This book has a good selection of contemporary songs and seems to do its best to recreate the versions sung by popular Christian artists. This creates several problems if used for congregational singing:1. Many of the songs are pitched very high (up to a high G), which is not in my comfortable vocal range, let alone that of most people in the congregation. A few songs are quite low, in alto range.2. The arrangements are all many pages long, and the book isn't spiral-bound. Difficult for pianists. The downloadable sheets with lyrics and chords will help your singers and guitarists.3. Instead of standardizing the verses and chorus for ease of singing, the melody of every verse may be slightly different, with lots of confusing repeats and variations. (A more helpful format is used in the "All the Best Songs of Praise and Worship" series by Lillenas.On the plus side, most of the songs are written in good keys for guitar, and the guitar chords aren't too difficult.This book is fine for solo or group performance (if you've got a good soprano!), but unfortunately it won't be very useful for my worship team.

This book has a great song list, but seriously, why do they need to be written with 4 and 5 sharps? They could be arranged in a more common key easily. Most people have an easier time with signatures with flats than sharps and 4 and 5 sharps is so difficult to sight read. Also, one of the pieces was arranged so low it was difficult to sing with - unless you are a male barritone.

I love the songs in this collection. I only rated this music book 3 stars because the piano part is an accompaniment, and rarely contains the melody. I would prefer to play the melody, as I don't sing, and sometimes don't know the melody.

Really love the song collection in this book! Lots of new songs and the arrangements are interesting but too hard. Instantly fell in love with lots of songs! Sometimes it gets a little high for me but most songs written by males get too high in certain parts so I’m used to it. Really excited to keep learning songs from this book.

I have not been able to use this music book yet, but am definitely looking forward to it!

From Jane Goodall's Introduction: 'In 1859 Darwin shocked much of the world with his theory of evolution. Most people now accept the idea that we have evolved not from the modern great apes - chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas and orangutans - but a common ancestor: a chimp-like human-like creature who lived some six to seven million years ago. Recent research has revealed startling similarities in the structure of DNA in apes and humans. We differ from chimpanzees by only about one per cent. Chimpanzees and bonobos are closer to humans than they are to gorillas. All three African great apes show more similarities to us than to orangutans. 'In most of the places where they range, the great apes face extinction within the next ten to fifteen years if we do not act to save them. There were probably close to two million chimpanzees across Africa 100 years ago. Today there are no more than 150,000. They are declining in numbers as a result of ever-growing human populations, constantly encroaching the remaining forests, fragmenting remaining habitats, setting snares and hunting. The situation is even worse for mountain gorillas and orangutans. As wild ape numbers decrease, so the population of orphans in sanctuaries is increasing. Chimpanzees, gorillas and bonobos are being hunted, along with elephants, antelopes and myriad other species, for food - and not to feed starving people, but to satisfy a taste for 'bushmeat' among the urban elite. There is not much meat on an infant ape, so often it will be sold alive, illegally, in the market beside the cut-up body of its mother. 'James Mollison's portraits are of the orphans, confiscated from illegal traders, that make up thepopulation of at least nine seven sanctuaries in Africa and Asia. Many of them have seen their mothers killed, and sometimes butchered, in front of them. Each individual ape has his or her own tragic story of pain and trauma. Each one is different. It is very interesting book.

I’m the author of the book and I’m just responding to the reviews which say the book is damaged- the unattached binding is supposed to be like that. The reasoning behind is that it lets you fully open the book, without losing part of the image to gutter (the fold in the center of the book).When designing the book we thought about having images on a single page rather than a double page, but to have large images the book would have to have been huge. The unattached spine offered a solution. It’s important the images are a reasonable size as there are lots of things going on in the photographs. I worked with Patrick Waterhouse, who took one child from each image and illustrated them, the illustrations are shown above the page number giving viewers a kind of Where’s Waldo in trying to find them.I’ve given the book 5 stars- but of course I’m biased!James

I bought all the 1st and 2nd grade books for my son, he had a very, very bad year in kindergarten and now getting him motivated to do any kind of learning is very difficult. However, these books are easy for him to read and understand, he only needs a little guidance sometimes. He loves that they are Star Wars characters, and I love that he asks me if he can do his workbooks. I also took his book one step further and ripped the pages out and put them into page protectors and a 3 ring binder so that he can do the pages over and over, and I can use them for my other kids when they are ready to.

This is a great book to supplement what your child is learning in school during breaks or over the summer. However, like the math one we have, the material aligns with what is actually covered in kindergarten so if you are homeschooling first grade or your child is currently in first grade, the material would likely be a little too easy. However, it is great for reviewing and practicing what was covered in kindergarten which is what I purchased it for.

This book has 90 pages of actual worksheets, and covers practice writing both upper- and lower-case letters, copying simple sentences, intro to writing original sentences, parts of speech, sight words, number words, vowel blends, and vocabulary. Emphasis is always on penmanship. It typically only gives a page of practice, so it's not a text to be used for teaching. But for review or practice, it's engaging. Perfect as a summer bridge workbook to keep skills sharp.

This set of books (reading, writing, and math) have been great for my son but he was only starting Kindergarten when we started it and it was just the right level. So, I would think it would be too easy for the average 1st grader. My son loves Star Wars and these books have been very motivating for him. They are fairly similar to the types of worksheets that he is doing at school. Great extra practice for breaks and weekends!

These are perfect! My 1st grader was having troubles in writing and these books helped break things down for him and in a fun and exciting way! He loved them! I was going to hire a tutor but no need after using these workbooks. After we completed the workbook, I used a protective sheet to continue using the book!

I love these books! (We also got the Writing and Math workbooks.) We're homeschooling, and our first grader doesn't always have diligence with getting his school work done. It's been a couple of weeks since we bought these books and he wants to jump into them even before breakfast!The content is good and grade-appropriate, and it even encourages some stretch work that I wouldn't expect from a first-grader, but the son is eager to try them. Full color pages with simple reading. My son is 1st going into 2nd but is a bit behind in reading. We got this so that he can practice and not have the summer slide. I like that there is a little bit of writing practice, too. Most pages so far ask offer a particular type of word like short a or long e. So, the child gets practice on one type of word. This is good for my learning reader. The Star Wars theme keeps it more engaging for him. He doesn't complain (as much) because it's a fun topic.

While I like the way this workbook is structured, I feel much of it is a little advanced for first grade(the punctuation of character names and places). Other than that I like it, but it will be sitting on a shelf for a while until my young reader has more practice.

After buying and reading the book - I feel that this age range (stated on amazon.com as 8 and up) is off and that the book is better suited to older readers - I would say at least 10 and up, maybe 12. This is because book covers various sensitive subjects including: suicide, sexual predators online and at the mall, and being pressured to go to boy/girl parties and play games like spin the bottle and truth or dare.It's important to note that these sensitive topics are covered in (what I consider to be) a careless way. For example, the suicide issue comes up early in the book under "nosy questions." For me, this was really a problem - my young reader wasn't familiar with the term and had questions about it that I'd rather have waited to deal with. It was so very stupid to include this question because, seriously, under "nosy questions" there were a hundred other topics they could have used there and to bring up suicide in a book rated for 8 and up was way off the mark.Beyond this, I felt that there were a number of other, similar, issues - as listed above. I felt that these topics were not essential to the topic of good manners and did not need to be included here. They would have been better in a book for older kids and also in a book on different topics - maybe they need to write a smart guide to starting to date or a smart guide to staying safe online and at the mall; overall, I just didn't feel they were necessary to learn about good manners or that they were age appropriate for 8 year olds.

Very good book. With all AG books we read the them before we have our daughter read them. This had very good content, was super helpful and very practical. Our daughter loved the quizzes. I agree with some other reviewers that some sections were inapplicable for an 8 year old, namely a section on what to do if you're at a party and everyone decides to play "spin the bottle."

My granddaughter reports that these newer American Girl books are better :). Better pictures, she says. My daughter says she has been reading this one faithfully. Good manners are never out of place and this grandmother is glad for any opportunity to reinforce them. Parents have so many admonishments as well as lessons that sometimes getting the information from a source of this type makes a bigger impression than you'd think. The child takes it in at her own pace when she's in the mood to learn. Highly recommended.

My daughter is ten going on eleven and this is a nice way to give her some reminders with out working to hard or being overbearing. She really seemed to enjoy reading it and sharing points from this book with me and the family. She's a fairly mature tween so I didn't know if she would think this book was silly but she seems to really like it. Actually so far everything she has gotten from this series she has loved.

I love the smart girl's guide books, but I would recommend "Smart Girls Guide to Knowing What to Say" over this one. This one was a tad too wordy on the pages and I know my daughter lost some of the info that way.

Very impressed with the book. We have learned a lot. Daughter has learned how to set the table and what is polite and what is rude. This is so important given that kids are not taught manners these days. I really recommend it. My 7 year old loves it and refers to it often.

This little book is great for knowing what's appropriate to say in different circumstances. It helps avoid misunderstandings due to well-meaning, but not appropriate responses (an example being "At least they're in a better place" when someone passes away. This may not be the best thing to say to someone who is grieving). There's many other examples in this book.

We enjoy the American girl series. We have several different ones, this one in particular.My daughter to keeps them in her room...she enjoys them and often times they open up conversation without my having to pepper her.
