...with strong hints of future books to come. The only thing about The Serpent's Shadow that one could possibly complain about is the fact that the plot is so similar to the other two books in the series (and indeed many other Riordan books). That plot is simplicity itself. Their adversary, the Egyptian chaos god Apophis, will destroy the world in a few short days. Apophis is too powerful to be defeated directly but fortunately he does have a weakness, an Achilles' Heel. To exploit this weakness the siblings Kane will have to journey to many places in the mortal realm and beyond. But Riordan hides the familiarity of the plot quite deftly. Threads and relationships that have been set up in previous books are advanced in entertaining and unpredictable ways. The wonderful reimagining of ancient Egyptian myths continues to unfold with undiminished speed and skill. Action sequences (a real Riordan specialty) come thick and fast and are well choreographed and seem somehow realistic, as contradictory as that sounds given the highly unrealistic premises. We also have a new minor villain, the ghost Setne, with a promise of greater things to come in the future. All in all, fast paced entertainment with likeable leads the reader can really root for both in their world saving tasks and their complex personal lives. Riordan has hinted strongly in this book that the Kane universe and the Percy Jackson universe are one and the same and that the Kanes and Jackson are due for a crossover in the future.Highly recommended for all ages. The book has been out for only a few weeks but is approaching 100 reviews. If you haven't read the previous Kane novel start with The Red Pyramid and work forward.

I love this entire series...Rick Riordan wrote a great trilogy bringing Ancient Egypt into modern times. As a parent, what I like the best about this series is that my kids learned Egyptian history and mythology without realizing it...sort of like slipping a vitamin into mashed potatoes. The kids ate it up and learned something at the same time. I took my kids to the Field Museum in Chicago shortly after my oldest read this series, and I was amazed at how much she knew...she saw statues and could immediately identify them and tell the basic story about them just because of this series.

It's a continuation of the Red Pyramid Series. It's good for ages 10-15, boys and girls. The easy, language is not too challenging except for the foreign names. It provides background for Egyptian mythology and doesn't confuse other civilization's mythology into the book. It continues Riordan's good but not overbearing humor. It's not a comedy book. The main female protagonist is strong, snarky and loyal. There is a brainy, hopeful male character who balances her. The plot is different from the first two books, nor was it a logical step from the rest of the series. The first half tried to pull together plot points that the previous books had left unfinished, without the strong narrative that the first two did so well. The second half of the book seemed less polished, in that some places they visited were too unexplained, but then others were delved into too deeply. The ending was overly dramatic and didn't need to be. Like some of his other books, he ends up losing sight of the main goal, because he brings in too many unresolved plot threads from the previous books. It would be good for a gift if the whole series accompanied it.

Apophis is rising and chaos is about to destroy the world. And only Carter and Sadie Kane can stop him. But the only ones left to stand with them are the young magicians of Brooklyn House as their allies are being attacked, the House of Life is divided and on the brink of the civil war, and the gods themselves stand apart. To put an end to Apophis they need to find a spell that has been lost for a millennia and the only one that can lead them to it is the ghost of a deadly magician. Can Carter and Sadie do the impossible one last time? Or will the world fall into chaos? In this third and final book in the Kane trilogy, Riordan once again weaves his magic to create an epic battle and a memorable story. Riordan weaves a tale that will keep the reader on the edge of the seat through the twists and turns that are created, wondering and hoping that all of our heroes survive to do battle one more time. There's plenty of humor, some romance, the return of old friends, and lots of fun twists in this tale. And possibly a hint or two of future adventures to come. It's an epic read and I highly recommend it.

This delightful and well-written memoir tells the story of a woman, English born and bred, never straying very far from her home village, who found herself suddenly uprooted and transported to the Sultanate of Oman. When Charlotte Smith agreed to follow her husband in the wake of a new job, she knew that she and her family would encounter a world radically different from the one they had always known, but she was not quite prepared for how different it would be. She did, however, know that it was a Muslim country, and that did concern her greatly, though not for reasons of religion or ideology. No, her concerns were much more practical--where was she going to buy wine, and, perhaps more importantly, as an animal lover, how was she possibly going to survive without pets? After all, the Quran requires all strict Muslims to abstain from alcohol and to revile dogs as unclean creatures.Fortunately, when she arrives in Oman she discovers the Sultanate to be much more progressive than its backwards neighbors. Sure, homosexuality is still illegal (3 years in the pokey if you are not discreet, but better than death) and don't go around dissing either the Prophet or the Sultan, but it possible to get a permit to buy booze and no one minds if you responsibly keep a pet. After Smith receives her liquor-purchase permit from the government, she discovers that liquor stores in Muscat (the capital) are very much like sex shops used to be--windows shuttered against prying eyes and doors tightly closed, but inside containing a wonderland of adult pleasure. As for dogs and cats (mogs or moggy), she ends up not only owning wonderful companions, but actually working in a Muscat veterinarian's office and running a pet adoption service for trays and abandoned animals.Once Smith moves beyond the confines of her own family and the problems of running a household in a foreign land and enters the world of dogs and mogs, we are presented with some of the most heart-warming, and heart-breaking, stories you'll ever read about our animal friends. At one point in the memoir, the veterinarian in charge declares angrily: "I love animals, it's people I can't stand!" It's something that I (along with Mark Twain and James Thurber) have known for a long time, but, through Smith's clear and impassioned writing, you, too, might find yourself drifting to that point of view.Smith's memoir begins in the early 21st Century and concludes in the middle of 2013, a period of great change and turmoil in the Middle East and North Africa. Since some of the political and economic events do affect the lives of her family, they are referenced now and then, but only tangentially. She rightly keeps her focus on the small picture, the lives of her friends and family, and, especially, the dogs and mogs she meets and is sometimes able to help. This book will appeal to those who enjoy biographies, memoirs or accounts of travel in foreign lands. But I think the real appeal will be for dog and cat fanciers, especially those who think that any effort made to make the lives of dogs and cats better is never a wasted effort.

The only time I ever gave a book two stars before was one that demonstrated unfair bias and hate. I'm usually more than generous with my reviews, but I simply cannot recommend this one.I was drawn to this book because I love animals and normally enjoy reading books about the Middle East, but usually such books are written by Middle Easterners, not arrogant, wealthy Brits who criticize everything about the culture of their host country. Despite the claim made in the book that British culture is simply different from Omani culture, not better or worse, most of the book demonstrates a contrary viewpoint.First, the author was desperate for wine from the moment she arrived. And then it was wine, wine and more wine. She lived in the country for seven years and supposedly spoke only three words of Arabic (though I'm sure that was an exaggeration, but still!). Indians were portrayed in the book as nameless, faceless workers whose culture and customs she neither liked nor understood, and Omanis were not portrayed much better. She seemed leery of women wearing abayas and laughed about wearing one herself to a party. When her maid took advantage of her, she had every right to be angry, but the one grievance that didn't sit well with me was that the maid left her animals unattended to go to a party. So the hired help isn't allowed to leave the animals for an evening? One evening??This was almost like a personal diary and just as boring. Most of the stories would be fitting for rich people at a cocktail party, but they were far from real adventures or real suffering. It was like that popular hashtag of the day, "First World Problems." I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't this. The most interesting parts of the book are little snippets of politics and culture: one short bit about the Arab Spring, another tiny piece on punishment in Oman for homosexuality compared to other nearby countries, and the government control over the media. Now that was interesting!Don't get me wrong. I have no problem with criticism where it's due, but dressing modestly and not drinking? Why not respect the culture of the nation that has graciously allowed you to live there? Is this really a New York Times bestseller? If so, I am shocked.

Some times you come across a book that just makes you take pause and think, "Could I have done this?" "Paw Prints in Oman: Dogs, Mogs and Me" is a book that did that for me. Like Charlotte, I am a huge animal lover... only I can't personally handle when they are hurt or dying. It just rips my guts to shreds. This is why I have so much respect for those able to pull up everything inside of them and help. Brought both smiles and tears to me, but I enjoyed it from start to finish. Charlotte you truly inspire me. Great book.

While this book certainly was a travelogue for Oman and the middle east, I wouldn't call it much of an animal story. Yes, she does work in a vets office, and has some rescues of her own, but it seemed largely about the culture and her friendships. Perhaps I should have read more reviews and I would have known this. Not the authors fault. I just saw the dog on the cover and figured it was a dog book. She does a very good job in describing the locale and peoples of Oman. However 2 things I could have done without; one the language of her friend in the clinic (if you don't like the f word you may want to skip past anything this lady says) and two her constant references to drinking. Wow, they drink a lot over there! Overall an engaging story, keeping in mind it happened 10 yrs ago. I imagine the culture has changed a good deal since then.

From the Author

It would make me crazy, hearing people misstate, and even mislead others about, what is in the United States Constitution.  Being the supreme law of the land, it's important to understand it.But nobody trusts sources anymore. We've been manipulated and led around for so long, I get that. So I ran every single word of the Constitution down one side of the page, and right beside it, translated the fancy words into a simple, 5th grade version of what it all means. It was important to me for every single word of the Constitution to be there, so anybody reading this can look at the original source and decide for themselves what it says. Since Constitution Translation for Kids was first released in 2006, hundreds of school districts - and many nonprofits dedicated to teaching civics - have adopted it as teaching material. Never let somebody else tell you what is in the Constitution, now you can see for yourself.

Thank goodness there are now authors who appreciate the younger audiences. If kids are exposed to our founding documents early in their academic grades, they will appreciate history more fully as they progress. I wish this book would have been available when I was younger. Buy this and another of my recommendations for students: "The Elementary Common Sense of Thomas Paine; An Interactive Adaptation for All Ages" here on Amazon. I have given copies of both these titles to my brother and extended family, and even donated copies to the local elementary and middle school.

Only two deficiencies I can see. (1) The militia is continually confused with the National Guard - a federal organization that didn't exist until one and a quarter centuries after the Constitution was written. (2) Ms Travis apparently can't distinguish between a restrictive clause and an independent phrase. Considering her task, though, I'm willing to cut her some slack: I'm selling my copy to a mother of two school-age daughters, rather than trashing it.

I have used this book several times for my college classes. I love the fact on the left column of the page is the actual wording of the Constitution and on the right column is the modern day language. Made it so easy to understand.

This excellent and easy to comprehend book is a MUST if you're learning or teaching the constitution. The pages are split down the middle. On the left are the words of the constitution, on the right is a reworded translation for children to easily understand the verbage without changing it's meaning. It is very clear, consise, and NON-INTIMIDATING! After struggling to create an interest in learning the constitution with my 3 homeschooled children ages 9-13, this has been what causes them to proclain History to be their favorite subject. I recommend this book.

I teach middle school Civics. When I heard Cathy Travis' interview on NPR, I ordered the book for my classes that were studying the Constitution. The students loved the book's explanations.

I finished the book in one sitting. This is a terrific product. Well written and very informative. Breaks it down so it's easier to understand! Recommended reading for anyone who needs a little history lesson since it isn't taught very well in the schools now!

Good.

I believe this book was very helpful to my children.

This book is great, but the execution is a bit strange. Instead of being a straightforward encyclopedia of the Adventure Time universe, it was written from the perspective of Marceline's dad Hunson Abadeer... who is essentially their world's devil. So all he does is make fun of the characters throughout the whole book and talk about how he'll enslave, murder, or soulsuck them. It's really creative, fun, and beautifully illustrated, but it might upset some younger kids who won't get the joke. I stopped reading it to my toddler who loves the series, because it confused her that it was so mean to characters she liked. Now she just enjoys looking at the artwork. But for an older kid or adult fan that loves Adventure Time I think it's great and carries on the offbeat nature of the show.

Written from the perspective of Hunson Abadeer, a minor character on the show Adventure Time, this book is a fun look at the world of Adventure Time through his eyes. The majority of the work centers around enumerating the major and minor characters of the Adventure Time show universe and giving general information about them as related through the episodes themselves. Further on in the book, there are a few additional chapters such as Ice King's "zine" about "Fiona & Cake", who will be familiar to most audiences of the show, and an Ooo Travel Guide by Princess Bubblegum. As an adult fan of Adventure Time, I was very pleased with the book and found it suitable to give to a friend's 10 year old son, who really enjoyed the book as well (he is a fan of the show). Note that while I have marked this book as "No Sex/Violence" (which is true), overly-sensitive parents might wish to be aware that there is a reference to two of the (non-human) characters running around "naked", and in one illustration, the male character Ice King is dressed up as a Sailor Moon knockoff (albeit very funnily within context). There is also one page that features a "plea" to remove the a character from the page in which he has been trapped. All in all, however, there is nothing particularly genuinely offensive in the book and as long as you stick with 10 and above, the content should be fine for most readers.

I absolutely love this book, the lore is incredible. The pictures are so bright and so vivid. It has everything that you could ever want to know about Adventure Time, you really won't find another Adventure Time book as informative and fun to read as this.

For those of you that don't know, Hunson Abadeer is not only the Lord of Evil, but also the father of Marceline the Vampire Queen. And he himself has compiled this unusually interesting book about all the people and places you know from the "Adventure Time" series on Cartoon Network. In this book, you'll find interesting biographies of a wide number of characters as well as a few things you may not know about them, too. Other things include special trading cards drawn by Ice King, an instruction manual for BMO, and intricate travel guides of all the places in the enchanted Land of Ooo among other bizarre stuff. And throughout these pages, you'll find notes and other scribbles courtesy of Finn, Jake, and Marceline, too, which make an interesting commentary of sorts. But don't get me wrong on this, but it seems that the Lord of All Evil knows a lot about things and beyond and makes him feel much smarter than you, too. Well, some facts are more revealing than others and you'd be better off not knowing some anyway. But, either way, I hope you can find more surprising secrets as long as you keep watching this phenomenal series on Cartoon Network.

I was very excited when I first heard this book was being made. I've been a huge AT fan since the show began and was hoping the book would be more like an actual encyclopedia of the Land of Ooo. I didn't get what I wanted but it's still pretty math!I think I would have much preferred the book be written by a scholar/historian living in Ooo. At times Abadeer's personal point of view gets boring and repetitive. This is especially evident in the A-Z mini-bio section where some characters are described simply by how useless Abadeer thinks they are and not giving any useful info about them. Also, his choice of vocabulary will have many kids frequently running to their parents to find out what his words mean. That can also be a plus for teaching new words, though. The sections I enjoyed most were the ones not written by Abadeer or sections where he isn't talking about the characters. BMO's manual is weird, but just the right amount. Ice King's hand drawn fan fiction and character cards are spot on. Abadeer's Novelty Spells and Curses is reminiscent of the ads you'd find in old comic books. Also, having Finn, Jake and Marceline's comments in the margins is pretty funny. The truth is, if you're an AT fan you've probably already bought this book. While I would have liked a more comprehensive guide book to Ooo with more detail, I think this book would be especially great for kids (as long as you don't mind helping them with the ten cent words) and fans that came to the show later who might not know as much about the setting.

How often do fans get to read draft versions of a favorite saga, glimpsing which elements were present from the beginning, how the story evolved, and various alternatives that were considered? For fans who relish such details, this is a book for you!Tolkien did not know at the outset what his story would be, but just began writing. Although he made numerous revisions to people and events, he stayed within the same framework rather than create something entirely new. Hence, the protagonists remained hobbits, the story opened with the birthday party, the hobbits leave the Shire, they arrive in Bree and meet a helpful stranger, they are pursued, and arrive in Rivendell. Tolkien foresaw the journey to Orodruin, that Gollum would play a role, and that the Shire would suffer, but did not yet Lothlorien, Saruman, Rohan or Gondor. Treebeard was originally envisaged as an enemy and the character who would become Strider/Aragorn as a hobbit ranger named Trotter. The bulk of Return of the Shadow follows the rewrites of various events from the Birthday party to the arrival in Rivendell. Some of the differences are minor, others more significant. The final two chapters focus on the failed attempt to cross the mountains and the entry into Moria. At this point, the party consisted of Gandalf, the shire hobbits, Trotter, and Boromir, although we see that Tolkien considered adding a dwarf and elf.Throughout the book, Christopher Tolkien adds his comments about the drafts and the story. It’s amazing enough that Tolkien saved his original material, even those scribbled on scraps of paper, but Christopher’s painstaking work organizing the versions, trying to figure out the order of writing, and deciphering script that was barely legible (in some cases, pencil with a different version overwritten in ink) is truly herculean. He notes discrepancies in maps and chronology, clarifies statements and passages, even admits when he doesn’t know what his father was thinking. What he does not do is describe any philosophical outlook or response to life events that influenced his tale or Middle Earth. You will need to look elsewhere for such an analysis.Parts of the book can be tedious if you’re not particularly interested in maps, coordinating dates, or reading three versions of a scene in a row. But if you are keen to observe the process of creation that resulted in Lord of the Rings, you will find this book fascinating.

The Return of Shadow explores the earliest drafts of Tolkien's masterpiece The Lord of the Rings. In doing so, you get repeated viewings of Tolkien's different drafts for the first chapters of the story. It feels like every time you get going, you wind up right back in Hobbiton again. I'd totally recommend this for anyone who wants to learn about the creation of the story or anyone who wants to study specific drafts of the Fellowship of the Ring, but if you read it front to back, be prepared for a bit of frustration as you keep getting thrown back to the beginning every time you get going.

The best and most accurate description of this series is a history of WRITING of the Lord of the Rings. It contains Tolkien's numerous revisions of the book before the final, settled account came out. For example, Frodo Baggins in a couple of early drafts presented in this book was named Bingo... Die-hard LOTR fans are saying, yeah, so what? The book is good for seeing the development of the story, but I hoped to find stories on more the background of Middle Earth itself, even more than in the Silmarrillon and other later additions to the history of Middle Earth. The fall of Numenor would make tremendous reading, wouldn't it? That tale is not in these books though. It is no fault Christopher Tolkien or his father that the tales don't appear. It does give you the feeling that LOTR was one vein in a tremendous gold mine of writing and that the mother-lode is still untapped.

Tolkien should be knighted by the british govt! this he deserves,a ld war one officer, a great father and a great writer a great mind who conceved rd of the rings and the hobbit,,its a sad day when he isn't recognized and people like jagger are, what an insult to humanity!

I like reading these books but I don't think very many others will. And I'm starting to get burned out on them. Previously I got the paperback edition of the first 5 books of this series. In the very first book there is a new story and it's a pretty good one. Some of the old stories are introduced to a traveler in the olden days. It's actually very interesting. But then it gets tedious. What is happening here is that JRR Tolkiens son Christopher went through all his Dads old papers to put these books together to show how JRR went about the process of writing Lord of the Rings. This volume and the next deal with Fellowship of the Ring. The story line you read sticks to the Fellowship line but it's different. This book shows the steps of character development. Ideas coming and going. Editing and rewrites. In short, to some folks this would be intensely boring. But I liked this book and I'm about half way through the next one, The Treason of Isengard. It's the same thing, the Fellowship story. Parts of what you read go from ideas that appeared in the Silmarillion to the end of tale of the Rings. Christopher Tolkien must have loved his father very much because he's put together an analytical series of books that leaves no comment untold, no idea unrevealed.
