I truly am enjoying reading this book. It is a required for a Spanish American Civilization course, but it has become a must-read. I enjoy all the interesting tidbits it has about my Hispanic roots. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in knowing true facts of Latin America or simply wants to further their knowledge on the subject. More teachers should include it as their required textbook for similar classes. Even though, it was written by people from U.S. and not Latin Americans, they truly conveyed the core of the subject matter.

SIMPLE BOOK THAT SUMMARIZES THE HISTORY OF LATIN AMERICA

I used this book for one of my courses, but I wasn't too found of this particular text. Although I did enjoy the class, this book wasn't too fun to read.

:)

read like a school textbook, held somewhat dated history and viewpoints, nothing you cant get off the interweb for free

Came promptly and even though it was used looked fantastic. Very useful for my need and I didn't have any problem with it.

This book gives the main facts about Latin America. However, it has an anti-American overall tone to it. Also, it does not explain all the religious concepts, and it needs a better reference glossary.

Ancient, Ancient: Short Fiction, by Kiini Ibura Salaam

Review

The world as Salaam paints it is full of harsh and beautiful things.... The best of her work is imbued with subtle interventions which ultimately provide the reader with sharply felt revelations.... The stories work from mutual touchstones: the illustration of sex as an act of power; a visceral relationship to the human body...; and the examination of the struggle to find oneself, particularly as a woman, in a world that offers so few options. ... [T]his accomplished collection provides a vigorous exploration into Salaam's unique vision.--Richard Larson, Strange Horizons

NOTES ON DIVERSITY:This is another case where diversity is not really the right word to use here.1 This is a book of stories where, with one or two exceptions, the focus is on Black womanhood. Sometimes those Black women are in space. Sometimes they coexist alongside gods. Sometimes they live in New York and are beset by nostalgia for Louisiana. Sometimes they are aliens who communicate through dance. But unifying the collection of stories is a deep exploration of Black womanhood. It is a book written within a lived experience for others of that lived experience. It reminds me, in that sense, of Constance Burris’ BLACK BEAUTY.2All philosophizing aside, this book is full of characters of color. And women. And it has some queer representation.REVIEW:Salaam is a lovely, poetic writer. From her language choice to the actual structure of the stories themselves, most of the stories in this collection are lyrical and haunting. One of the clearest themes throughout all the stories is sex, which in virtually all cases3 is a powerfully positive and healing force in women’s lives. In stories like “Desire” and the trio of stories featuring the unnamed alien race represented by WaLiLa and MalKai who feast on human nectar (that is drawn out by way of sex), sex and sexuality is arguably coerced--but still, the power of it and the emotional connection it brings proves healing. Or at the very least complicated. The women in the stories remain agentic throughout even when used as vessels. But I was more drawn to some of the other themes woven through the stories.4 Movement-as-freedom and movement-as-communication comes up again and again. Most clearly in the WaLiLa and MalKai stories, where WaLiLa and MalKai must learn to forsake their original language of movement/dance for spoken human languages, and again in “Battle Royale.” In “Battle Royale”, the narrator’s insistence on engaging in the flashing game/dance of razors leads to the fever-dream punishment meted out by his grandfather. But movement, or the lack of it, and how it can bring a different kind of freedom comes up in “Debris”, too. There is an openness in Salaam’s resolutions that I enjoyed. Many of the stories were about a change of direction, a decision point, and were other writers would tell you where the characters were going, Salaam refuses to reveal what happens next. The conflict was that there was a decision to make, she seems to suggest. The trick of her stories is that there emotional gratification in knowing that a decision was made, but we don’t know which path was taken.Salaam’s stories are fascinating. In particular, I liked “Debris”, “Ferret”, and “Ancient, Ancient”. “Rosamojo” was hard for me to read--I found it triggering--but it is a very good story._____1: I need to write this post already about My Issues With The Word Diversity.2: Although, if you’re into short speculative fiction featuring Black characters you should really check out BLACK BEAUTY, too.3: The exception to this is “Rosamojo”. It is a very good story, but if you are triggered by sexual assault, especially as a survivor of childhood trauma, tread with caution.4: I’m ace, man, I’m not getting the same sex-as-rapture thing these characters are getting.

I love short stories and Salaam's collection was wonderfully different. I didn't know what I was getting into, but I was quickly caught up in her various worlds.Desire: The opening story took me straight to Africa and warring, ancient gods and a woman who rediscovers her sexuality after years of marriage and children. I felt for all the characters, mortal and immortal. One of my equal second favourites. The next three stories (Of Wings, Nectar and Ancestors, MalKai's Last Seduction and At Life's Limits) are about WaLiLa and her group, and they are strange and wonderful. I don't want to say too much and spoil the magic of these three. But I tell you, I found my body swaying after the last story to invisible music and my feet tapping.I've read Rosamojo before and it makes me alternately mad and sad every time I read it. I want to wrap my arms around her, but she doesn't need me. She's strong.Battle Royale and Ferret both perplexed and intrigued me.K-USH: The Legend of the Last Wero was my other equal second favourite of the collection. I would like to read more about these people.Marie was fantastic, a story about a woman rediscovering herself and her culture. I cheered for her.The final story, Pod Rendevous, blew me away. Loved it. Again, I would like to read more about this culture. So much of this collection was about metamorphosis, either just about to happen or in the thick of it. This is a beautifully realised collection that will open your eyes and your mind.

I bought this book after finding out it was a co-winner of the 2012 James Tiptree, Jr. Award. As one might expect from this award the book is a powerful commentary on gender relations but also well-crafted fiction. However if one is a casual reader of science fiction, fantasy, or horror this type of book may be quite frustrating for you. You cannot read it quickly, you cannot read it casually, you must engage with each story one at a time, you must roll the ideas and images in your head for a while to understand and appreciate them.Salaam's work goes beyond gender discussion into race issues, family dynamics, personal conflicts, and the a multitude of possible futures, pasts, and alternatives. None of her characters -- female or male -- are perfect or straightforward. If you can handle that then this book may be well worth your effort. For teachers out there this would be a very powerful book to include in a contemporary literature, gender studies, or race studies course but you will have to devote a few weeks to it to fully get students through it and to help them wrestle with the concepts.

Salaam's a true master of the craft; I read her to learn as much as to enjoy. Her plots are delicately constructed, but I think of them in jeweler's terms. They are the setting for the gems that are her scenes that ooze passion, emotion, and sensuality. With clever formatting, she achieves cinematic intercut scenes, modulates the voice of characters to let us see them from the inside, and shows the scene from such different perspectives, your head spin if it wasn't all so enthralling.People who know my work should note, Salaam writes with an unabashed sexuality. If you prefer my LDS chick lit, this is *definitely* different. Be ready to check preconceptions and inhibitions at the door. In Salaam's world, the depths of one man's shame are as expansive as our universe and the fall of an angel from a religion older than time evokes a soft pain washed away by morning. A former student of Octavia Butler and Nalo Hopkinson, Kiini Ibura Salaam takes the genre in new and mind blowing directions.

From Publishers Weekly

Bernstein, a neurologist who suffered her first migraines in her 20s, teaches at Harvard Medical School and is on staff at the Cambridge Health Alliance, where she founded the Women's Headache Center. With journalist McArdle, she presents a clear and comprehensive analysis of the migraine brain. Noting that there are about 30 million migraine sufferers in the U.S., Bernstein reveals that migraine is a complex neurological disease that affects the central nervous system. A severe headache is just one of its symptoms: others may be nausea, vomiting, visual changes or sensitivity to light or sound: the authors help readers identify the triggers that can bring on an attack (such as stress, insufficient sleep, menstrual periods or a host of other factors). Bernstein then helps the migraineur develop a personalized plan to prevent, abort, or rescue. The authors include research on the new triptan meds, which can interrupt the neurochemical reaction of an attack and halt a migraine in its tracks, as well as info on preventive medications (i.e., beta-blockers and antidepressants) and such alternative methods as biofeedback and acupuncture. Bernstein approaches the reader as she might patients—creatively, scientifically and sympathetically—offering a range of tactics and treatments to help migraine sufferers control and mitigate their pain. I have been a migraine sufferer for many years and since I hit my 40's they have gotten so much worse been so disruptive to my every day life. I've pretty much tried every medication and therapy there is to try and I was and still am so frustrated at the inability to treat my migraines. However reading Dr. Bernstein's book was such an eye opener for me. I felt she had a true compassion and understanding for migraine patients and I was impressed at how she explained the migraine brain and what triggers migraines for so many people. She draws on her knowledge of so many years and gives examples of patients she has treated which really humanizes what so many migraine sufferers experience. It can be such an isolating condition to have, as many people who do not suffer from migraines cannot possibly understand how debilitating and disruptive they can be to your life. I am currently being treated at the Stanford Headache Clinic and even though they are probably one most well known institutions out there I don't feel that I got the same in depth explanations as to my condition EVER. I have kept a migraine diary for years and nobody at the clinic or even any of the many neurologists or doctors I have seen over the years have ever really took the time to review it. I had to figure out myself that my migraines were hormonally triggered and be my own advocate to try to find a solution to my problem. Popping different pills is not really the answer. Now after reading this book, I found I have a whole new set of knowledge that I can use to try to get past chornic migraines. So to all the migraine sufferers out there - I highly recommend this book!

I've had migraines for 15 years. I didn't learn anything new from this book, but I found it to be a realistic, practical guide for managing migraines. I appreciated the alternative treatments that were discussed, since I am currently pregnant and can't/won't take medications, and nothing I've tried ever really worked for me anyway. I've found that a dark room and an ice pack does wonders. I would have to disagree with the author about food triggers though... she asserts that a food is only a trigger if you get a migraine within 2 hours of eating it. I am definitely affected much longer than 2 hours after ingesting my triggers, can be up to 12 hours for me.

I've suffered from migraines for 25 years now. There's things in this book that I have never had my doctors or neurologists tell me. It explains so much! I've always felt that my migraines were linked to certain parts of my body, but doctors haven't listened to me. I found some helpful advice that I've been able to put to good use to reduce attacks and relieve pressure/pain. I've recommended it to my sisters who all also suffer from migraines.

I have been suffering from Migraines since the age of 10 and I have to say that this book is one of the best on the subject. Having lived with migraines for some time I have amassed a library of reference material to help me understand the condition. The book does a really good job at explaining what is going on in your brain and the treatments available. The chapters are well organized and one does not have to read the book in order to seek the information you need. Overall very satisfied with the purchase and this is one of the books I will maintain as an excellent resource.

I've had migraines most of my life, but until a few years ago, only occasionally, and with easily identifiable triggers. That changed, and migraines took over my life. After one particularly debiliating migraine, I knew I had to do something. I thought I understood migraines, but I realized how little I knew when I read this well-written and well-organized book. Got it first from the library, then ordered a copy for myself to study. I will be using it as a template as I work with my physician to develop a plan to manage my migraines, and hopefully return my life to something closer to normal. Dr. Bernstein wrote about migraine in ways that I immediately identified with, taught me many things about it I did not know, showed me how to keep a headache diary, and what signs to look for that could help me "catch" my migraines earlier, and thus minimize their impact on my life. The book explains about different types of medicine and other options for treatment, so that as my doctor and I develop my plan, I can be an informed participant. Already I have noticed some improvements, and have adapted the sample charts in the book for my own circumstances. Certainly, I am much more aware of what my body and brain are trying to tell me. It gives me optimism that my life can open up again. And it impressed my doctor that I had already begun keeping the kind of records he needs to help me sort things out!

Will finish reading it because I paid for it but not really a great book. It was just a continuous promotion of herself and the book. There were some good examples but I would definitely get something more current. The pharmacotherapy options in this book is already outdated.

Very informative book. Some of the information I was aware of, but there was much that I did not know. This is a very helpful book when getting ready for Dr. appointments. I sent copies to family members that also suffer from migraines. I'm very glad someone who suffers from migraines and also has the ability to write such a helpful book has taken the time to do so.

This is an absolutely fascinating book about a condition that has been a problem for most of my life. I have long felt that migraines almost had to be genetic, and here is proof. I have confirmed four generations, from my maternal grandmother to my mother, to myself and one of my daughters, who have all experienced these debilitating headaches. Very honestly, I would never wish this kind of pain on my worst enemy. It's just not a fun way to spend time.

From the Publisher

Hunger Of Memory is the story of a Mexican-American Richard Rodriguez, who begins his schooling in Sacramento, California, knowing just 50 words of English and concludes his university studies in the stately quiet of the reading room of the British Museum. Here is the poignant journey is a "minority student" who pays the cost of his social assimilation and academic success with a painful alienation -- from his past, his parents, his culture -- and so describes the high price of "making it" in middle class America. Provocative in its positions on affirmative action and bilingual education, Hunger Of Memory is a powerful political statement, a profound study of the importance of language... and the moving, intimate portrait of a boy struggling to become a man. "Arresting...Splendidly written intellectual autobiography." -- Boston Globe "Superb autobiographical essay... Mr. Rodriguez offers himself as an example if the long labor of change: its costs, about which he is movingly frank, its loneliness, but also its triumph." -- The New York Times Book Review

When I started this book, I was not expecting him to take the stance that he takes on bilingual education. Richard has some very unique and valuable personal insights into the matter, as well as the beginnings of affirmative action in the education system. His writing style is vulnerable and honest, making it easy to find yourself sympathizing with him as he tells his story.

This book is very enlightening! I gained great insight into Richard Rodriguez’s background.

Great book, I am Mexican American and had to read this in college for an English class. Rodriguez is a very opinionated person and there may be things you don't agree with him, but over time throughout my college life I began to see his points, which I will spare the details. I recommend you read it because it gives a view on language barriers between Mexican Americans and white Americans here in the U.S as well as other topics that you may come across in classes in college and its a great reference to go back to.

I read this as part of a book discussion group. I can't say that I agreed totally with his observations, but was mpressed by the clarity of his arguments and the elegance o fhis writing.

I disagreed with him in some ways, however his book really made me think. I think about it a lot still, and I read it over 4 months ago. Very powerful book.

They say that English is one of the hardest languages to learn. However, it is much harder to navigate the language of culture, which Richard Rodriguez mastered well. Rodriguez's story plays out the same as way many second-generation Americans; he begins his educational career in parochial school, where he only knows 50 words of English. He is forced by Nuns to assimilate to American culture and learn the language, in doing so he leave some of his own Hispanic upbringing behind. His parents feel the pressure by Nuns as well, who insist that the Rodriguez's speak English at home. Rodriguez succeeds in school, goes to Stanford University, and begins a teaching career. He doesn't make himself visible in the Chicano studies program nor is he a supporter of Affirmative Action, which he feels designates persons of color as needing preferential treatment because they can't compete because of their race. Throughout his life he struggles to master remaining true to his roots, but understanding how his education leaves him out of touch from other Hispanics who never had the breaks Rodriguez had. As a first-generation college graduate I can relate to the struggles Rodriquez experienced, walking the line of relevancy of where you came from to realizing how distant you are from it. This book was an okay read, but left me wanting more.

*Hunger of Memory* was an ok read. There was nothing unforgettable in the book. So, that left me somewhat disappointed. Rodriguez provided his personal accounts on some topics, such as assimilation, language, bi-bi education, Catholicism, affirmative action, etc.I enjoyed reading about his views and experiences with assimilating with American values and whatnots. For those of us who are minorities, I believe that we can relate to that. His personal accounts kind of became reminders of my childhood and helped me re-evaluate how I was assimilated. The other thing I enjoyed reading was about his college education and "moving up" as a minority in regards to scholarships and job offers. As a minority, you never really know if you're being sought after due to your minority status or your expertise/specialty. Rodriguez was honest about his feelings and views on such things. His portrayal of his mother reminded me so much of my mother. I had to laugh and groan in memory. It is interesting to see how he portrays a separation between him and his family due to his being an academician. It as if his family expect him to know everything because he's educated. Yet, when he gives answers, those answers are "over the top" for them. They just dismiss him and move on. At the same time, they still encourage him for further achievements...as long as he leaves out the family because it is a private matter. What I didn't like about the book was that he droned on and on about language (Spanish & English). I'm guess I was bored with this as I had just finished reading *Breaking Through* and *Growing Up Latino*. Both of these books mentioned this. I realize it is a common experience by Hispanics in regards to Spanish and English. But in Rodriguez, he dwells on language forever.Overall, I have mixed feelings about this book. I liked half of it and hated the other half. It was like he wrote about himself but at the same time, he didn't. This book was more of his views on things rather than getting to know him.

Just as Mr. Rodriguez, I went to a Christian private school where I was the only Latina. I am a second generation Mexican-American who disagrees with Mr. Rodriguez opinions and feelings. He can’t seem to relate to anyone who is Mexican, even his own siblings who went through a similar education and upbringing. He explains several times that he is ashamed of his parents for having little education. He eventually stopped speaking Spanish and distanced himself from his family. He’s ashamed of his skin tone and his roots. The message I got from this book is that Education=Anglo Saxon and uneducated=minority. This book is sending a toxic message about internalized racism. He’s a self hating Latino but still so far up his ass about his new socio economic status and higher education.

The story is filled with African cultural information that engages members of my Reading Club in productive discussions. Having little knowledge of Africa, they are learning through this medium cultural information that they can relate to some common practices they have experienced in their everyday lives. The humor of the book keeps readers looking for the next minutes. The book is morally strong and provides good examples of integrity, character, selflessness, and a range of other modes of behavior that children of this generation rarely consider. I will be looking for the next book in a few weeks.

Mma Ramotswe, "the accomplished founder of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" has agreed to marry "Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, proprietor of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors", but first there is business to be conducted and mysteries to be solved. Specifically, where is the couple going to live? In Mr J.L.B. Matekoni's house or in Mma Ramotswe's clean cottage? Mma Ramotswe is going to take care of Mr J.L.B Matekoni. Just listen to her tell his maid "A man who is well looked-after becomes fatter. They are just like cattle That is well-known." And what about an engagement ring with a large diamond? First, though, there are the cases Mma Ramotswe has to solve - an American student, missing for ten years from an experimental collective. The mother accepts that he might be dead, but wants to know why. Then there is the butcher with a wife who has suddenly enough money to send the son to an expensive private school. The orphanage just outside the city needs help with the troublesome pump and before he knows it, Mr J.L.B. Matekoni is charged with the care of two orphans without consulting Mma Ramotswe first, Oh, and the promotion of her assistant and .... there is so much information packed into these books. I love McCall Smith's language, descriptions of the country and it's people! The relentless heat comes off the page when reading the description of cars parked so that the least bit of shade wards off the sun, or the Commissioner's Land Rover entrusted to Mr J.L.B. Matekoni, or the university lecturer. Wonderful series!

Alexander McCall Smith never disappoints and "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" is gift that just keeps on giving. I love what I am learning about Africa and the African people. AMS, obviously, loves Africa and its people, especially Botswana. I'd love to sit with Mma Precious Ramotswe and share some Bush tea, some good conversation. She is wise and compassionate. I have a long way to go in the series but that is okay. This means that I can enjoy some good company for quite a while. I would like to invite Alexander McCall Smith to have Bush tea with us too and some fruit cake. The conversation would be so entertaining.I just saw a talk by Alexander McCall Smith at the Washington Library. It took place when Bush was in office. He spoke about "No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" at length and he took questions. I could listen to this man speak forever. I love his speaking voice and I love his laugh. He has a great laugh. I like a good laugh and he has a really good laugh. He is so cute and he has a great sense of humor. I would love to see him in person. I have so many questions for him. I have to look at his schedule to see when he will be in NYC. I'd like to see him. I don't know where this man gets the time to write all of these books, travel and teach at the University too. I am amazed by his energy.

I DO love 'The Number 1 Ladies' Detective Agency Series' by Alexander McCall Smith. While the author is 'white' (and so am I), his stories show a deep love for Africa and an appreciation for the dignity of ins indigenous people. Well...at least the people of Botswana. I recommend starting with this book since it is the first in the series. It is also as fine a beginning as any series could hope to be. We find the heroine reflecting on her life as a young girl in a British Colonial milieu and we see her in adult life as the intelligent and practical product of a prosperous father and a good high school education. We find her to be independent-natured, self-sufficient and willing and able to stand up for independent women anywhere. She starts her own business...and since she admires Agatha Christie, she decides to become a detective. Each of these books picks up and drops a single overall case, separating each phase of its solution with chapters dealing mostly with other cases that can be solved more quickly. Each case requires some ingenious thinking and a deep understanding of local culture and practices and, of course, of basic human nature. In spite of having to deal with darker events such as kidnapping, witchcraft, impersonation, philandering, insurance fraud and employee theft, there is something life-affirming about the heroine's approach to each case and in the way she stays 'centered' as a human being. Readers looking for a 'cozy' mystery series that is not set in England will very much enjoy this series!

I am a medical school classmate of Dick's and although we have kept up over the years, I must admit to surprise at aspects his/her life I never knew about, and especially what a good write she is. I highly recommend this book of readable unusual stories. There are easy reading chapters highlighting adventures of the young Dick Raskind and moving up to current times as Renee Richards. Interesting vignettes of tennis notables - Bobby Riggs, BillyJean King, Marina Navratilova among others - and Renee's further experiences over the years with tennis elite from her point of view. Finally some insight into her own struggles to make a difference in the world of professional tennis.

As a longtime email correspondent with the author, I was privy to this story and the others, enjoying them immensely. She is such a good short story writer I suggested she collect them into a book and publish them. I was sure they were worth a read as Dr. Richards has a way with words and is a gifted story teller. Not only that, but her stories were often about subjects not covered in her two autobiographies, Second Serve and No Way Renée, Many of her friends are famous athletes and she has met important and famous persons in her varied and active life. She knew Bobby Riggs and Billy Jean King and coached Martina Navratilova. Her lawyer who won the case for her playing on the professional circuit as a woman was the same who defended Ruby who famously shot and killed Oswald, the man who assassinated Jack Kennedy.Dr. Richard's life included friendships with the top people in various professions. The short stories include Spynight, the story of an amazing summer camp and vignettes from her Navy career as a man, as well as stories about some of her famous patients, one of whom, Keith Olbermann, had interesting things to say about her in his introduction. Tennis star Mary Carillo also had a penetrating anecdote at the beginning. Having read most of these stories before, I highly recommend the recent collection. I predict Spynight will become a great movie!

Dr. Richards is an excellent writer, who writes in a very entertaining and thoughtful way, with a style that is fluid and easy to read. The stories are exception, I high recommend it!

Lawrence H. Mark also went to same Summer Camp and experienced "Spy Night". He thoroughly enjoyed the memories.

This is a delightful, light but at the same time serious book. Delightful in that the main story, Spy Night, reconstructs an age of innocence at a Connecticut summer boy's camp, light because it is fast and enjoyable, and serious because of the undercurrent of WWII -- what it was like growing up Jewish American during WWII. The human impact is strong. Dr. Richards is a talented author. Her other stories about the medical profession are full of insight, compassion and humor. FIVE STARS.

I enjoyed Keith Olbermann's introduction and Mary Carillo's vignette. Spynight was fascinating, about a great and unique summer camp. Some of the campers grew up to be famous and accomplished. Dickie was excited to be away from home for the first time, instead of terrified. Camp was a perfect blend of Nature, Freedom and Responsibility. I recommend this collection highly, easy reading and a sure fire page turner!

Captivating stories that entertain as they reveal a character of tremendous integrity and strength of purpose. A good read all by itself. There is no need to know much about the author beforehand. Relevant information is in the book.
