We Need New Names is a lush, language-rich narration by a young African girl who gradually becomes an expat in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The narrator's voice has a wonderful innocence, even as she and her playmates (I'd say schoolmates but the teachers have all left the country and the school closed) play such games as "Find Bin Laden." She also has a special gift for capturing expressions on other characters' faces: "like she was hearing music inside her head and dancing to it" is a description of the expression of an aunt who has been complimented by an old flame who is marrying someone else.The disintegration of the home country, the desperate desire to be somewhere else, and the bitterness of those left behind are rendered in muscular, lyrical prose studded with native ("our language" which is never identified) and childish phrases. The description of eating the guavas (on which she used to gorge herself as a child) for the first time since coming to the U.S. Is worth the price of admission: funny, tender, voracious, and yearning.The only piece of this novel that hit a sour note for me was a chapter at the end of the book narrated by a "we" rather than the "I" in every other chapter. It consisted of a lyrical, wild description of the labor of largely undocumented newcomers to the US. While beautiful in its own right, and easily capable of being a brilliant standalone essay, it was oddly out of place, especially as our narrator herself had barely begun to work. It sounded like an angry political squawk in an otherwise equally powerful but more subtle birdsong that is ultimately more personal and persuasive.

NoViolet Bulawayo's debut novel WE NEED NEW NAMES is an original, and a stunning work.It has been identified as a coming of age work--with the central character of Darling. It has been described as having a plot that moves from Darling's childhood in Zimbabwe, to her coming to America, and her experiences as she moves into adulthood.I don't disagree with these descriptions; I just find them inadequate.First, this is definitely not a plot driven work. Certainly you can follow a progressive story line--but the story being told is of an interior landscape rather than a series of external adventures.Second, as the novel progresses, it settles into a shifting kaleidoscope of alternating focus--Darling's experiences; the larger geopolitical scene; and the interior anguish of people unmoored in their place in time and country.This novel is not for the faint of heart. There was at least one chapter that, frankly, I would have rather not read. And the experiences of Darling in Zimbabwe are searing--as befits the current geopolitical scene. There is the genuine heartbreak of leaving and losing one's country.One of the reviews--in the New York Times--wrote about the third chapter from the conclusion."At one point, in an effort to make Darling’s experiences broadly representative, Ms. Bulawayo writes an entire chapter using the plural pronoun “we” — speaking of the move to America, and the bitterness so many immigrants feel, as they are forced to take menial jobs or find their hopes frustrated...Such generalizations are the one misstep in this otherwise stunning novel. Not only because they try to project one point of view onto the experiences of a wide and varied group of immigrants, but also because they are not always true."And as evidence of this assertion, the review writer points out that NoViolet Bulawayo has flourished as an immigrant.TALK ABOUT MISSING THE POINT. Yes, this is a story of an immigrant, and of immigrants. But MORE SO--it is a story about losing one's country, one's connection to ancestors, one's place in the past and the future.For just that near final chapter alone--titled "How They Lived"--WE NEED NEW NAMES is a most compelling work.

This writing in this book is as creative as the author's nom de plume, No Violet. Her unusual use of language in showing the reader life in Zimbabwe through the eyes of a special wise child, becomes part of the reader's experience. Then, she juxtaposes it with her new life in cities she dreamed of in the USA. Neither is perfect. But she is self-possessed enough to navigate and explain the world of immigrants. "Undocumented" has become a loaded word. But her words render humor and compassion. Equal to her favorite book, "The Haidresser of Harare", she shines a light on life in post colonial Africa . Junot Diaz chose her as an outstanding new voice. I agree.

This novel is the story of a young African girl who eventually leaves her homeland to come to America. Her life in Africa is described in rich, textured detail. You really get the descriptive sense of what she was experiencing; the sights, smells, and sounds. Even though she was living in extreme poverty and experiencing political oppression, she managed to create a childhood for herself and her friends. The description of her acclimating to life in cold, snowy Michigan is masterful. So is the development of the second half of the novel, as she tries to balance her life as an American, while trying to retain her African identity. A throughly engaging read.

Well this was my first digital textbook and it is very disappointing. The book does not work on my Kindle paper white, and it does not work on Kindle cloud reader. Luckily I have an iPad, which does allow the kindle to display this book. So much for cross platform functionality.

I currently work at a startup, and one of the hats I routinely wear is "PM" aka Product Manager, Project Manager, Product Marketing, Problem Maker, etc. I have some formal education in the form of a Certificate in Project Management through a program that is recognized by the Project Management Institute. The core text of most project management programs is the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, which is also known as the PMBOK. If this is your first foray into the formal discipline of project management, I'd suggest getting a copy of the PMBOK and skipping this book entirely. The PMBOK gives a very structured overview about the study of project management and it contains several intuitive flowcharts and diagrams that clearly illustrate the principles and goals of good project management. The PMBOK is effectively an ideal framework that project management professionals reference ~ I've been a PM for nearly five years now and I still flip through my PMBOK every once in a while.While the PMBOK gives a good overview about the discipline of project management, it doesn't actually go into detail on how to do stuff. Knowing about a work breakdown structure and actually building one are two very different things ~ and that is where Project Management Tools and Techniques A Practical Guide tries to come in. By combining the concepts of the PMBOK with modern project management software tools, this book tries to build competence through practical application using Microsoft Project. At the end of the day, this is a textbook written for students of project management ~ It is not an introductory book and it probably won't appeal to your average person, unless of course, they are a project management nerd who also happens to be interested in learning a half-dozen ways to create an estimate or how to calculate a critical path. I spent about a week and a half with this book and I've read multiple sections from it ~ to be brutally honest, I found the material to be rather dry and a bit hard to follow. Some sections read like a design-language review about why Microsoft Project does things a certain way. The element appreciated the most were the ProjectNMotion tutorials and multiple references back to the PMBOK, since they provided me with a better understanding of what the authors were trying to convey.

I think the key part of this book's title comes in "tools and techniques." It also say "a practical guide," and I'm not sure it's completely practical. One of the exercises early on in the book is to ask the reader (or student) to list all of the templates in Microsoft Project 2010. Wow, list the templates you can see by opening a program, one of many project programs and also one that is already outdated (2013 is the new release). That's a tool, barely practical--at least you don't the need the book for that.Anyway, the book veers off to a myriad of decision analysis tools. These aren't really project management tools. In fact, I'm not sure really where they'd be applied except maybe if you were an auditor or maybe just a managerial consultant looking to analyze the costs and structure of an organization. These have value. I like the book. But I wouldn't give book this to a newly hired project manager or someone who is in another discipline and now will be managing a project. In the end, this feels like a good business evaluation book, just not a good project management book.

This book didn't have a whole lot of what I'd find useful in project management. It definitely is mainly about "tools" primarily meaning Microsoft Project, so if that's not what you use there's not going to be much here for you. You have to have a good knowledge of the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK) going in, so definitely not for beginners to the field and you won't find anything here about actually managing and leading a team of people. It assumes the reader is in the field of IT and is geared entirely to that area. I found the writing very dry and hard to follow a lot of times. Ultimately this just isn't a book I personally found useful but for someone heavily into using Project to track their projects and is already well versed in the various aspects of PM, there may be some good information here.

The photographs of Pettifers, Temple Guiting and Gresgarth were particularly magnificently flower-filled. And the photos of some of the gardens planted in the last decade's New Perennials (grasses and large drifts of perennials) style also showed an attractive vision of what these gardens look like at their best.But, in keeping with Richardson's desire for serious criticism, I will point out a couple of things that would have made the book better: First, there sometimes seems to be a disconnect between Andrew Lawson's photos and Richardson's text. One example: Richardson asserts that "perhaps the most successful part of the Tilbury House garden is the walled kitchen garden to the south-west," and describes it at length in appetite-whetting terms, but I could not find a single photo of this "most successful part" of the garden, which was quite disappointing.Another small quibble is the lack of garden maps or plans, which are unfortunately all too rare among garden books. I spent quite a bit of time puzzling out the overall layout of each garden -- something Richardson tries to describe, but not always with success. A picture is worth a thousand words.But these points aside, "The New English Garden" is one of the most important garden books to be published this year in terms of garden writing, and certainly among the more beautiful. Written by Tim Richardson and photographed by Andrew Lawson, Jane Sabire and Rachel Warne, it is an intimate tour of 25 visually spectacular English gardens, all of which were either made or re-designed in the last ten years. Weighing in at more than five pounds, it consists of 300-plus pages and is ten by twelve inches, and so is a solid coffee table book that demands to be left out for anyone interested to peruse. Each garden is covered in ten to fifteen sumptuous pages, and you could do much worse that to study one garden each day with your morning coffee, in these dark days of late fall and early winter.English gardening is, at the present moment, at a very interesting inflection point. The 1990s saw the zenith of the “tapestry tradition”, the Arts & Crafts, color-blending movement and the beginning of a less floral, more naturalistic wave, led by the Dutch and German designers. Prominent among them is Piet Oudolf, for example and his famous “Dutch Wave”, that gives greater prominence to the whole plant and its structures in all seasons, than to its floral expression at one brief moment of glory. This new style has been met and matched in England by a more relaxed English style of gardening associated with the gardening legend Beth Chatto and others, in what is called the New Perennial Movement. And recently, there has been a reaction against both of these new waves and a return to a more traditional and familiar English style and vernacular.So this book fascinatingly explores this very vital moment of design flux, that is so very rich in inspiration and possibility. Thoughtful and amazing plant combinations and re-combinations are beautifully presented and detailed. Often a garden profile includes pictures of the garden in late autumn or winter, rimed in frost or dusted with an early light snowfall, and how beautiful these pictures are. The colors and the flowers are sculpturally subtracted, emphasizing the inherent beauty of the compositional plant forms, surely a revealing test of any garden’s underlying design. To me, these are some of the most interesting pictures in this book.There are some very famous gardens presented here, such as Christopher Lloyd’s Great Dixter and the Prince of Wales’ amazing garden at Highgrove, but it also presents the brand new massed plantings of the Olympic Park in London from 2012, as well as the sublime Gresgarth (by Arabella Lennox-Boyd) and Bury Court (by Piet Oudolf). "Destructive Emotions" is an account of one of the earliest meetings of the Mind and Life Symposium. These events started as a way for the Dalai Lama to learn how western science can be compared, contrasted, and perhaps integrated - as he has said repeatedly, "If science proves Buddhism wrong, then Buddhism must change."This particular meeting drove Richard Davidson's original imaging experiments examining the effects of meditation on the brain. By showing how meditation affected brain structure and activity, the scientific arguments for meditation were made. The description of the experiments and their implications is a major feature of this book, and is worth a read for anyone interested in the origins of the mindfulness movement.For a document covering both science and spirituality, it's surprisingly accessible. Daniel Goleman writes lucidly. You don't need to be a scientist or a Buddhist to enjoy reading this book.

In general, I liked this book and found it useful. I thing it contains a lot of good concepts, but because of the dialogue format it is difficult to get one's arms around all the concepts. There are also some holes that are left unaddressed, again probably because of the format.Given the above context, I think that there are many gems in this book and a lot of practical advice. Reading the dialogue between all these prominent people is thought provoking and challenges you to consider the underlying assumptions of your own emotional life.There is a lot of good advice in this book about handling destructive emotions, but the scope is actually wider than that. I found it to be more of an exploration of the nature of emotion and how to live with emotions in a balanced way.There are advantages and disadvantages to this approach to writing. There are a number of reviews that praise this book and others that shoot it down. I think the reality is somewhere in the middle.The people engaged in the dialogue are great choices, but somehow when the book went to print I think the written form missed capturing the full spirit of what went on at the actual event. I wasn't there, but I get a sense that in the transfer from speaking to writing some important meanings didn't come across.In spite of my feedback above, I wouldn't be discouraged from buying this book. It is unique and has a lot to say. My three star rating is merely an indication that I think the information could have been presented better and perhaps elaborated on in a way that brought the concepts more to life.

Years ago, thinking the Dalai Lama doesn't lead a normal life in the midst of a chaotic society, I did not study his teaching until I had a chance to read this book. Boy was I wrong! He understands human emotions at the deepest and most profound level that no man or psychologist has before. When translated and explained in lay men's terms, I can now hope that Buddhism will bring tremendous relief to the stressed out working population of the US. We allow our negative emotions too much control.This book will lead most of us out of our dark cell into a happier place.

I bought this one for my 8 year old, but it is the little guys who loves it. Something about that Owl-Eyed Ogre.....he is totally captivated. He is the type of child to ask me to read book after book, but rarely the same one again right away, but this one he BEGS me to read again as soon as it is done. He covers his eyes with his blankey when the scary parts come up, peeking just enough. I can't help myself from emphasizing the really dramatic parts, just to really get him going! Bill Peet is obviously a gifted man who understands children and writes books that are easy and fun to read. I wonder if he read his books out loud before finalizing them?? They are all so well written, whether in rhyme or not(this one is not), and have such a natural flow to them. They are easy to get into, and just such a pleasure to read. After refusing to read this one out loud AGAIN last night, my son picked out a new popular book, "Dragons Love Tacos," which I really don't care for to begin with, but as a follow up to Peet's Clyde, it really looked and sounded lame and downright pathetic! It really made me appreciate this book even more! There are plenty of cute, catchy popular new books on the market, and don't get me wrong we do have and love many of them, but there is something about a classic tale like this, moral and eloquent as all Peet's books are, full of magic and wonder. Like a modern but timeless fairytale....complete with silly sound effects:)

Bill Peet is one of my favorite kids book authors. I read these as a kid, got them for my kids, nieces and nephews and have put away a set for for my grandchildren someday. The stories and characters are always well designed and draw kids in. The illustrations are bright and colorful while still being somewhat simplistic giving them a lovable cartoon appearance. The stories have great moral and life lessons told in a fun way. These stories have stood the test of time and have been loved by many in my family

as a grandmother, i have owned this book - now three times. my children loved it so much that my son took it to college with him to always feel the happiness we had when reading it together. i still own a copy and just bought a book for my grandson. i have a picture on my wall of my daughter reading it to my grandson. he frequently says :kerpuffle when things go the way he wants them to. it is a wonderful story of overcoming things that you may not know you can do and then find out then you certainly can! great fantasy and learning book!

Sir Galavant, the dim-witted noodle head (his words, not mine), is so gung-ho on finding a horrible ogre to defeat, that when he does find one he races in without a thought. Clyde, his noble and also fearful steed, sees the foolishness in this but won’t be able to do a thing about it unless he can work up the courage and act… or at least just act. Kids may learn, in this story, that behaving bravely is maybe just about as good as being brave. All my kids love this story and I don’t mind reading it, for the lesson and for the fun.

Bill Peet has been a family favorite author since 1978. I read them to my son in the 70's. Bought every one I could find for my grandchildren, and now am purchasing for that same son's newly arrived twin boys. I recently asked my first three grandchildren if they still had their Bill Peet books and discovered that they plan to NEVER (said emphatically) get rid of them. In addition, they are still read because they take them on babysitting jobs to read to their charges who also LOVE them.

This is a great story about facing one's fears and being brave for the sake of a friend. It's one of my 7-year-old grandson's favorites. The illustrations are cute, too.

My grandsons love hearing this story read to them every time they visit. Good lesson on having courage even when you're not feelin' it.

This was perhaps my favourite book before third grade, and it is my son's first pick also. I hope more kids get to read it. Bill Peet books all typically have a good morale built into clever verbiage.
