Recognized by the New York Times for his work, editor John Willingham has spent seven years researching and writing about public university honors programs. This is his fourth book on the subject. He is also the founder, in 2011, of the website PublicUniversityHonors.com. He has a BA with Honors and an MA from the University of Texas at Austin, where his graduate minors were in education and journalism. Two years ago, I began my journey to help my high achievement son find colleges that were a good fit for him and personal enough to challenge him and help him grow as a person. In the early 1960’s, while attending the University of Dayton, I was a civilian employee of the United States Air Force at wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, and lived in a house trailer across the highway from Area “B” (Aeronautical Systems Division, old Wright Field and home of the famous “Building 18”), when the Air Force Museum was in Fairborn and not in the middle of Area “B” and frequent SAC alerts rattled the trailer with B-52s and KC135s leaving the runway in Area “C” every 15 or 20 seconds. Those were the days of Major Donald Keyhoe and NICAP, Cpt. Edward J. Ruppelt and Project Bluebook, and the UFO flap of the late 50s and early 60s, and I was living at the epicenter of it all. I got hooked on the UFO phenomena then and wanted answers, even though my security clearance wouldn’t even get me a haircut in the base barber shop, and I have been hooked on it ever since.Since those days I have read quite a number of books on the subject and I don’t know a whole lot more than I did back then. I don’t know what UFOs are, where they originate, or what they are doing here, but I damn sure want to know before they pat me in the face with a long handle shovel.Most of the books I’ve read on UFOs start with the premise that UFOs are extraterrestrial spacecraft and then go about presenting cases that the author says can’t be explained otherwise. Leslie Kean’s book is different, and stands out from all the others, in that it takes an agnostic approach to the subject. As an investigative reporter she doesn’t even know if there is such a thing, and sets out to find out.I became familiar with Ms. Kean through her appearances on the History Channel and the old H2 Channel. She impressed me, and when I saw that she had written this book I bought it.Ms. Kean starts out completely neutral on the subject and only on the premise that there is something happening in our atmosphere that astronomers, military and commercial pilots, and average people on the ground have been seeing for years, and that is picked up routinely by commercial and military radar. She then goes on to establish and document proof that this is truly the case, before pursuing the question of what’s being seen.The title of the book is “UFOs - Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials Go on the Record”, so I’m thinking WOW, she has a bunch of Major Donald Keyhoes, Dr. James McDonalds, Senators, Congressmen, Governors and the like, finally coming clean on UFOs. She does, but alas, they are not United States officials (dream on Sailorman) at least most of them. She does however present some pretty impressive information from files released from countries like France, Belgium, Brazil, United Kingdom and many other countries that are more open, public, and official about their investigation of the UFO phenomena, and in reporting their findings. She also reproduces interviews with many of these foreign commercial and military pilots, government officials, UFO investigators, professors, etc., many of whom are now retired.While I still didn’t get my answers to what UFOs are, where they originate, or what they are doing here, I did learn that a lot of other countries take this phenomena very seriously, consider it a national defense and/or public air safety issue, and have set up and still operate official government agencies to study and try to understand it. Also, that the United States does too, but keeps it all secret (DUH, among one heck of a lot of other things) and are less than cooperative with other countries openly studying it.This is certainly not you run-of-the-mill UFO book. It’s an easy read, full of new information, well documented, and well worth its price and the time it takes to read it. Buy it, read it, and enjoy it. You’ll learn a few surprising things; at least I did.

However I end up deciding to regard the information in this book, it will rank as one of the most enjoyable I've ever read. The accounts and historical record that Leslie Kean has compiled in this book are beyond astonishing; it is at times impossible to put down. I read this book after the December 2017 article in the New York Times was published ('Glowing Auras and Black Money'). Coming from that article, I found the information at first intriguing, and as I read further, revelationary. What she has succeeded in doing with this book is placing a perfectly fitting puzzle piece into the center of the rumor, witness, and innuendo of the subject as I've known it during my life. It was a shock for me to learn that major global powers have acknowledged and documented the existence of UFOs or UAPs, with the U.S. being the notable exception.What the puzzle looks like when finished is still in question for me. There are several things that are hard to ignore after finishing the book, such as: a society and government now armed to the teeth in high resolution cameras and surveillance, not just among top-secret organizations but private enterprise, commercial airline, drones, etc., has yet to produce any truly compelling photographic evidence of these phenomena (with the possible exception of the previously mentioned article). Each time I would read a stunning account from a pilot, airline employee, or military personnel, part of the reveal would be the same dingy, blurry photos that have always existed and show next to nothing, or crude sketches on notepads. This does not dismiss the independently corroborated testimonies and radar confirmations, which remain very interesting, but for me seems a glaring omission. It would seem logical to assume that by these thousands of accounts, independently corroborated by equipment and persons, today we should at least have several more compelling cases that also include civilians taking out their phones to record. As far as I know we do not. When early in the book the author partially dismissed this due to the awe inspired by witnessing such an event, to the extent that people seem to never remember to take a picture, I found that pretty hard to believe. At this point it is instinctual.Nevertheless, the continuity, reputability, and similarities of many accounts included in this book are fascinating, and at very least tons of fun to think and wonder about.

I'm a 42-year-old, self-employed single guy who has always dreamed of owning and living full-time in an RV. I've always pictured it as something I'd do in the distant future (retirement, etc.), but lately I've been thinking, why put off until tomorrow what I can do today?I purchased this book as one of my first steps in turning this dream into a reality, and it turned out to be just the kind of helpful, practical, and inspiring beginner's guide that I'd hoped it would be. The writing style is simple and conversational, almost like you're texting back and forth with a good friend. This makes it a very quick and easy read that is also packed full with lots of substantive information and fun, useful tips.I would have liked a more detailed, step-by-step guide to filling and emptying the RV's water and waste tanks, hooking everything up at RV parks, etc. But otherwise this was a very entertaining and educational read that will no doubt continue to serve as a handy guide for many months and years to come.

I am going into RVing full time with little to no knowledge on the subject but am feeling almost completely prepared after having read this book. She really covers all the bases with this one, it's so worth the money even if you're just curious about the lifestyle. Informational books are pretty difficult for me to get through usually but this one presents the information in an entertaining way, read the whole thing in less than two weeks.

I'm not really a beginner. I've been buying and living in camping trailers for about 40 years. Pop-ups, truck campers, trailers, and -- for the last 15 or so -- motorhomes. I spend time on forums trying to help people with questions, but will now just send them a link to Alyssa's book. She's managed to cover just about every single major question I get asked. (And yes, "How do you get your mail?" is #1.) I usually tell people mail is brought to my rig by squirrels, and walk quietly away. We live in a 35' motorhome full time, and work as camp hosts -- so we're always getting questions about the life.It's really neat to see someone addressing the constant questions and standing up to say "This is the answer." Most books like this just list off a series of possibilities, and confuse the reader even more. I like that it is written with spirit and a youthful flair -- seeing "smh" in the first few pages told me that this wasn't going to be a dry and boring read. I'd recommend this book for both newbies and us oldbies -- there's lots here I didn't know, and several things that gave me a new perspective. Very nice job for a first outing.

I have to admit that while we were contemplating making the leap to full-time RV life, I spent most of my time saving RV pins on Pinterest or mooning over fabulous Instagram photos, leaving my husband to deal with most of the actual research.If this book had come out a year ago, I might've quit dreaming and started learning. Still, it's valuable insight I'm glad the author shared. We did get an RV, but haven't yet graduated to full-time life (soon, though!!!). I learned a lot from the book, and it was an enjoyable read.Unlike most of the RV books hubby bought :DThe author is knowledgeable, experienced, sassy, opinionated and at times pretty damn funny. This makes what might otherwise be a fairly mundane topic a pleasure to read.I dinged my rating by a star because of minor editing lapses near the end, and because she presents a few of her preferences as fact rather than a choice based on ones circumstances. But it's such a great guide for newbs like me that I wish Amazon would let me give it 4.5 stars.

I LOVE Alyssa Padgett's comprehensive and entertaining way of explaining all the variables of RV life. She's really knowledgeable about everything from purchasing an RV, maintenance, and even community on the road. She's funny too! This isn't just a dry read of facts; she's a great story teller and captures your imagination of what's possible living in an RV, touring the country, and embracing adventure!

Hard to believe the writer is an architect. Terrible, bad designs. A waste of money.

She also explains why she has chosen leather as the medium of focus. She says, "You can easily shape, stamp, cut, dye, paint, and sew it into anything, which is especially good for crafting."She notes that templates are included in the book so that the reader will easily be able to jump right in.She finishes the introduction by saying, "Whether you are a beginner or advanced, I hope to introduce methods that will spark your creativity and take your jewelry making to the next level."Which is exactly what she does!In the "basics" section she discusses tools, techniques, materials, and even the inspiration the reader might need. Delightfully, the author then adds that "the key is to have fun and let your creativity take over."Colored, dyed cowhide in different weights is one thing the reader will be looking for. If you are Vegan, choose to go for Vegan options, which are available. Another material which is mentioned and which will make an appearance in this book is feathers (there is a fantastic bead, leather and feather necklace to look forward to, for example).Some of the tools which jewelry designers may or may not already have are: a rotary hole punch, a cutting mat, cutting knives and leather glue. The remaining tools and the components are items which most designers probably already have.In this basics section the author then demonstrates how to use a cutting blade, hole punching, opening and closing jump rings, making loops on a head pin, and more. Everything is photographed beautifully, in striking brilliant colors. The final technique you will learn is how to cap feathers for jewelry use. This was new to this reviewer and I really loved it.The main body of the book comes next, along with templates. It is nicely planned out, with book flaps at the beginning and the end, so you can keep your place.The first project is Geometric Cutout Earrings. These are gorgeously colored leather earrings, cut out by hand, with three shapes per earring, each attached with jump rings. Really easy, really hip, and really pretty.Project number two is one of my absolute favorites. It is very similar to the first project however small embellishments of hand cut out leather are added to the bottom. These are perfect: bold yet beautiful!Following this comes a tutorial on how to make leather tassel earrings, and after that the reader will be introduced to the "Geometric Fringe Leather Earrings". These have so much going for them, they are ballistic. The description says, "Combine a fun fringed look with geometric cutout elements. Use the tassel technique and cut out a geometric lattice to hang in front of the fringe." The colors of the leather, combined with the great shapes, make these fascinating and fabulous!The reader will see this sort of inventiveness continue on throughout the book. The leathers used in each project will be offered in numerous color choices, such as orange, hot pink and turquoise, purple, yellow and lime green, and turquoise, indigo and orange, all for the same project. This collection of choices for each project helps inspire the reader to really get her creativity flowing.Later on in the book, metallic leather makes an appearance (as it does on the cover). The "Geometric Tassel Necklace" comes in three color offerings and it is a wow of a project. As the author says, "Create a layered geometric necklace with tassels. A touch of metallic leather can make any design have a high-end look. I like to use multiple shades of the same color on the tassels for added "pop".The designer's Leather Circle necklace and the variation, the Leather Geometric necklace, demonstrate even further how flat out amazing and artistic she is in her choices of color and shape.It is like studying with a great teacher, when you create a piece with Christina Anton by your side, using her book, Creative Leather Jewelry.You will not only learn how to work with leather, you will learn another way of understanding the beauty which is always a part of art.Creative Leather Jewelry, 21 Stylish Projects that Make a Statement, by Christina Anton is a unique and lovely book which all jewelry designers should own!
