Where will we get individuals to take up the cudgels for the “forgotten man?” Read this and learn.

Excellent book. Great from both the theoretical and practical perspectives.A lot of interesting history of the law as well, with some fascinating insight into the English history and customs that I must have missed during law school. The author had an obvious love for his craft that shines through in his writing.Overall, one of the better motivational books for trial lawyers that I have read.

This is a great book for a new lawyer or an older lawyer. It really gets you up for the practice of law

it was fine

Some of the best books are old books and this old book is one of the best. Lloyd Paul Stryker, who wrote "The Art of Advocacy" must have been a legal tiger. Brendan Gill in "Here at the New Yorker" described him as a fee-fie-fo-fum lawyer. Alexander Wolcott, in a 1939 profile of Stryker in "The New Yorker," called him a dragon slayer. In the same article Wolcott told a story of a woman seeking a lawyer to pursue a claim against a giant bank for a breach of their fiduciary responsibility. Was there any lawyer in New York City who'd take the case against the bank, she asked her adviser? "Yes, there's one," he said, "Lloyd Paul Stryker, a sole practitioner. If you can get him interested, he'll take your case. You see he likes fights, relishes combat and dislikes bankers instinctively." Here are some selections of advice from the book. "Good will is infectious; you can neither have nor display too much of it.... One of the greatest attributes an advocate can have is charm.... An advocate's most potent weapons are the kind of words he uses, the way he uses them, and his character.... Character is the best means of persuasion that an advocate possess."

From Booklist

When Torin Sinclair’s mother lands a job as a doctor in Snow Park, Colorado, Torin looks forward to learning how to snowboard. The sudden death of a young snowboarder, however, causes public hostility toward his mother. Then Torin learns of an old curse placed on all of the town’s physicians. Building on the classic formula of the newcomer who encounters the strangely hostile residents of a small western town, Ramthun spins an adventurous mystery that features elements of the supernatural, chases on snowboards, abandoned mine tunnels, a dramatic avalanche, and a blood-doping scandal. Along the way, Torin and his friends help unmask a criminal and save a colony of river otters. Some readers may be disappointed with the ending, in which the kids’ sleuthing is downplayed. Still, snowboarders will like the action scenes, and mystery fans will enjoy puzzling over the entwined plot elements. Grades 4-7. --Todd Morning

Exactly as described an fast delivery.

A friend (who is a mom of two children) recommended this book for both me and my 9 yr old son to read. Once I started to read it, I couldn't put it down. The mystery and colorfully quirky main characters captivated me. The author paints a vivid world for her reader - I didn't know much about snowboarding or what White Gates were and Ms. Ramthum managed to transform me into a snowboarder-wanna-be! My son is looking forward to reading it next and I am looking forward to our discussions about the mystery and choices the characters make.

Hi Bonnie: I read the book and loved it. Great plot turns that were unexpected and a real page turner. I hope boys this age will love it too and want to read more books like this. Martha Lancaster

When Tor has to move to the new town of Snow Park right before the holidays, things seem dire. Lucky for Tor, he soon makes some real friends and gets caught up in the thrill of snowboarding. Thing s seem to be going great until someone dies.... The adventure just takes off from there. It's a fast read all the way to the final touching scene! The author's personal comments at the end add a special touch, as well.Highly recommended!

There are so many reasons to love this book. It's an adventure involving snowboards, an avalanche, a curse, and a hidden valley. It's got memorable characters who spout dialogue that made me laugh. And the story will appeal to both boys and girls. But I think what I like best about it is the way it puts adventure together with soul. Tor, the main character, has moved from one world to another--San Diego to the mountain town of Snow Park, Colorado. There, he forms friends that end up making the difference between life and death. Tor must not only be resourceful and strong as he learns to snowboard, he must also reach within and be open to what his soul is telling him in order to save his life, solve a mystery, and change the history of the region. Highly recommended for readers 9 - 12 especially, and also for adults like me who enjoy well-written books for any age. (P.S.: I don't think the cover does justice to this title.)

An excellent adventure/mystery for young readers. With snowboarding as the main sport, and both boys and girls in the cast of characters, it should please most readers (including adults, for that matter). I sent it off to one of my great-nephews and will be interested to hear if he likes the book as much as I did.

I loved this book! The characters were believable and the plot exciting and compelling. I enjoyed waiting for it to play out. It it a well crafted book with an airtight plot and great pacing. Ms Ranthum has a great eye for details especially when it comes to her characters. She breathes life into them with her wonderful descriptions of how they look, move, gesture and interact with others and their dialogue is individualized, and full of character. Her supporting cast of grown-ups are equally well written. The references to classic literature made the book loads of fun from an adult perspective. Best of all, my kids loved this book, and are eagerly awating more books with Torin, Rain and Drake. I have high hopes that these three characters will be elevated in our house to the ranks of Harry Ron and Hermione, and Percy, Annabeth and Grover.

I read out loud to my kids a lot, but as they got older it got harder to find a book that my young teenage sons would enjoy. This book was perfect! Great action and message to my kids. They were enthralled!
