventure Time, this book is a fun look at the world of Adventure Time through his eyes. The majority of the work centers around enumerating the major and minor characters of the Adventure Time show universe and giving general information about them as related through the episodes themselves. Further on in the book, there are a few additional chapters such as Ice King's "zine" about "Fiona & Cake", who will be familiar to most audiences of the show, and an Ooo Travel Guide by Princess Bubblegum. As an adult fan of Adventure Time, I was very pleased with the book and found it suitable to give to a friend's 10 year old son, who really enjoyed the book as well (he is a fan of the show). Note that while I have marked this book as "No Sex/Violence" (which is true), overly-sensitive parents might wish to be aware that there is a reference to two of the (non-human) characters running around "naked", and in one illustration, the male character Ice King is dressed up as a Sailor Moon knockoff (albeit very funnily within context). There is also one page that features a "plea" to remove the a character from the page in which he has been trapped. All in all, however, there is nothing particularly genuinely offensive in the book and as long as you stick with 10 and above, the content should be fine for most readers.

I absolutely love this book, the lore is incredible. The pictures are so bright and so vivid. It has everything that you could ever want to know about Adventure Time, you really won't find another Adventure Time book as informative and fun to read as this.

For those of you that don't know, Hunson Abadeer is not only the Lord of Evil, but also the father of Marceline the Vampire Queen. And he himself has compiled this unusually interesting book about all the people and places you know from the "Adventure Time" series on Cartoon Network. In this book, you'll find interesting biographies of a wide number of characters as well as a few things you may not know about them, too. Other things include special trading cards drawn by Ice King, an instruction manual for BMO, and intricate travel guides of all the places in the enchanted Land of Ooo among other bizarre stuff. And throughout these pages, you'll find notes and other scribbles courtesy of Finn, Jake, and Marceline, too, which make an interesting commentary of sorts. But don't get me wrong on this, but it seems that the Lord of All Evil knows a lot about things and beyond and makes him feel much smarter than you, too. Well, some facts are more revealing than others and you'd be better off not knowing some anyway. But, either way, I hope you can find more surprising secrets as long as you keep watching this phenomenal series on Cartoon Network.

I was very excited when I first heard this book was being made. I've been a huge AT fan since the show began and was hoping the book would be more like an actual encyclopedia of the Land of Ooo. I didn't get what I wanted but it's still pretty math!I think I would have much preferred the book be written by a scholar/historian living in Ooo. At times Abadeer's personal point of view gets boring and repetitive. This is especially evident in the A-Z mini-bio section where some characters are described simply by how useless Abadeer thinks they are and not giving any useful info about them. Also, his choice of vocabulary will have many kids frequently running to their parents to find out what his words mean. That can also be a plus for teaching new words, though. The sections I enjoyed most were the ones not written by Abadeer or sections where he isn't talking about the characters. BMO's manual is weird, but just the right amount. Ice King's hand drawn fan fiction and character cards are spot on. Abadeer's Novelty Spells and Curses is reminiscent of the ads you'd find in old comic books. Also, having Finn, Jake and Marceline's comments in the margins is pretty funny. The truth is, if you're an AT fan you've probably already bought this book. While I would have liked a more comprehensive guide book to Ooo with more detail, I think this book would be especially great for kids (as long as you don't mind helping them with the ten cent words) and fans that came to the show later who might not know as much about the setting.

How often do fans get to read draft versions of a favorite saga, glimpsing which elements were present from the beginning, how the story evolved, and various alternatives that were considered? For fans who relish such details, this is a book for you!Tolkien did not know at the outset what his story would be, but just began writing. Although he made numerous revisions to people and events, he stayed within the same framework rather than create something entirely new. Hence, the protagonists remained hobbits, the story opened with the birthday party, the hobbits leave the Shire, they arrive in Bree and meet a helpful stranger, they are pursued, and arrive in Rivendell. Tolkien foresaw the journey to Orodruin, that Gollum would play a role, and that the Shire would suffer, but did not yet Lothlorien, Saruman, Rohan or Gondor. Treebeard was originally envisaged as an enemy and the character who would become Strider/Aragorn as a hobbit ranger named Trotter. The bulk of Return of the Shadow follows the rewrites of various events from the Birthday party to the arrival in Rivendell. Some of the differences are minor, others more significant. The final two chapters focus on the failed attempt to cross the mountains and the entry into Moria. At this point, the party consisted of Gandalf, the shire hobbits, Trotter, and Boromir, although we see that Tolkien considered adding a dwarf and elf.Throughout the book, Christopher Tolkien adds his comments about the drafts and the story. It’s amazing enough that Tolkien saved his original material, even those scribbled on scraps of paper, but Christopher’s painstaking work organizing the versions, trying to figure out the order of writing, and deciphering script that was barely legible (in some cases, pencil with a different version overwritten in ink) is truly herculean. He notes discrepancies in maps and chronology, clarifies statements and passages, even admits when he doesn’t know what his father was thinking. What he does not do is describe any philosophical outlook or response to life events that influenced his tale or Middle Earth. You will need to look elsewhere for such an analysis.Parts of the book can be tedious if you’re not particularly interested in maps, coordinating dates, or reading three versions of a scene in a row. But if you are keen to observe the process of creation that resulted in Lord of the Rings, you will find this book fascinating.

The Return of Shadow explores the earliest drafts of Tolkien's masterpiece The Lord of the Rings. In doing so, you get repeated viewings of Tolkien's different drafts for the first chapters of the story. It feels like every time you get going, you wind up right back in Hobbiton again. I'd totally recommend this for anyone who wants to learn about the creation of the story or anyone who wants to study specific drafts of the Fellowship of the Ring, but if you read it front to back, be prepared for a bit of frustration as you keep getting thrown back to the beginning every time you get going.

The best and most accurate description of this series is a history of WRITING of the Lord of the Rings. It contains Tolkien's numerous revisions of the book before the final, settled account came out. For example, Frodo Baggins in a couple of early drafts presented in this book was named Bingo... Die-hard LOTR fans are saying, yeah, so what? The book is good for seeing the development of the story, but I hoped to find stories on more the background of Middle Earth itself, even more than in the Silmarrillon and other later additions to the history of Middle Earth. The fall of Numenor would make tremendous reading, wouldn't it? That tale is not in these books though. It is no fault Christopher Tolkien or his father that the tales don't appear. It does give you the feeling that LOTR was one vein in a tremendous gold mine of writing and that the mother-lode is still untapped.

Tolkien should be knighted by the british govt! this he deserves,a ld war one officer, a great father and a great writer a great mind who conceved rd of the rings and the hobbit,,its a sad day when he isn't recognized and people like jagger are, what an insult to humanity!

I like reading these books but I don't think very many others will. And I'm starting to get burned out on them. Previously I got the paperback edition of the first 5 books of this series. In the very first book there is a new story and it's a pretty good one. Some of the old stories are introduced to a traveler in the olden days. It's actually very interesting. But then it gets tedious. What is happening here is that JRR Tolkiens son Christopher went through all his Dads old papers to put these books together to show how JRR went about the process of writing Lord of the Rings. This volume and the next deal with Fellowship of the Ring. The story line you read sticks to the Fellowship line but it's different. This book shows the steps of character development. Ideas coming and going. Editing and rewrites. In short, to some folks this would be intensely boring. But I liked this book and I'm about half way through the next one, The Treason of Isengard. It's the same thing, the Fellowship story. Parts of what you read go from ideas that appeared in the Silmarillion to the end of tale of the Rings. Christopher Tolkien must have loved his father very much because he's put together an analytical series of books that leaves no comment untold, no idea unrevealed.
