The Michelin guide company does a great job most of the time and has always treated me well when going to a new place. This was the first Green book I have bought, and was a bit disappointed. I found the Ideas of activities and the descriptions of areas to be surface level. Directions and locations were not clear and the things that were interesting I could not find. The Red books put out by Michelin are wonderful and I will still use them any time I am traveling to a place they have one for. I will pass on Green books from here on out.

Great guide with 100 pages on Seoul and 15 on Busan. Highly recommended.

With others I agree the Kindle edition does this otherwise fine book a disservice. Too many illustrations from the printed edition are absent in the Kindle edition, replaced with "Illustration deleted. To view this illustration, please refer to the print edition of this book."I fault Amazon for two reasons: (1) omitting the illustrations, and (2) failing to alert prospective buyers of their omission. I consider the second fault worse than the first.If I were able to ask for a refund I would.

As someone who is intoxicated with 18th century southern and tidewater architecture and building practices, I can't praise this highly enough. Most "old house" (to use a slang term) books focus on exteriors - surfaces - decor, with occasionally a cross section of a door jamb or window sash thrown in. Much good work has of course been done on classical design, the orders, and how this has come down to us as the common interior and exterior mouldings seen in the "polite house" of this period. But as far as a real anatomical dissection, down to the gristle, of the building practices of the men who built these houses, you had to go begging with your hat in your hand. There are scraps here and there, as much as the intended readership would bear but no more, in books by housewright and woodworker Roy Underhill and timber framer Jack Sobon; "Get Your House Right" is the best there is on architecture and tasteful design of these houses without going into construction details, and the White Pine Series can be assembled if you want to put on your 5 power magnification goggles and squint at the beautiful tiny scale architectural drawings. So much emphasis has been placed on New England one would think there were no great houses anywhere else. (Yankees!) But here in massive, heavy glory is almost anything one could hope to know about the domestic buildings that we commonly associate with Colonial Williamsburg but in fact typified an entire culture, not just the miracle mile there in "the 'burg".Indepth work on not only the what and the how but also the WHY is what sets this apart. They don't just show one cross section of sash muntin to show that in the 18th century they were thicker and deeper than in the 19th, the authors give us cross sections of 10 or more muntins, from different houses and different periods. I've never seen so many bannisters before. Paint in all its shades and meanings. How they put the brass rim locks in a house so that you would see them as you moved through it. Also how people lived in the houses - the way they laid out their posessions - the rhythm of their lives.Worth twice the price. "Grab it and growl", as we say. It'll probably go out of print and the price will achieve fair market value.

If you're like me, you'll think of William Paca's grand Annapolis townhouse, or perhaps George Wythe's equally grand Williamsburg townhouse. Or perhaps you'll be reminded of Shirley Plantation or more modest but equally beautiful Smith's Fort.If this sounds like you, you have a fondness for houses of the Chesapeake region, a vast area with a wealth of historic architecture tied together by a common historic, economic and cultural identity.This book is dedicated to capturing the building art of the region. By using the term "art," I mean exactly that. The book is not an architectural catalog, but is a descriptive guide to the arts and crafts employed by architects and artisans in the design and construction of these magnificent and beautiful structures.The houses featured herein were designed and built when a house served a profoundly different function than it does today. They were not only places of domicile, but also expression of a common culture and agricultural ideal. These houses, regardless of size or age, were meant to make a statement. They were also meant to make money, from the cash crops of the day. These very characteristics allow the authors to group what may otherwise be considered different styles into a common whole - the Chesapeake House.The houses featured in the book were all built before 1850 because the authors note that regional distinction in style had essentially disappeared by then. Houses built in the 1850s in Virginia looked a lot like houses built in the 1850s in Wisconsin, or California, etc...So here we have a book divided into chapters, roughly, by cultural theme (in the first half of the book) and trade (in the second half). The Design Process, Plantation Housing, Outbuildings, Woodwork, windows, doors, hardware, paint, etc... Each chapter is written by the outstanding practicing expert in his or her respective field. The book, while beautifully illustrated, is intended to be a research tool and a serious work of scholarship. It's intended to inform further architectural investigation and history into the styles we associate with the Chesapeake. As such, it's a pleasure to read for what it reveals about historical form, and it's informative in what it can offer as a manual for accurate reproduction of that historical form. Here's a book that reveals all the secrets as to why so few people can actually tell the original buildings in Williamsburg from the reconstructions, and why it's important to reconstruct certain structures to begin with.The illustrations are outstanding. As the book is a study of style and its cultural contexts, the photographs and illustrations support that specific purpose. While it's often beautiful, this book should not be mistaken for a volume of artistic color photographs. The graphics, cutaways, elevations, floorplans, details, etc... are numerous and superb.If you have an interest in this style, or you are a practicing architect or craftsman working in this style, this book is a must. If your interests are more casual (i.e. less technical), this book will still keep your interest. Just be aware that the text may be difficult at times.This book will quickly become the standard of its type. The editor, Carl Lounsbury, is the absolute authority in this subject of architectural history. You're not going to find a better book.

The study team (and their predecessors) who have extracted so much out of construction in the Chesapeak have put their knowledge in a handsome book. People working in this field can use this book to confirm so much of what they see in an old house. And just when they feel really smug about the restoration they are doing, they will come upon impossible surprises that will remind them that the more this subject is studied, the greater our ignorance is revealed to be. Excellent reproduction of many valuable photographs.

I really loved this book. Vlad and Chloe are magnificent together. Vlad saves Chloe. She is unsure of him at first but as she settles down from the shock and really takes a moment to appreciate Vlad; it is inst-lust and love and so much more. This was a unique story but it did grab me from the beginning and kept me hooked until the end. Great book by a magnificent author.

I did enjoy this book very much,if you could call it a book. I spent over $14 for a book that was 100 pages long. The story was interesting and quite hot.It moved at a very fast pace,but the hero and heroine seemed to be a good to almost too perfect fit. If you like books were the male likes to be in control of everything you'll love this book,but i was happy to see the heroine eventuallyshow some backbone.

2nd book To Mountain men!!! AHHHHChloe a kick butt person when you first meet her you'll be like me when i read that scene. Vlad a beastly Russian Mountain man.. Saving his Angel and let me tell you it is HAWWWTTT!! i enjoyed there relationship from the startI do get alil annoyed with all the growling.. so much of it.. maybe ton it down.. beside that i enjoyed this series so much!!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It had me captivated from the beginning with the hot steamy scenes. I really enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it!

I always check out the page count because I can't stand these crazy short books with no plot development. It said 529 pages, so I think it's going to be all right. No, no. Apparently, there was one little caveat at the bottom of the description that it was really a novella despite the page numbers and there is some extra content. I find that to be a bulls$(# maneuver and really deceitful. Will be not be buying from this author again or any other who is dishonest about their work.

What a yummy quick read!! Vlad running through the fire to save Chloe was simply hot to read! I loved their rapport with each other. I would definitely read again. Great read! Love there are bonus reads in here as well.

This is a good short and steamy book. Vlad and Chloe have a quickly heated tale and danger comes knocking along the way. The Mountain Men series are exciting and fun to read. Alpha males and headstrong women.

I loved the plot in this book. It had action and great sex. I loved how Vladimir fell instantly in love with Chloe. It was as though he had been waiting all his life for her.

It might seem pointless to write a review of one of the cornerstones of Christian literature, yet I purchased this particular edition after struggling with the first chapter of the less expensive Kindle edition of the Pusey translation. I am glad I did. The grammar of Augustine's Latin Silver Age easily handles stylistic complexities that are not natural to modern English, and this translation by Henry Chadwick renders Augustine's prose brilliantly. It reveals not so much a saint with a tortured past as a passionate and thoughtful young man sustained and drawn by a love for truth, beauty, and friends on a journey in search of the source of them, which Augustine finds in the God preached by the Catholic faith. Unlike Newman's "Apologia pro Vita Sua," the "Confessions" are not a defense of a life so much as a hymn of praise of the one who led him and gave it meaning. Augustine realizes that nothing was happenstance, but that God walked with him throughout the journey. One could view this story as a journey from alienation to fulfillment, but abstractions sell it short. In many ways, it is a love story in which the protagonist overcomes difficulties to find his true love. In confessing his journey, Augustine reveals an astonishingly modern self-awareness. He understands himself as a person with a personal history, influenced both by social and cultural conditions and inner drives. Readers in our day may well find in him a mentor in their search for meaning in life. This book became a cornerstone of the Western Christian spiritual tradition and remains fundamental reading. I highly recommend this translation.

In the late seventies as I worked on a master’s degree in agricultural economics, my best friend, who had just entered seminary, encouraged me to undertake study of classics in the faith and early on I read Augustine’s (1978) Confessions. The Confessions proved to be a challenging read both because of my lack of seminary training and because of the old English translation. When I undertook this year to write my own memoir, my friend encouraged me to return to the Confessions both because the Confessions provided a template for all memoirs to follow and because this time I also had seminary training.Convinced of the wisdom to return to the Confessions, I sought a more modern translation that would be easier to read and, to my delight, found a translation by E.J. Sheed with an introduction by Augustinian biographer, Peter Brown. Brown (2000) is revered as one of the leading Augustinian biographers of our time and I had used his biography during my days in seminary.I break this review up into four parts. In the first part, I give an overview of the Confessions and why we are interested. In the second part, I review the life of Augustine and sin, as he describes it. In the third part, I will focus on Augustine’s coming to faith. And, in the fourth part, I will review his theological writings, which focus on the creation accounts in Genesis.Background on AugustineFor those unfamiliar with church history, Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) , which was in modern-day Algeria, lived right after the time of Emperor Constantine the Great (272-337 AD) who made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. Bishop Ambrose baptized Augustine who had such contemporaries as Jerome, who translated the Bible in Latin. The fourth century posed a heady time for the Christian church and Augustine’s theology influenced much of what followed. For example, Martin Luther (1483-1546), a leader in the reformation more than a thousand years later, was an Augustinian monk (Bainton 1995, 25).Of contemporary significance is the point that Augustine hailed from Africa where some of the best theology and early Bible manuscripts were copied. African scholarship dominated the early church and this dominance continued until the Islamic invasion in the sixth century, following the life and work of Mohammad (570-632 AD). The statement that Christianity is a “white man’s religion” (widely touted in developing countries) is not historically accurate and denigrates the significant contribution of African scholarship to the early church.What Are the Confessions?Augustine came to Christ as an adult. In his introduction, Peter Brown writes:“On Easter day, April 24th, 387, he [Augustine] had ‘put on Christ’ by receiving baptism at the hands of Ambrose.” (xv)Shortly before the death of his mother, Monica, who was a devout Catholic, later that year. Augustine supported himself teaching rhetoric, was heavily influenced by the writings of Plato, and wrote the Confessions to be read aloud. Each of the thirteen books could be read in about an hour’s time (xvi-xviii). Brown writes:“For, as Catholic bishop, Augustine did not simply know ‘about’ the Bible, or preach ‘on’ the Bible. He prayed out of it every day, using especially the book of Psalms, which he believed to be the direct, personal prayers of King David, and so the model of all Christan, as they had been of all Jewish, prayer.” (xvii-xviii)The influence of the Bible on the confessions is obvious to any reader because Augustine frequently begins a particular section in prayer and cites scripture throughout, allusions to which the editor has conveniently footnoted.Less obvious to the reader is the definition that Augustine used for confession. As noted by the editor’s glossary, for Augustine confession could be:1. a profession of faith,2. praise of God, or3. an act of penance (self-accusation).Today, we primarily assume the last definition (329).In his book, Confessions, Augustine of Hippo describes his life before and after converting to Christianity as an adult. Augustine shamelessly lays out the sins of his life, saying:“Let the mind of my brethren love that in me which You teach to be worthy of love, and grieve for that in me which You teach to be worthy of grief.” (191)I take this statement to mean that Augustine proposes to be frankly forthright in confession so that he can be an example to others. Is it any wonder that people trusted him and followed him into the monastic life? Having read the Confessions as a young man, I truly believe that they helped lead me to live ascetic lifestyle, even after it was no longer a financial necessity. There is no need to discuss the mercy, wisdom and beauty of Augustine's "Confessions", a classic treatise on the human condition, the source of sorrows and joys.Having read several translations with my favorite being worn out, I replaced it with this translation hoping for the best. The translation exceeded my expectations bringing me new and fresher understanding of Augustine's theological thoughts and my own situation.I am a simple lay person, not scholarly; I know there is much more to be gleaned from this wonderful translation and will keep at it. What I especially enjoyed are the footnotes that refer the reader to the scriptures that reflect Augustine's words, fleshing out a deeper, more practical meaning to the scriptures contextualized with everyday life. This is the area I want to follow up more thoroughly and diligently.The book binding is good for me as the inner margin seems slightly bigger than most paperback books easing the usual tendency of having to read on the curve of a book. A silly little thing that makes reflective reading better somehow.I agree with the translators decisions to keep some of the " Thee's" and "Thou's' to convey Augustine's use of the words when they express his personal intimacy with God as distinguished from generalized concepts of God. They draw me in to greater reverence and understanding.

Penzler Pick, August 2001: Two years ago, I wrote a book titled 101 Greatest Films of Mystery and Suspense. In addition to watching every one of those movies again (not exactly a horrendous ordeal), I did tons of research, flipping through or reading more than a hundred books about film. The best book--the one with the most offbeat stories and anecdotes, the most accurate information, and the most entertainingly written--was Dark City by Eddie Muller. It was a fascinating study of the great films noir, and a page didn't go by without my learning something. Now Muller is back with Dark City Dames. It's a very different kind of book, not offering the big-picture overview that Dark City did, but it's nearly as fascinating. It's a portrait of six of the greatest femme fatales of the wonderful black-and-white crime movies that filled the screens in the 1940s and '50s: Jane Greer (the star, with Robert Mitchum, of Out of the Past and The Big Steal), Marie Windsor (The Killing, The Narrow Margin), Ann Savage (Detour), Evelyn Keyes (The Prowler, Johnny O'Clock), Audrey Totter (The Lady in the Lake, The Unsuspected), and Coleen Gray (The Sleeping City, Kiss of Death, Nightmare Alley). But these aren't rehashes of plots and quotes from the rave reviews of these stars. Muller personally interviewed each of them, and the second half of the book is a kind of "Where are they now?" Perhaps oddly--perhaps not--these wicked, lying, cheating, double-crossing, money-hungry temptresses of the screen turn out to be rather nice ladies, as normal as one could expect of beautiful movie stars, and Muller brings them fully to life. There are regrets here, both on the part of the reader and of Muller, that space couldn't be devoted to many of the biggest female stars of film noir. There's no Barbara Stanwyck, or Gloria Grahame, or Veronica Lake, or Lisabeth Scott, or Claire Trevor, or Ida Lupino. Scott became a silent recluse, and the others had died. Another superb piece of interesting information delivered through poetic prose from the aptly-anointed Czar of Noir, Eddie Muller. This time he profiles the then and now of six essential women synonymous to Film Noir. I enjoyed this almost as much as his earlier masterpiece titled "Dark City - The Lost World of Film Noir."I've read just about everything published on this subject and can honestly say nobody does it better than Muller. Buy this book and while your at it, throw "Dark City" into your cart along with it... you'll thank me for it later.

"Dark City Dames": The Wicked Women of Film Noir is a fascinating book about some extraordinary screen actresses from the "good old days" of Hollywood. Eddie Muller's unique work is definitely not the typical coffee table volume composed for Hollywood nostalgia addicts. His superbly researched profiles of six noted actresses from the film noir genre; Coleen Gray, Jane Greer, Evelyn Keyes, Ann Savage, Audrey Totter and Marie Windsor, create real life drama from the femme fatale images of the past. Mr. Muller cleverly organized his book with two chapters for each actress, past and present. In every instance, all of the profiled women freely share their triumphs and disappointments, their loves and heartbreaks. While many of the insider stories and tidbits offered by Mr. Muller will amuse and titillate the reader, it is the admirable spirit, determination and character of these women that truly touched my heart. A case in point was the late Marie Windsor, a prime example of a unique talent who never realized her supernova screen potential. Toward the end of her life, Miss Windsor was desperately ill, taking care of a sicker husband, supporting a stepson, managing a household and holding down an important position with the Screen Actors Guild. Through it all, she remained determined to perservere and was ever grateful for a good life fully lived. Mr. Muller adroitly weaves the central themes of film noir, Hollywood and the studio system through the book, but the actresses and their fascinating personal lives earn the deserved star billing. "Dark City Dames" is a must for the film noir buff, but is a terrific book for anyone who enjoys the indomitability and compassion of the human spirit. They don't make movies like they used to, because they don't have actresses like these six around anymore.

We absolutely love this book! It arrived right on time, in perfect shape. This was a birthday present, and I was so pleased with the shape of the book. Each chapter has a little newspaper clipping in front telling about the star of that chapter. I can't stress how much we love this book. The stories about each star really gives you a complete view of their life.

It's not fair for me to review this book, as the author, Eddie Muller, is a friend of mine. I can say that, at the time it was written, the women profiled were still alive and interviewed by Eddie. I can't swear to that because I haven't even read the book yet. But it's out of print so I grabbed it as soon as I saw it for offer. It's a great companion to DARK CITY, by the same author and a definitive work on Hollywood in the 50s and 60s.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Very entertaining and compassionate exploration into the lives of these incredible actresses.

This looks cool, but it's actually a Christmas gift for my sun who is into film Nour, so I'll have to wait til after he reads it to know how good it is.

Great manual for new practitioners. I would say that it is best for middle childhood. Like the flexibility the manual offers.

This is the therapist's manual to the Coping Cat manual. It is broken down by session number and helps you prepare for the next session. It includes tips from other clinicians. It suggests activities, but does not closely follow the activities in the actual Coping Cat manual. As an intern using a manualized treatment for the first time, I appreciate the easy and quick read and it helps me feel that I have a good working plan for my patient.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has excellent data for efficacy in pediatric anxiety disorders. The Coping Cat method developed by Dr. Kendall is the one used in the majority of studies. This is the Coping Cat manual, very quick to read and well structured.

Helpful and effective.

This book is excellent for therapists that practice cognitive behavioral techniques. It is easy to follow and has clear suggestions that are easily incorporated into practice.

Easy to use. A bit hokey, even for little kids, but the main idea is pretty universally applicable.

This program is excellent for my work with anxious children. I wish you had it in Spanish, since I live and work in Mexico!!

It's a tried and true approach to structured cbt sessions with kids and it still holds up, as long as you are able to modify the techniques appropriately for the number of sessions you have with a given pt (16 is not always feasible).
