The story is filled with African cultural information that engages members of my Reading Club in productive discussions. Having little knowledge of Africa, they are learning through this medium cultural information that they can relate to some common practices they have experienced in their everyday lives. The humor of the book keeps readers looking for the next minutes. The book is morally strong and provides good examples of integrity, character, selflessness, and a range of other modes of behavior that children of this generation rarely consider. I will be looking for the next book in a few weeks.

Mma Ramotswe, "the accomplished founder of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" has agreed to marry "Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, proprietor of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors", but first there is business to be conducted and mysteries to be solved. Specifically, where is the couple going to live? In Mr J.L.B. Matekoni's house or in Mma Ramotswe's clean cottage? Mma Ramotswe is going to take care of Mr J.L.B Matekoni. Just listen to her tell his maid "A man who is well looked-after becomes fatter. They are just like cattle That is well-known." And what about an engagement ring with a large diamond? First, though, there are the cases Mma Ramotswe has to solve - an American student, missing for ten years from an experimental collective. The mother accepts that he might be dead, but wants to know why. Then there is the butcher with a wife who has suddenly enough money to send the son to an expensive private school. The orphanage just outside the city needs help with the troublesome pump and before he knows it, Mr J.L.B. Matekoni is charged with the care of two orphans without consulting Mma Ramotswe first, Oh, and the promotion of her assistant and .... there is so much information packed into these books. I love McCall Smith's language, descriptions of the country and it's people! The relentless heat comes off the page when reading the description of cars parked so that the least bit of shade wards off the sun, or the Commissioner's Land Rover entrusted to Mr J.L.B. Matekoni, or the university lecturer. Wonderful series!

Alexander McCall Smith never disappoints and "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" is gift that just keeps on giving. I love what I am learning about Africa and the African people. AMS, obviously, loves Africa and its people, especially Botswana. I'd love to sit with Mma Precious Ramotswe and share some Bush tea, some good conversation. She is wise and compassionate. I have a long way to go in the series but that is okay. This means that I can enjoy some good company for quite a while. I would like to invite Alexander McCall Smith to have Bush tea with us too and some fruit cake. The conversation would be so entertaining.I just saw a talk by Alexander McCall Smith at the Washington Library. It took place when Bush was in office. He spoke about "No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" at length and he took questions. I could listen to this man speak forever. I love his speaking voice and I love his laugh. He has a great laugh. I like a good laugh and he has a really good laugh. He is so cute and he has a great sense of humor. I would love to see him in person. I have so many questions for him. I have to look at his schedule to see when he will be in NYC. I'd like to see him. I don't know where this man gets the time to write all of these books, travel and teach at the University too. I am amazed by his energy.

I DO love 'The Number 1 Ladies' Detective Agency Series' by Alexander McCall Smith. While the author is 'white' (and so am I), his stories show a deep love for Africa and an appreciation for the dignity of ins indigenous people. Well...at least the people of Botswana. I recommend starting with this book since it is the first in the series. It is also as fine a beginning as any series could hope to be. We find the heroine reflecting on her life as a young girl in a British Colonial milieu and we see her in adult life as the intelligent and practical product of a prosperous father and a good high school education. We find her to be independent-natured, self-sufficient and willing and able to stand up for independent women anywhere. She starts her own business...and since she admires Agatha Christie, she decides to become a detective. Each of these books picks up and drops a single overall case, separating each phase of its solution with chapters dealing mostly with other cases that can be solved more quickly. Each case requires some ingenious thinking and a deep understanding of local culture and practices and, of course, of basic human nature. In spite of having to deal with darker events such as kidnapping, witchcraft, impersonation, philandering, insurance fraud and employee theft, there is something life-affirming about the heroine's approach to each case and in the way she stays 'centered' as a human being. Readers looking for a 'cozy' mystery series that is not set in England will very much enjoy this series!

I am a medical school classmate of Dick's and although we have kept up over the years, I must admit to surprise at aspects his/her life I never knew about, and especially what a good write she is. I highly recommend this book of readable unusual stories. There are easy reading chapters highlighting adventures of the young Dick Raskind and moving up to current times as Renee Richards. Interesting vignettes of tennis notables - Bobby Riggs, BillyJean King, Marina Navratilova among others - and Renee's further experiences over the years with tennis elite from her point of view. Finally some insight into her own struggles to make a difference in the world of professional tennis.

As a longtime email correspondent with the author, I was privy to this story and the others, enjoying them immensely. She is such a good short story writer I suggested she collect them into a book and publish them. I was sure they were worth a read as Dr. Richards has a way with words and is a gifted story teller. Not only that, but her stories were often about subjects not covered in her two autobiographies, Second Serve and No Way Renée, Many of her friends are famous athletes and she has met important and famous persons in her varied and active life. She knew Bobby Riggs and Billy Jean King and coached Martina Navratilova. Her lawyer who won the case for her playing on the professional circuit as a woman was the same who defended Ruby who famously shot and killed Oswald, the man who assassinated Jack Kennedy.Dr. Richard's life included friendships with the top people in various professions. The short stories include Spynight, the story of an amazing summer camp and vignettes from her Navy career as a man, as well as stories about some of her famous patients, one of whom, Keith Olbermann, had interesting things to say about her in his introduction. Tennis star Mary Carillo also had a penetrating anecdote at the beginning. Having read most of these stories before, I highly recommend the recent collection. I predict Spynight will become a great movie!

Dr. Richards is an excellent writer, who writes in a very entertaining and thoughtful way, with a style that is fluid and easy to read. The stories are exception, I high recommend it!

Lawrence H. Mark also went to same Summer Camp and experienced "Spy Night". He thoroughly enjoyed the memories.

This is a delightful, light but at the same time serious book. Delightful in that the main story, Spy Night, reconstructs an age of innocence at a Connecticut summer boy's camp, light because it is fast and enjoyable, and serious because of the undercurrent of WWII -- what it was like growing up Jewish American during WWII. The human impact is strong. Dr. Richards is a talented author. Her other stories about the medical profession are full of insight, compassion and humor. FIVE STARS.

I enjoyed Keith Olbermann's introduction and Mary Carillo's vignette. Spynight was fascinating, about a great and unique summer camp. Some of the campers grew up to be famous and accomplished. Dickie was excited to be away from home for the first time, instead of terrified. Camp was a perfect blend of Nature, Freedom and Responsibility. I recommend this collection highly, easy reading and a sure fire page turner!

Captivating stories that entertain as they reveal a character of tremendous integrity and strength of purpose. A good read all by itself. There is no need to know much about the author beforehand. Relevant information is in the book.

Face Forward, by Kevyn Aucoin

Amazon.com Review

"Makeup should be fun, not fascist," celebrity makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin avers in Face Forward, his third book. One of the most adored stylists among fashionistas, entertainment divas, and high-society jet setters, Southern-born Aucoin arrived on the New York fashion scene in the early '80s, a period he ridicules for its '50s-era conservatism and McCarthyist us-against-them values. His career since has been motivated by the feel-good ideals of acceptance, diversity, and self-love, and the vain world of beauty has eagerly participated in his vision. While one may puzzle on how it is he finds fulfillment in an industry known for its superficiality and elitism, Aucoin's words are nonetheless infectious and the touches of his brushes inspired. Conceived as an exploration of the past, present, and future of beauty, Face Forward is an ingenious showcase of the transformative, creative possibilities of makeup, with portraits of everyone from Julia Roberts to Sharon Stone, Martha Stewart to his mother, Thelma. His crafted visages range from minimal-application makeovers of friends to elaborate re-creations of such Hollywood icons as Audrey Hepburn (Calista Flockhart), James Dean (Gwyneth Paltrow), and Veronica Lake (shockingly, Martha Stewart) and such pop-culture personalities as Cher (socialite Alexandra von Furstenberg) and Siouxsie Sioux (Winona Ryder). The final pages present his ideas for looks to come, such as "Explorer," Mary J. Blige covered in eggplant body makeup with a rainbow of metallic eye shadows over her eyes and thickly glossed red lips; "Floralia," a freckled Lucy Liu resembling a sprite from A Midsummer's Night Dream; and "Venusian de Milo," Sharon Stone as an orange-haired, one-breast-baring sci-fi femme fatale. Throughout, Aucoin augments an already colorful book with step-by-step instruction, chatty commentary on each look and model, and riffs on such topics as friendship, politics (he repeatedly applauds the Clinton Administration for embracing diversity in the '90s), and the environment. "Appreciating (even highlighting) individuality is one of the great things about makeup," asserts Aucoin, and Face Forward is a dazzling testament to that belief. For those who see the fun of makeup and are eager to experiment with the virtually unlimited possibilities of it, this book is a boon. --Rebecca Wright

As a beginner researching for the best Make-up books, the name I kept hearing pop up was Kevin Aucoin, mind you I didn't know who he was but almost all the reviews I have read & listened to online, his makeup books were positively praised as one of the best. So I bought his book and after checking out Face Forward, they were correct. This book is beautiful and has superb pictures of Kevin transforming current celebrities to old Hollywood celebrities like Marilyn Monroe & James Dean or Historical figures like Cleopatra. This book goes beyond the typical make-up books we are used to & his book really showcases why Kevin Aucoin's make-up skills and books are still looked up to even after his death. I will say though that this book is more in the realm of a Professional make-up artist then for beginners. So for that reason I wouldn't recommend this book as the first book a beginner will get in understanding the basics of make-up but I would recommend this book for beginners & make-up artist to add to their permanent make-up book collection, its a book that you won't regret having. Its even good as a coffee table book as well, so get it while supplies are available. Face Forward will be part of my permanent make-up collection & it's definately worth the money.

I am replacing a copy of this book that a friend didn't return. This is one of my favorite make-up technique books, written by Kevyn Aucoin, who left us much too soon. His legacy of excellent books pass on the idea of makeup as a tool for self-expression and enjoyment open to all people.

As a picture book I give it 5 stars. As a" how to "not so detailed. Of course most "Pros" that made it in the industry do much of the same. Afraid of giving away secrets which is a shame, because if they were truly confident in their abilities and themselves no matter how competitive the industry maybe they will always be enough to go around. Not everyone wants to be a makeup artist, maybe they just want to look a little more polished.I have several of Kevyon Aucion's Books are much the same coffee table picture books. Its a shame Kevyon died at such a young age. He really had talent.

I read this book when I was a little girl and fell in love with cosmetics. Kevyn Aucoin is the reason I know how to put on makeup today. I was feeling nostalgic and had to pick up a copy because it was such a great way book.

If you like pictures of celebrities in full makeup or made up to look like other celebrities. This is for you. It also has makeovers of regular people so the looks can be accomplished in anyone. Basic instructions, great if you have minimal experience with makeup.

When Kevin Aucoin died earlier this year it was a loss of not only a great talent but a good human being. This book is delightful and is very instructive on how to make your face transform withe either small effort or more in depth work.I have no problem using the photos and instructions given in this to achieve what I desire. This book and "Making Faces" have changed my whole outlook on make-up and how I use it to my great joy!You should read the entire front section and it may help to have "Making Faces" as well to understand all that he shows you in this book. But it is mostly intuative once you get going!Hurrah for Kevin and my deepest sorrow that he was taken from this earth much too soon.

I really enjoy Kevin Aucoin's books because I love his approach to beauty in general. I took off one star because I feel like the makeup application could have been a bit more detailed. But still a good buy nonetheless.

I didn't really like this book. I expected so much more than what I seen. Especially since it was on the top list for makeup artist.

I spent a fair bit of time reading, pondering, and taking notes on this book. It is well-written, insightful, and it made me think harder about some important matters. My three star ranking is due to one fundamental issue that kept nagging me throughout the book, namely the claim that worship precedes thinking/doctrine/beliefs. There is no doubt we love things many times before we can properly explain them, but I do not find the clean progression of moving from worship to thinking about our beliefs the right alternative. It seems there is a more dynamic interplay rather than the clean progression Smith argues for.Today (April 5, 2016) I landed upon a generally appreciative review of Smith's latest book, You are What You Love. It is by New Testament scholar, Patrick Schreiner. You are What You Love is a more accessible version of Desiring the Kingdom. Schreiner has much positive to say about Smith's work (I agree with these sentiments, especially with respect to Smith's terrific book, How (not) to be Secular). However, Schreiner voices a mild concern which is similar to the one I stated above:"I still personally wonder if the picture he [Smith] paints is actually too neat. Maybe the process of theological anthropology is too complex to break down into humans primarily being this or that. Because isn’t the intellect a part of the body’s and heart’s process of desiring?"

James Smith does an immaculate job describing what Christian universities strive to do and how that has failed to be a proper counterforce for the "liturgies of the world." The whole philosophy in the book challenges how we view normal everyday practices that shape what our idea of the life are about. He challenges us to consider what it looks like to cultivate practices and rituals that shape our desires. The perspective reader should know that this is a moderately dense book for the subject matter. He's recently come out with what I believe is meant to be and easier read that covers the same topic. Overall, I'm excited to go back over this book again in the future and continue to ponder the ideas he's left me with. The book will challenge the reader to think about the central purpose of being a Christian and what Christian Ccommunity ought to look like.

It is a ubiquitous question for thinking and engaged Christians everywhere in every age: How do we understand the tension between the influence of the culture upon the church and the influence of the church upon the culture? In much of the recent evangelical literature on this subject, the focus has been on worldview. The big ideas have been ideas, beliefs, and doctrines and how Christians ought to transform theirs or recapture a distinctly Christian set. Smith sees the project in a different light. In fact, he sees the matter of influence to be upon our ideas and not necessarily through our ideas. In many ways, Smith reaches back through modern and enlightenment-influenced theology and philosophy to Augustine and his belief that we are primarily affective creatures before we are rational creatures: we love before we think. And if the central questions about our character and formation are about our loves, we ought to get to what forms and shapes our loves. Smith's fundamental claim and the one that drives the book is that "liturgies" form our loves, and thus, form us. Early on he notes, "The core claim of this book is that liturgies - whether `sacred' or `secular' - shape and constitute our identities by forming our most fundamental desires and our most basic attunement to the world. In short, liturgies make us certain kinds of people and what defines us in what we love." (pg. 25)Though the primary audience of the book is Christian education, Smith is aware, and I wholeheartedly agree, that his work has far-reaching application outside of the academy. If his premise is true, then this work has implications for the form and shape of the church as much as the university. I will briefly summarize the two sections of the book with some of his major points, and then offer some questions and analysis. The first of two sections is devoted to an expression of anthropology, focusing on humans as loving/affective creatures and how those loves are formed. Cultural liturgies are examined and exposited as Smith makes the case for loving as the fundamental act of the human being in place of reasoning. Most worldview thinking, he argues, has the human creature exactly upside down as it emphasizes rationalistic behavior over affective influences. For someone familiar with some of the basics of virtue theory, it will not come as a surprise that Smith argues that habits and practices play a large, if not primary, role in the forming of loves and the human character. He also employs the structure of "social imaginary" to describe how the practices of our lives and our worship form us as "noncognitive" directors of our actions and dispositions toward the world. In the second section, Smith moves from anthropology to the more constructive task of dealing with the actual ins and outs of Christian worship. In the first section he argues that we need to form a new way of imagining and seeing the Kingdom of God, and in the second part he goes about dealing with how that happens. He asks, "In other words, what does worship say about Christian faith?" (pg. 134) It is a good question, and it deserves to be dealt with. What do our actual practices as Christians tell us about the shape of our faith in Christ? The term "practical atheist" may be overused in some contexts, but its point fits just fine with Smith's larger idea. Are we as Christ followers worshiping (acting) in such a way as to make good sense of our faith? While some reviewers have noted that the first part of the book may be stronger than the second, I think a degree of charity needs to be applied to this second part. I must admit that I lost some steam reading through to the end as Smith listed the various "practical" applications of his theory, but I still found them instructive and at times provocative.I found a lot of Smith's argument to be the kind of thing we ought to be talking about in our churches and universities. Are we guilty of a kind of Gnosticism in which we have disconnected what we believe from how we behave and what we do when we gather together? Have we lost a sense of being deeply affective creatures who are often moved by our experiences more than the latest lecture we heard? We need to wrestle with the implications of these issues. Given that, there are some assertions and arguments in the book to push against.I'll get a rather small thing out of the way first. From time to time Smith seems to erect scarecrows to knock down. One particular instance happens in his sidebar on The Moulin Rouge. His argument is that there is something valuable in the way love is portrayed (at least in its force in the human being) there, and he notes, "And so one could suggest that the kingdom looks more like Montmarte than Colorado Springs!" (pg. 72) The play, of course, is on a stereotype of Colorado Springs as a kind of evangelical Mecca where nearly everyone is blindly evangelical and in lock-step with the Republican party. I was disappointed in that kind of broad-stroke ad hominem, but it isn't the only place where part of his argument relies on pigeon-holing a set of evangelicals in a cubicle and knocking the whole thing down. Then there are times where it seems Smith is too heavy-handed with other points of view in order to make his argument. The result of this tact is that he portrays an apparent disregard for and a simple denial of different points of view. Smith clearly argues that we are primarily affective/loving beings, but at times he appears to say we are exclusively affective/loving beings, showing a disregard for what seems to me to be the truth of the influence of ideas and reason. Instead of a both/and or primary/secondary approach Smith seems to want to have an either/or approach, which doesn't help his overall case.Early on Smith characterizes his foil as "rationalistic," "a talking-head version of Christianity," and provocatively enough a "'bobble head' Christianity" where what goes on in the head far outweighs what goes on in the body (pg. 42). While this can be true of some forms of Christian theology heavily influenced by the enlightenment, is it true of all forms of theology concerned with true doctrine and the content of the propositional messages we proclaim? As seems to be the case with theologians and Christians influenced by a postmodern philosophy, there might be a temptation to make a category mistake here: all who disagree with us are disjointed enlightenment thinkers.Another example of this kind of reasoning appears in the second half of the book on page 163, "The `image of God' (imago Dei) is not some de facto property of Homo sapiens (whether will or reason or language or what have you); rather, the image of God is a task, a mission" (emphasis his). This is the kind of thing that shoots the argument he wants to make in the foot. We are put off by the unnecessary bifurcation of the two - property vs. mission - and we are on guard from then on. I find it obvious in both the Scripture and in the theology on the subject that the image of God is at least a set of properties endowed to us by God that make us, not worms, uniquely human. It is then be constructive to note that the image of God is a "task, a mission" that we have as creatures living under God.I simply do not see a logical contradiction in his argument if he took love to be primary to reason, and then argued for the proper places of each in the liturgies of the believer. There is a lot to be gained through Smith's book, and he raises arguments we need to wrestle with that we don't often think through. And for that, I think this book is very useful for Christian educators and pastors. But I hope that as he fills out this project he will avoid some of the unnecessary rhetorical and argumentative devices that hurt the overall argument.

What comes to your mind when you think of Spain? Does it remind you of a place where you can spend your holidays? I have never been to Spain. Judging by the postcards, movies and the excitement on the faces of my friends, I expected Spain to be an ideal place to spend your holidays. But little did I know Spain has more layers to it besides being a place for fun and frolic. It is also a place which is struggling to come to terms with it's ghosts.Less than 40 years after the death of the Generalissimo, Francisco Franco, the people are still divided on what Spain went through during his reign. A lot of modernization happened under Franco. On the other hand, there was also a lot of brutality. Ironically, it was also a time when brother turned against brother or neighbour against neighbour. Even after all these years, Spain is still deeply divided on this subject and is reluctant in exorcising the demons. Modern Spain is trying to forget the past. At the same time, it is also trying to capitalize on the tourism. The tourism which has boosted construction has also ushered in corruption. At the same time, there are lone wolves who stand up against the tide. If this is not enough, nationalism is creating a division in the map of Spain. The Basques refuses to be Spanish. Similarly, Barcelona is not Spanish if you take the language and culture into consideration.Having spent a considerable time in Spain, Giles Tremlett shows us a side of Spain which we have not seen. In order to paint this picture of Spain, he not only draws from the experience of living in the country for so many years but also the networks he has created in the country. He goes to different parts of the country, conducts interviews and uses this as the basis for telling us about the struggles of Spain. This technique serves in telling the facts like in an investigation in a very interesting way. This is the book to read if you are armchair traveller or if you plan to visit the country. Visiting places can help you take photographs. Knowing the people will help you tell a much more interesting story using the photographs. It will also help you understand and appreciate the locals you meet.

My wife and I are concluding a three month tour of Spain by car. We came to learn about the country and enjoy its cultures and the natural beauty of the land. The book provided insight and understanding we would have missed without it. For foreigners like us who want to get more out of their travels in Spain we recommend reading Ghosts of Spain

I have learned a lot about the Spain, politically, culturally and emotionally. The Spanish are an interesting and very diverse people; some of whom do not want to be one nation but a federation of states. My only criticism, if it is that, is I wish there was more on the Spanish Civil War, which is why I picked up the book. Yet I am glad a read the book because of the other facets of the nation that I know understand a little better. I really makes me want to go back and visit specific regions of the country.

For those who are interested in the pre WW II wars between Fascism and Socialism/Communism. this book, though somewhat repetitive with other books on this subject, is a very good read. Do take the time for this book!

a real insight into the Franco days and the aftermath of "forgetfulness2 and "reinvention" of a nation. Well written and harrowing in parts as the history is still recent. He's still very much revered in the older circles and still whispered about behind closed doors by those who still fear and mistrust the system. Brought to life by an excellent researcher who clearly loves his adopted country.

This is a beautiful book than helps outsiders to understand country. What is amazing is that this is not only about Madrid or Barcelona but about Spain and its history. Writer managed to provide his view without being judgmental, leaving conclusions to reader.

It is one of the well written travel books that have a good balance of facts, education and personal essays. It Covers history and current issues of Spain politics, culture and art, I think this will prepare me well for visiting Spain and motivate me to proceed with deeper understanding of this beautiful and intriguing country and people.

Nice follow up after reading the classic Iberia by James Michener. Brings the reader up to date on life in modern Spain which is still haunted by ghosts of its civil war and the battle between tradition and modernism. La Transicion, or Spain's transition to democracy is something that is occuring both historically, politically, and personally as Spain enters a more globalized, connected world. Tremlett describes this "transicion" from all perspectives, but it is his personal perspective, as an ex-pat Brit raising his family in Spain, which I found particularly enjoyable. His descriptions of day to day life juxtaposed into chapters dealing with deeper historical and political events, such as the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, the legacy of Franco, the Basque separatist movement, the pride of Catalans, and the 2004 Islamic bombings, makes this book very readable and pertitent to truly understanding not only the country but its people, and their remarkable history.
