I ordered my copy from America as it appears to be out of print in the U.K. I had been searching for a while and was not disappointed upon reading it. Many of the breeds are American which I enjoyed discovering more about, but also British breeds too. For new spinners there is plenty of tuition and information on preparing and spinning these rare wools.The picture gallery made me want to start creating right away. The only grievance (and this is partly due to my lack of ability) is there are no instructions/patterns for the beautiful garments knitted.A classic little book (94 pages).

This is a compendium of pictures and history of the makers for a juried show.No patterns, not much on the really rare animals I had hoped for.I'd really like to return it.Also had marking in it, like someone had tried to edit the book after printing.

This book highlights rare breeds of sheep and gives all kinds of fascinating information about them: where the breed is to be found, how it came about, the type of wool the sheep grow, and the status of the breed in terms of rarity.If that isn't interesting enough, there are pictures of projects done in various wools like Jacob, California Mutant Red, Pitt Island, Leicester Longwool and Cotswold. The projects range from knitted lace to woven rugs. If you are a handspinner, weaver or knitter who likes fine wools, this is a very interesting little book. I really enjoyed it.

Many knitted and woven garments and a woven carpet as well, all made out of wool. Accompanied by pictures of many of the endangered sheep breeds. Its mainly a picturebook, no instructions on how to do the projects. It begins with an explanation on rare breeds, then comes a short chapter on the history of spinning and some comments about the spinning of the yarn and the making of the finished piece. In the end you can find an introduction into spinning (combing, carding, handspindles, washing of yarn). 80 pictured pieces and many sheep.

I have been a student of the Holocaust since before I was a teenager. A major focus of my interest was the Nuremberg Trials in which the surviving Nazi big wigs were brought to justice in an extensive judicial review of the high crimes of Nazi Germany. The world was focussed on the trials and an Academy Award-winning feature film was made about them as well. When I read a review of "The Other Nurembeg: The Untold Story of the Tokyo War Crimes Trials", it may have been the first I knew that there actually was such an inquest. I never came across it at book stores so I sought it out on Amazon.com to find out just what the trials were all about.These trials were somewhat different from their German counterpart. One difference was the control that General MacArthur held over the creation and (to a small extent) control of the trials. There were also a lot more countries represented on the Bench. Instead of the Big Four in Europe, the Americans, English and Chinese were joined by jurists from Australia, the Soviet Union, The Netherlands, The Philipines, India, and France. The chief judge was an Australian and the chief prosecutor was an American. The accused, however, were all Japanese.There were a variety of issues involved such as the Rape of Nanking, the forced labor, the surprize attack on Pearl Harbor, the killing of POW's and shooting survivors of torpedoed ships, the mass murders in China, The Philipines and elsewhere. The issue of waging an agressive war was also an issue which was worked over and defined.The genesis of the tribunal and the prosecution of the trials are spelled out well in Arnold Brackman's researched recollection as a journalist covering the trials at the time. Some topics and crimes may seem to be covered in less detail that the reader may prefer. However, Brackman's description of the tens of thousands of pages of evidence and testimony gives us an overall aprreciation of the author's ability to summerize the major points of the trials. There are a lot of incidents referred to that may have escaped the attention of many readers. The initial outbreak of the invasion in China was an event known as the Mukden Incident which was news to me. At times the vollume of brutality left the author acknowledging that there was a lot more than he (or the tribunal) had time to cover.Brackman had a good sense of the personalities and rivalries involved in the judges and lawyers working in the trials. He also was rather defensive at times regarding that variety of opinions back home about the War and its' causes. He is also willing to speak frankly about some of the merits of the defense of the accused. For example, he points out that the Japanes army had "liberated" a number of European colonies in Asia. However, Brackman also points out that the Japanese were more brutal to their Asian captives than they were to the European ones.At times the book seems more oriented to a legal focus rather than an historic one but this is, afterall, about a trial rather than a battle. In the end, the trial, having lasted well past what was expected, came to an end with seven executions and a number of lengthy prison sentences of which most ended with parole in the mid-1950's.The Tokyo trials were not the focus of the world like their Nuremberg counterpart. However, they were an important reminder that, even in war there are standards of decency. The evidence that we do get reminds us of the reason for the trial. "The Other Nuremberg", like the trials themselves, is valuable for the closure that it brings to the end of a brutally waged war of agression.

Everyone knows the story of the Nuremberg Trials but today the story of the Tokyo Trials is largely forgotten outside of Japan. The Allies who prosecuted the Pacific War held trials of Japan's war leaders on the same legal basis as those of the Nazis following the end of WWII. This book, written by a reporter who was present during the proceedings, looks at international law and the violations of it while Japan attempted to take over Asia. Also, the Japanese government's involvment in narcotics trafficing and both large-scale and small-scale atrocities directed at the civilian populations and POWs was addressed during the trials.While imperfect, the trials not only established the criminal behavior of Japan's government but determined the punishment of key leaders involved. The war guilt of Emperor Hirohito was never addressed (or addressed only obliquely) for political reasons while seven men were hanged for war crimes.A good read with some photos.

The best told book of the least known and covered war crimes trials by a reporter (and the only one) actually allowed in Tokyo, and one who inerviewed all of the prisoners on trial. The inside story of how the Allies really dropped the ball in prosecutions in a trial that the Allies really didn't want to bother with, which should have out-raged every American at the time. Many of the prisoners got nothing more than a slap on the hand, and, had this trial been for their Nazi counterparts, more death sentences would have been handed down. One gets the feeling from the author's perspective that the Allies were just thankful the war was over and really had better things to do than to go through another Nuremburg Trials ordeal......very sad, especially for the families who lost loved ones at Pearl Harbor. This book is a MUST read!!!!

The writer is not interested in merely stating the facts or telling what happened but takes the reader through the trial from start to finish high lighting stories and issues that other writers (even those authors who were directly involved in the trial itself) didn't know or bother to find out. This book is worth the time and I highly recommend it.

I loved reading about a part of history that has never been mentioned in books or movies.

Used copy better than advertised. An astonishing read for someone who was in Japan and at the War Ministry at the same time as this book was written. Wow!

Since there are so many of these darn things the review shall be divided into three sections. First, a brief description of the Loeb series of books and their advantages/disadvantages. Second shall be my thoughts on the author himself, his accuracy, as well as his style and the style of his translator. This is of course only my opinion and should be treated as such. The final part shall review what this particular book actually covers.The Loeb series date back to the turn of the last century. They are designed for people with at least some knowledge of Greek or Latin. They are a sort of compromise between a straight English translation and an annotated copy of the original text. On the left page is printed the text in Greek or Latin depending on the language of the writer and on the right side is the text in English. For somebody who knows even a little Greek or Latin these texts are invaluable. You can try to read the text in the original language knowing that you can correct yourself by looking on the next page or you can read the text in translation and check the translation with the original for more detail. While some of the translations are excellent mostly they are merely serviceable since they are designed more as an aid to translation rather than a translation in themselves. Most of them follow the Greek or Latin very closely. These books are also very small, maybe just over a quarter the size of your average hardcover book. This means that you'll need to buy more than just one book to read a complete work. They are also somewhat pricey considering their size. The Loeb Collection is very large but most of the more famous works can be found in better (and cheaper) translations elsewhere. If you want to read a rarer book or read one in the original language then you can't do better than the Loeb Editions.There are 11 volumes of Plutarch's Lives as well as a further 16 of his Moralia in the Loeb series which includes all his known works. Plutarch is without doubt my favorite Classical author. His books are personal, entertaining, and he just comes across as a generally warm and friendly guy. That last part is very rare in Classical authors. His most famous works are his Lives. These were basically mini-biographies of famous men. The writing of Lives was very popular in Antiquity with Suetonius being perhaps the most famous example. What makes Plutarch's different however is the way that he captures the character and the ability of his subjects. Unlike other Lives which divide their subject into topics and then record these out of context, Plutarch's ones follow a chronological order. He also took more care over them than others did. Lives were considered less reputable than Histories but Plutarch treated his like mini-Histories. The interpretation might be different but he is rarely caught out in errors except where his sources make the same errors. Also unlike most Classical writers he doesn't go overboard on the moralizing. These works were written to educate and instruct but the basic lessons are simple enough and he only goes into ethical conclusions in his comparison after each paired life.This is one of the rare times where I really think that the Loeb translations are the best ones out there. While these works are available for cheaper elsewhere (Modern Library Volumes 1 and Volume 2) they are generally based off the Dryden translation. Avoid the Dryden translation. It is very old (1683) and a lot of these "new" translations are simply the Dryden translation with a few spelling and wording changes to make it sound more modern. While the Loeb translations may seem older (the 1910s) they are at least written in modern English translated directly from the Greek. The Penguin ones are better but for some reason they felt the need to split them up by era (On Sparta [Lycurgus, Agesilaus, Agis, Cleomenes, and some Spartan Sayings], The Rise and Fall of Athens [Theseus, Solon, Themistocles, Aristides, Cimon, Pericles, Nicias, Alcibiades, Lysander], The Age of Alexander [Agesilaus, Pelopidas, Dion, Timoleon, Demosthenes, Phocion, Alexander, Demetrius, Pyrrhus], The Makers of Rome [Coriolanus, Fabius Maximus, Marcellus, Cato the Elder, Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus, Sertorius, Brutus, Mark Antony], Rome in Crisis [Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus, Sertorius, Lucullus, Younger Cato, Brutus, Antony, Galba, and Otho], The Fall of the Roman Republic [Marius, Sulla, Crassus, Pompey, Caesar, Cicero]). These were dual Lives. They paired off famous Greeks with famous Romans and compared their careers, the idea being that they had similar virtues and vices. Splitting them up like that ruins the original intent of the author and removes the analysis after each pair. Even when the comparison seems forced it is at least evident why Plutarch included what he did.The first set is Pericles and Fabius Maximus. Pericles was the leader of Athens during their height. His leadership during crises held the city together. The Peloponnesian War was his main conflict. Though he died too soon to see whether his policy would work he held that Athens must avoid fighting Sparta on land and only confront them by sea. Fabius Maximus was able to keep up a policy where he avoided confrontation with Hannibal and merely harassed his baggage train never giving him time to relax. The next comparison was between Nicias and Crassus. Both were rich, competent generals who nevertheless lost catastrophic battles that claimed their lives and those of their army. Nicias was an Athenian noble who led the Athenian army in Sicily during the Peloponnesian War while Crassus led his army to be wiped out by the Parthians during the last decades of the Republic. He was Caesar and Pompey's chief competition.

This book provides a lot of great information, and is well organized. The first section addresses getting started, soil, pests and diseases. In this section, there are very useful tables of pests and diseases organized by plant, along with the suggested approach to controlling them (I never knew that cats were attracted to Kiwi). The next section is organized by plant, and for each one, addresses when/where/how to plant them, care and maintenance, harvesting, and other tidbits, including varieties particularly suited to California climates. This is one book that appreciates the diversity of climate in this state, and breaks down our 14 climate zones and their chill dates/times. The final section in the book is an adequate glossary, and nice list of other resources (seed and plant sources, etc.).

For being a regional gardening book I was hoping for more California specific details. This book is great general information for a beginning gardener.

It starts with chapters on the basics of veggie gardening, then has 2 pages of text and color photos for each common species that can grow in California. Very helpful hints on every page. The climate reference map for California is also super helpful.

Good book, I just thought since it was California specific, there would be more information. I was hoping for more detail, less opinion I guess but will still be very useful even if it wasn't thorough enough for what I need.

I just finished Claire Splan's very readable gardening book. Her book immediately digs into some of the real gardening basics--growing zones and tools. She speaks to garden pests, and the impact of controlling them; addresses how to build up the soil, and how to test it with expert analyses; and explains how to best plant seeds for a nice variety of vegetables, herbs, and trees. I highly recommend this clearly written and nicely illustrated book. It is a friendly introduction to whatever level of organic gardening the reader decides to jump in at.

I have 30 or more garden books...I find this one easy to read for beginner gardener. Covers more veggies, nuts, fruit than eastern written books.

Poor aid to the novice. Undefined terms, long listings of bugs and diseases without pictures. Some useful info if you use additional texts. Would not order it if I knew what I know now.
