This book is nothing short of brilliant. But what would one expect from Umberto Eco? It is an old, somewhat outdated, guide for students in Italian universities, who must, as undergraduates, produce a thesis. The book is a step by step guide in how to do this. I live in the United States where there is no such demand on undergraduates, and I am a high school English teacher. Yet I am in love with this book. Eco says that the researching and writing of an extended essay is an exercise in creativity and in exploration. Anyone who is interested in writing, particularly non-fiction, or who is in charge of student writers, from high school through graduate school, should add this to hen library--right alongside Fowler's, Strunk and White, and the OED. It is that good.

I have now ordered a copy for my university's library, and I'll recommend it to all of my research students. Eco's specific area of academic specialisation may be very different from yours, but that should not deter you from finding out more about this book: I am a researcher in finance and accounting and still found the book to be remarkably relevant.

I got this audible book to help me think about my dissertation proposal writing. I figure it can always be useful to be immersed in these process-based ideas to stay on target. This book was written over 30 years ago, and it is deeply relevant today. This is the kind of book that helps you think about your research while you're doing it, and the kind of book that any student undertaking a true social science research project can benefit from. There are many examples, and the reader does a good job of conveying the author's sense of humor and advisory comments.I am really glad I am listening to this on audible versus reading it because it just flows naturally and is fun to listen to.

Umberto Eco's instructional booklet on how to write a thesis is almost 40 years old, but was finally published in English translation. While much of the technology has changed (digital databases, Google,etc.) Eco's basic advice remains valuable. The basic approach to researching a topic, initiating a literature search, keeping track of your data, and compiling it into a sensible report remains the same. I enjoyed his many examples and his great dedication to making students understand what is involved.

Originally in Italian 1977, it was translated to English 1985 with some modifications to include the Chicago Manual of Style. It covers more than writing a thesis. The topics cover book research, bibliographical research, primary /secondary sources, writing style, avoiding plagiarism, content, quotes, paraphrases, tabled contents, margins, punctuations, the index card system Eco used. Eco frequently mentions the abbot Vallet inspiring him to research books, whom he included in his novel The Name of The Rose. abbot Vallet would later became his great mentor for academic humility for a book the abbot wrote in 1887. Umberto Eco a great academic and writer.

No matter if you're an undergraduate or a graduate student, this book can help you form good habits and help walk you through topic selection, note taking, and just staying on track and organized. I'm halfway through my dissertation and I still find plenty to use from this book.

A great read even if written in the 70's - much of the information inside is readily applicable to current times. A great quick read for nayone struggling with that thesis or dissertation process. And the snarkiness of the author will keep you laughing out loud ! A fun read.

The book contains a set of practical suggestions based not only in good writing practices, but also based on Eco's extensive academic experience, both as a writer and a student.Though some sections that refer to practical aspects of the investigation are outdated due to the advancements in technology, the text contains valuable, evergreen tips that are essential today as much as they were when the book was first published.I highly recommend it.

great authentic japanese regional cooking at its best. although not a comprehensive guide on making ramen from different prefectures.the gyoza recipes are excellent and tried it. it was so yummy.

I moved to Fiji after spending five years in Japan and I sorely missed ramen, kara-age, okonomiyaki, and yoshoku (Japanized western dishes). When I saw this cookbook, I doubted I would be able to make any of them here because of my lack of access to foreign ingredients. A few shops carry Japanese soy sauce (Kikkoman), sake, and mirin, but I couldn't find most of the ingredients listed by the cookbooks I bought in Japan. This wasn't the case with "Japanese Soul Cooking": because it's written for a foreign audience, it makes do with the most basic Japanese ingredients and even teaches how to make some condiments like Tonkatsu sauce from scratch. And because one of the authors is a Japanese chef, the recipes live up to my memory of the comfort food I enjoyed in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Hiroshima. And the best part is, they're not complicated at all: I was able to make three recipes from this book in just one week (they were all hits, by the way, especially the Nagoya Tebasaki). I'd recommend this to those who are missing authentic Japanese soul food, no matter where they are (as long as they have access to soy sauce, sake, mirin, miso, and dashi, they're all set).Here's what you can make with this cookbook: Ramen (Shoyu, Miso, and Shio Ramen, among others), Gyoza (includes recipes for homemade rayu & miso dipping sauce), Curry (without the boxed roux!), Tonkatsu (with recipes for panko & tonkatsu sauce, Furai & Korokke (plus how to make Japanese-style tartar sauce and salads), Kara-age (with a recipe for homemade ponzu), Tempura (with step-by-step pictures for making the batter), Okonomiyaki (both Osaka and Hiroshima styles, plus takoyaki and yakisoba), Donburi (nine variations of pure comfort), Soba (hot & cold dishes), Udon (wide range from classics to a modern cold version with fresh tomatoes), Itame & Chahan (stir-fries and fried rice), and Yoshoku (gratins, steaks, and pasta).Highly recommended. I just realized i hadnt written a review for this book. It is a wonderful resource. I always intend to cook more from it -- and i will! -- but the few things I HAVE tried have been divine. It is worth the cost just for the gyoza recipe. (I have made a million dumplings over the eons too). gyoza wrappers are so much more delicate -- and this version has you lightly salt the cabbage and then squeeze out -- SO much easier than precooking -- and so much better a texture than just tossing in raw. I will go in and cook more -- but needed to add my bravo to this great book!!

This book is a dream find for me! It contains so many of the foods my mother made (she is from Shikoku) when I was growing up! While I make curry, yakisoba, oyako donburi, and the like, this book allows me to make so many of my childhood favorites. Thank you so much to the authors for this enticing trip down memory lane!

I recently read that over 100,000 Japanese restaurants now exist . . . outside of Japan. This terrific cookbook captures some of the more popular dishes, and they are indeed comfort/soul food. We have a generous library of cookbooks, and this is one of my favorites. Great recipes, ample photos, and one of the best recipes I've ever tried for one of the top "soul food" dishes popular in Japan itself, curry, only this one has a special "Battleship Curry" included. Nothing super esoteric or overly fancy here, no Kaiseki, just darn good recipes which you'll enjoy making over and over again!

This book is superb. Great for the home cook and not loaded with complex time consuming processes. I have the Simply Ramen book which is nice, but the raman soup base recipes are a bit laborious. I have made them and have the time to do so, but think the Soul Food approach is about as good. I am not a sushi fan so this book is great as it covers street food which I prefer.

I was really happy to find this book on home style cooking from Japan. I grew up in Japan and was getting frustrated that most books in English had the same kinds of recipes but not really home style ones. Typically sushi, tempura, things that many people in Japan don't really make at home. I enjoyed the photos, too.

This book paid for itself with one recipe! I made the Retro Curry yesterday and it was the best Japanese curry I’ve had since visiting Osaka last year. We’ve eaten Japanese curry many times but it’s usually mediocre and lacking flavor and depth. The curry we had in Osaka was a whole different experience and I have been searching ever since for something comparable but have found nothing outside of Japan. In Japanese restaurants in China and Thailand even we found nothing like it. So you have to understand how excited I was to make my first attempt at a recipe out of this book and find it was something I’ve been searching for for the last year.Now I’m looking forward to trying more recipes. If they are at or even near the quality of the curry, this book will become my favorite cookbook of all time!

I had this strategy guide previously and it was lost during a move and this replacement purchase was in excellent condition. When I purchase a used copy of the Kingdom Hearts 2 disc and a refurbished PS-2 console, I needed this guide to refresh my memory on this game because, i had not played it for several years.

I bought this copy "used" from the seller and it was in such pristine condition I couldn't believe it. The guide itself is full of really helpful information to give you the most well rounded KH2 experience and I got a really good price considering the condition my book came in was way better than I had expected.

Arrived with 12 pages totally loose and sitting inside book, with an additional 5 more pages that came out. Have used half a roll of tape to try to somewhat secure.

Before I purchased this book I called Amazon to make sure it came with the mind tap code she reassured me the book did WRONG! This book does not come with a mind tap access code meaning you will have to spend an extra hundred dollars just to access all the class materials such as the cases etc.

I rented this book for a college class that I am taking this quarter. I have actually really enjoyed the book and found it very useful. It is not dry and boring as many would think a law textbook might be. The examples and stories are relevant to anyone who has ever entered or even thought about entering into a contract. If you are thinking of starting a business, or even just wonder how different types of businesses and contracts work I would suggest this textbook as a great resource. In fact, I find it so useful that I plan to purchase it at the end of the quarter instead of returning it as a rental!

I was satisfied with this rental. I do like to take photos of the arrival condition for my own protection, however. I will not be up-charged for damage that already existed. This book was in the best condition of my rental lot.

Used for my Business Law class. Very easy to read, very direct, great introduction. Wish it wasn't a textbook with textbook prices, I'd love to simply own a copy as a quick, generalized reference guide.

This book gave me what I feel is a balanced and professional insight into an issue of a new form of murder that is most probably being carried out in China today. It reminds me of the saying "Never again" that was heard after the Nazi Holocaust in the last century. Sadly to day the world is hearing "Once again!" because of live organ harvesting of prisoners and prisoners of conscience.

I had already read through the book before I purchased it. My friend recommended it to me and I read it within few days. I was deeply shocked and felt hard to believed the crime happening in China now in the modern society. I decided to buy one for myself for further reading and collection. I hope everyone can read this book! HIGHLY ROCOMMANDED!

Human life is the most precious. This book exposes the greatest tragedy of our time - complete disregard of human life value. Gangsters took over a nation and brutally persecute tens of thousands of innocent people in the most evil and inhumane way that ever existed in history - forced live organ harvesting. I will recommend and I hope that every person around the world read this book and try to understand the facts and the messages it carries.

I am hoping everyone will read this book. It is appalling what is happening in the "People's" Republic of China. The PRC admits to using executed prisoners for 90% of organ "donations". The rest of the world is left to believe that these executed prisoners are guilty of a recognizably capital offense, and have received a fair trial with adequate legal defense in a legitimate legal setting, and have given consent. This is not the case. Why so few are investigating this situation, like governments and media, is very interesting. And the complicity and cooperation among pharmaceutical companies, medical schools and scholarly journals is also very interesting.

Highly recommended as the authors of this book were risking their life to reveal crime against humanity by the Chinese Communist Regime that has never happened on this planet.

From the 1970's when the first transplant operations were performed in China, the only source of replacement organs was from executed prisoners.An exponential increase in transplant operations started in 2000, concurrent with the persecution of Falun Gong. It is estimated that between 40-60 thousand Falun Gong practitioners may have died to fulfill transplant requirements to Chinese and foreign recipients. Christians, Uighurs and other minorities may also have been killed as a result of the practice.This barbaric, state sponsored practice brings back memories of the Nazi Holocaust, but is possibly on a larger and more organised scale as China expands into a international market economy!An interesting and informative read for the general reader and an excellent introduction for those researching this topic!

Love all Todd Parr’s books and illustrations but this one in particular is my favorite. Love this one the most because it reinforces the important message to kids to be grateful and thankful for what you have. Initially planned on keeping with our (seasonal) Thanksgiving book collection but now have it out year round on our bookshelf.

I wish they had this book when I was growing up. This book and other Todd Parr books teach the reader emotional lessons that are critical for anyone to develop into a functional, emotionally non reactive adult. If you are an adult and weren't prepared properly to be an adult by your parents, it's not too late- read Todd Parrs book.Always an emotional and meaningful experience for me when I read these books, they hit a lot of sore spots, but they get through to me each and every time!

Now, a retired kindergarten teacher, I first ran into a Todd Parr book by accident. The title: The Dos and Don'ts of Underwear.It became the most requested book in both sections of kdgn. The kids loved the book and laughed out loud everytime I read it. His style and kid-like drawings were a hit. I now have/own all of his books and just recently bought: The Thankful Book.It is delightful and ALL can relate to the subject matter. I have given away numerous copies of The Grandma Book and TheGrandpa Book to friends having their first grandchild. Don't hesitate! All of Todd Parr's books are GREAT and a starting pointfor discussions and writing a book of your own!

Very cute, silly and can evoke great conversation! Our 4 year old granddaughter stopped her mom after the first page and asked her what she was thankful for! The words are few but it's a great theme and important to remember gratitude!

The colorful pictures and down-to-earth text were enthusiastically received by the young children at my church. I used the book for the children's sermon just before Thanksgiving and then donated the book to the church library.

We have many of the Todd Parr books, and I just love the positive message in all of his books. My son is 7 and still loves them as well. The illustrations are very different from any author illustrator and the multi-colored people and body parts make for a wide interpretation of the words on the page. The books are simple and short, but we come back to them over and over again. I highly recommend this one, which focuses on being thankful for different aspects of life.
