In May of 1943, at the New York Supreme Court, former Watchtower attorney Olin Moyle, successfully sued The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society for slander. While under oath, the then President of the WTBTS, Nathan Knorr, testified that the JW magazine (The Watchtower) is presented to the public as "God's Word...without qualification." (Court Transcript, Moyle vs. WTBTS, p.1474) In the same case, Frederick Franz, who succeeded Knorr as President of the WTBTS, testified that "Jehovah God" was the Editor of the Watchtower magazine "since its inception." (Court Transcript, pp.795, 866)In addition, The Watchtower magazine claims to be the ONLY channel through which God communicates His truth to the world. (WT, 4/1/1919, p.6414; WT, 1/15/1917, p.6033) Emphasizing that it does not interpret what God's truth is, but merely puts in writing the truth that God delivers to the world through them, and only them! (WT, 1 July, 1943, p.203; WT11/1/1931, p.327; WT, 1/1/ 1994, p.6) Fortunately, God gives us a few tests to apply to anyone making claims as radical as the WTBTS and The Watchtower magazine.Deuteronomy 18:20-22 and 13:1-4 give two tests for distinguishing between genuine Prophets of God and False Prophets. (1) If one prophesies in God's name and what they predict does not come to pass - they are a False Prophet. (2) If they're prediction does come to pass, BUT they teach you to follow after false gods - they are a False Prophet. Thus, recognizing False Prophets is achieved by simply applying these tests to the teachings ans prophecies of the WTBTS.Tragically, everything they have ever predicted has FAILED to come to pass. "Judge" Rutherford (2nd leader of WTBTS) wrote a booklet in 1920 entitled "Millions Now Living Will Never Die." On pp.89-90 Rutherford predicted that in 1925 Old Testament Saints and those listed in the New Testament book of Hebrews chapter 11 would return bodily to live once again on the earth to rule over the New Kingdom of God they would inaugerate, stating, "...Therefore we may confidently expect that 1925 will mark the return of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the faithful prophets of old, particularly those named by the Apostle in Hebrews chapter eleven, to the condition of human perfection." Needless to say, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are still dead and did not return in 1925."Judge" Rutherford taught that in 1914, 1918, and 1925 all governments of the world would be removed and God's Kingdom would replace them as the governing body. (Studies in the Scriptures, Vol.2, early editions, pp.76-78; 98-99; Studies in the Scriptures, Vol.7. p.62; WT, 7/15/1924, p.211)When each year came and went without fulfilling Rutherford's prediction, he had the temerity to write in his book "Vindication" that "God's faithful people" (NOT Rutherford himself) made false predictions that did not come true, stating, "God's faithful people on the earth emphasized the importance of the dates 1914 and 1918 and 1925. They had much to say about these dates and what would come to pass, BUT ALL THEY PREDICTED DID NOT COME TO PASS." (Vindication, Vol.1, p.146) Furthermore, in his book "Light," he wrote that making false predictions is proof positive that someone is a FALSE PROPHET, Rutherford stating, "...their prophecies to date have not come to pass; and that alone is strong evidence that they are false prophets." (Light, Vol.2, p.47) However, regarding all the previous false predictions he made in the official publications of the WTBTS, Rutherford conspicuously failed to apply this standard to himself! Such egregious false predictions, followed by equally egregious cover-ups, rewritings of history, ans misleading statements are common throughout the writings published by the WTBTS. Their entire history is characterized by one false prediction after another.In addition, doctrines taught by WTBTS leaders as truth received from God, is contradicted by later leaders. Even though every leader involved claims to merely relay truth received from God. For instance, the founder of the Jehovah's Witnesses, Charles Taze Russell, taught for years that the Great Pyramid in Gizeh was designed, engineered, and supervised by God in its construction. In addition, he claimed that by deciphering its dimensions and passage-ways, one could unlock deep secret doctrines taught in the Bible. So much so that Russell called the Great Pyramid in Gizeh "The Bible in Stone." (WT, 3/15/1911, p.4790) In direct contradiction to Russell, the next JW leader, "Judge" Rutherford, taught that the Great Pyramid in Gizeh was not from God but instead was directly designed by Satan himself saying it was Satan's Bible, and not God's stone witness." In the same article, after some detailed explanation of some the Pyramid's dimensions, Rutherford states that, "If the above calculations are correct, then such is further corroborative proof that the Devil himself superintended the building of the pyramid if Gizeh." (WT, Nov.15, 1928, p.344)Given the events above, it is abundantly clear that the Jehovah's Witnesses organization (WTBTS) is not the ONLY CHANNEL of truth used by God to communicate to the world. In reality, it is a FALSE PROPHET. The quotes concern both false prophecies by the Watchtower and its reversals on many of its doctrines through the years.My favorite example of how the Watchtower has reversed itself of it teachings is on page 116:The men of Sodom will be resurrected. WT 7/1879, p.8The men of Sodom will not be resurrected. WT 6/1/1952, p. 479.The men of Sodom will be resurrected. WT 8/1/1965, p. 479The men of Sodom will not be resurrected. WT 6/1/1988, p.31.The men of Sodom will be resurrected. "Live Forever," earlier editions, p.179.The men of Sodom will not be resurrected. "Live Forever," later editions, p.179.The men of Sodom will be resurrected. "Insight, Vol.2, p. 985.The men of Sodom will not be resurrected. "Revelation," p. 273.It's interesting to note that the last two books were both published in the same year, 1988. And this is not a minor issue as whether the Sodomites will be resurrected or not has a bearing on whether a JW's departed, non-JW loved ones will be resurrected or not.Since the Watchtower claims to be "God's Channel of Communication" and a "Prophet" as Reed documents in this book, these false prophecies and reversals on doctrines are very damaging to the Watchtower. If the Watchtower was truly what it claimed to be it should infallible. But these quotes clearly show that it is not.In addition, it is very sad that many JWs have struggled extensively due to some doctrines that were later changed. For instance, the teaching that vaccinations were wrong forced many JWs to find creative ways to get around their schools' requirement that their children be vaccinated. But since the Watchtower has now rescinded this directive, this means previous generations of JWs suffered needlessly. Could the same happen in regards to blood transfusions in the future?However, JWs are conditioned by the Watchtower not to view anything that appears critical of the Watchtower. So to get a JW to actually consider the information in this book, one would have to attain the cited books themselves or write out the quotes and their sources on a separate sheet of paper and give that to the JW.Also, pointing out the false prophecies and reversals of doctrines of the Watchtower is only one way to deal with JWs. Another way is to address the doctrines of the Watchtower. And Reed has other books that look at what the Scriptures have to say about Watchtower teachings. And there are three chapters on the Trinity and one on various other Watchtower teachings in my book "Scripture Workbook: For Personal Bible Study and Teaching the Bible."So get this book by Reed to prepare yourself to address this area of the Watchtower, and get one of Reed's other books or my "Scripture Workbook" to prepare yourself for Biblical discussions.

The New Union Haggadah is the first official Reform order for the Passover meal in several years, and as such, it hits the saturated market with all the expected fanfare.Haggadot are as plenty and diverse as there are people who use them, and if you can't find one you like, you can always make your own. So what makes this particular Haggadah worth a purchase? Let's dive in and take a look-see.Just the facts, please:This Haggadah is designed for contemplation of, and use during, the Passover season. In addition to a complete order for the Passover meal (called a Seder), the volume also includes essays designed to explore the festival's key themes from a Reform Jewish perspective. The text of the meal itself was crafted in part by leadership from the Reform movement's "Classical" sub-set, the Society for Classical Reform Judaism, which - among other things - advocates praying in a language easily comprehended by the individual (usually English). As a result, this book is primarily an English one, with occasional Hebrew blessings and prayers at key moments throughout.Presentation:While the measurements of the book are compact (it's small, and easily held in the hand), the glossy hardcover finish is attractive and elegant. Inside, texts are often accented by religious imagery in woodcut or stained glass -style artwork. I found the print is large enough to be accessible, though your own mileage may vary based on your particular visual strength. The order of the meal is easy to follow, with readings laid out in such a way as to make it simple for every participant to decide which sections they wish to read. Customizing an evening Seder can therefore be done with little fuss.Content:This is a Reform Haggadah that explicitly celebrates the history and heritage of the Classical Reform way of life. The English readings, which constitute the majority of the book, are stately and (I say this with all due respect) almost Catholic Mass-like in their formality. If you've ever prayed with an older Reform prayerbook, like Gates of Prayer, you have a sense of what I mean. That's not to say there is an over-reliance on King James-style "thees" and "thous," only that the Haggadah may feel a bit more somber than some of the texts available today. Furthermore, this formality is actually a principle draw of this particular text, as it calls attention to the kind of elegant language that once defined all expressions of Reform worship. As for the essays - they offer quick, thoughtful reads by Reform scholars, making the Haggadah an excellent tool for Passover teaching, in addition to worship. While none of the essays is particularly Earth-shattering in its insight, all present themselves concisely and intelligently, with relevant themes to contemplate before and after your Seder. Lastly, while the book is decidedly Reform, it would make an excellent tool for an interfaith or first-time Seder, without sacrificing much (if any) of what all Jewish movements share during the Passover season. In other words, even those who don't "tow the party line" toward Reform may find something to love here.Conclusion:The New Union Haggadah isn't going to be for everyone. Those with an aversion to English-heavy prayer will find the large absence of Hebrew to be distracting, and those who are averse to formal language will likely turn to another Haggadah for something a bit friendlier. However, the book offers much to love, even for those who don't see themselves as Reform Jews. The presentation is simple and classy, the book itself is durable and will likely last a long time, and as a Reform work, it does wonders in speaking to the vibrancy of the Classical Reform philosophy.No major qualms here; this is one for your library.

Beautiful text, but I wish the illustrations were more colorful and the book was larger. The previous (1974) version appealed more to children. However, the text is better than the half dozen alternatives I reviewed and it is gender neutral which I like.

This haggadah is beautiful in every way. Its message is the hope of peace FOR ALL PEOPLE. A compact hardcover volume (easy for cleanup and durability), its colorful images uplift and inspire. The language is new, but the meaning is timeless. It is primarily in English, accessible for all who might attend the seder. But its intention is undeniably Jewish: with the universal promise of oneness of all humanity.The volume also contains excellent essays on the history of Passover and its celebration that will enlighten the mind of the seder leader, and all who choose to read them. The seder is very user-friendly: setting out a template for an evening that can be brief, but leaving plenty of room for elaboration, conversation, and questions for those planning to spend the night. A wonderful resource to teach families (with great hymns included), this haggadah's additional strength is that is well-suited for adults, whether knowledgeable about Judaism or new to the seder. In its brevity, the New Union Haggadah won't go over the heads of some nor will it leave Passover veterans bored and underwhelmed.This is the haggadah my family will be using for many years to come.

I love this Haggadah more than any other have used over the years. As another reviewer mentioned, the book itself is elegant in its feel and presentation. The woodcuts and full color stained glass images are beautiful and add interest. The page layout makes the text easy to read. You aren't overwhelmed with explanations and commentaries, yet nothing for me is compromised. Quite the contrary, the essence of the Classical Reform universal message of Passover is powerfully conveyed in language that is moving and accessible to all. Non-Jewish guests and family members can easily follow and participate in the Seder that is primarily in English. The Hebrew passages include transliterations and well as translations, so no one feels lost or left out.I also appreciate the updated text. It is not only gender neutral, but also includes new rituals that have become standard at many family Seders. One that I particularly appreciate is the inclusion of the orange on the Seder plate. It represents the equality of women in spiritual leadership roles, including rabbis, and the celebration of diversity and inclusion of everyone sitting around our table.I've used this Haggadah since it was first published. I appreciate it more and more each year.

Everything is in English yet the prayers are there in Hebrew and transliteration for those who want to use it that way. Stunning new illustrations add to the beauty of the book while evoking the feel of the original.This haggadah is easy to hold and to use, both the service itself and the explanatory sections. Plenty of songs both traditional and contemporary are included.The selection of essays at the end about Exodus, the haggadah and Reform Judaism are insightful any time of year.This New Union Haggadah enhances both congregational and home seders. Having tested it at home last year, I am looking forward to using it this year in an interfaith seder.

An elegant book filled with the basics of 'how we do it' to exploring and sharing new and exciting ways of writing Pysanky and creating art eggs. The author is a most impressive teacher and artist and her love for Pysanky jumps off of every page. This book is a lovely addition to the library of the experienced writer/artist, and a must-have for the beginner or fan.

This book is loaded with truly exceptionally beautiful designs and ideas, but it is not for the Pysanky beginner. It should be used by - and will benefit - someone who already has a lot of practice in the basics of kistka wax applications and very fine-line drawing. For the experienced Pysanky maker, this book should be on their reading and idea-creating list.

This little book is a must have for any beginner when it comes to decorating Eggs. My head is just full of ideas now.

Beautiful eggs that I have not seen before. This book holds so many different design styles, from Japanese Stencil, Cross Stick lace, patchwork quilts to freestyle art!!! The book not only inspires with examples, but also teaches - how to dye, draw with melted wax and redye the eggs, step by step. I have checked my library's copy out every year for 8 years, and bought a copy to get my brother's family started.Pysanki eggs are great for Easter and also as Christmas ornaments. Examples from the book, team/school logos, flags and quilting patterns work very well as subjects for your eggs, until you start getting ideas of your own.
