As soon as I began reading this book I felt a deep connection with what Shai has sogenerously shared.I am a massage practitioner now with five years experience, coming intothe art a bit late in life as I am now 59. I practice relaxation orientedmassage.Right from the earliest start of my practice I noticed the remarkable factthat I often felt very very good after giving a massage, even if I mighthave started a session with various aches or not quite right feelings. Mycertainty that this was a real effect of giving my massages from a placeof sincere caring touch has only strengthened over the years.Your beautiful description of the mutual benefits to giver and reciever inyour Thai massage practice all made perfect sense to me. It was also soclearly evoked that it helped me better understand my own experience.Thank you!

Plonski must have been paid by the word to write this. I am through the first 37% and all I have learned is that touching is good and that not touching is bad.There you have it. Now I am really through.

This book was recommended by a friend, and is a manual for how to give a Thai massage that will benefit both you and the person who receives it. I should warn you that the author is very into spiritual stuff, and there's a LOT of content about that side of things, but if that's not your bag, you can just skip past it to the actual massage content. Excellent instruction is given - from how to set up, poses and hand movements for yourself so you're putting less strain on your body and not going to hurt yourself, and even how to entice reluctant friends and family to be practice recipients! Then you have two sections with the actual details of how to give the massage: one with the instructions for when the recipient is face down, and one for when they're face up. There's plenty of details for each move, including pictures, written instructions, and alternate information depending on whether you're giving the massage on the floor, a bed or a table. You can also see matching videos for all these sections on the author's YouTube channel (there's a link at the back of the book).All in all I think it's a good book, although I think the link to the videos could've been clearer (they're on the author's YouTube channel, but the book sends you via his website, and there's only one link at the very back of the book - having a clear link at the start of the massage section, and the actual instruction section, leading to the YouTube channel, would've been good). Whilst I found some of the instructions difficult to follow as a disabled person, the alternates offered were a good base from which to work out an idea for my own alternate. And though I'm not a believer in the more spiritual aspects of the book, for those that are, the author definitely covers it well. I'd definitely recommend this book, together with the author's YouTube channel, if you want to try and learn how to give a Thai massage - it's a great skill to learn, and always much appreciated!

Shai Plonski has given us a beautiful way to experience timeless principles and share them with others through a form of Thai massage which he calls compassionate touch. We begin by learning how to move from our head to our heart so we can access the love that lives in every cell of our body. At that deep level of love, we move beyond the sense of separation that seems to dominate our lives. Compassionate touch is built upon that love, and opens us to our deep inner self where we begin to awaken to Who We Really Are.In sharing his story so openly, the author sheds light on our stories as well. We begin to see the “why” behind many of our own experiences and how love was moving us through all of it.In addition to the philosophy which he has so eloquently woven throughout this excellent book, Plonski has carefully and thoroughly shown the reader how to practice this form of massage. He addresses all the precautions, the techniques, and much more so we can make this practice our own.Whether or not you decide to practice compassionate touch as a form of massage, this book is well worth reading, for it clearly reminds us of deeper truths which, when embraced, will open us to a richer, more fulfilling life.

Through one of life's magical synchronicities I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to review this book free of charge direct from the author.When I first heard the title I thought, "oh cool, I could try massaging the hubs a bit - he'd love that. But I wonder where the benefit for me comes in?" I assumed the book would cover strategies to enjoy giving massages, but it's so much more than that!It's got info on the history of Thai Massage, its benefits, and detailed descriptions (and pictures!) of the techniques, but the author also really goes deep and shares his personal journey, stories from his students, and offers some great food for thought.I don't know why the idea of heart centered massage never occurred to me before, but it just makes so much sense! In the past when I've given someone else a brief rub down I've done it somewhat begrudgingly. Since I've been really focusing on mindfulness and only doing things that I can do without feeling resentful this book is came to me at the perfect time!I haven't had a chance yet to try out all the techniques, but I'm excited to and I'll update my review down the line when I have more to share on that front. Touch is so powerful, I can only imagine the results when one's intention is really clear and full of love!Bottom line: this book is a great idea for anyone on a spiritual journey (which is really all of us) looking for new ways to give and receive love or for those simply looking to learn more about massage and its benefits. If you're in the latter group you just might skip through some of the material, but I still think it would be worth it ;-)

Randal O'Toole is well researched in his analysis of the transportation infrastructure. Although not all of his ideas are workable, it is refreshing to see a different point of view on improving infrastructure and traffic congestion than is offered by so many. Well structured critical analysis. This is worth the read and should be required for all legislators and civil engineers.

As a Civil Engineer trainee with a master's degree, one of my interests is in transportation policy and how some proposed projects will (or will not) solve the problems that are facing us. I stumbled upon this book while reading about a proposed high-speed rail system in my home state, and finding many flaws in the plan.I've been reading this book, "Gridlock: Why We're Stuck in Traffic and What to Do About It", and it has offered a fresh perspective on transportation issues. The book explores many topics in transportation, including some history on transportation; some thoughts on mass transit and high-speed rail; environmental impact of different kinds of transportation; the economical and financial aspects of transportation improvements; and even on driverless cars. One of the most interesting facts I have learned from reading this book has been that the transportation improvement that has made the most positive impact on the environment has been to improve traffic signal coordination. It also turns out that mass transit really isn't that environmentally friendly compared to driving. For example, Florida's high-speed rail system (which has now been killed and re-killed) would have used up to 6 times as much energy as the cars they would have replaced!Some may criticize this book as "agenda-driven misinformation". That, it is not. It is a book grounded in the truth, and the conclusions that O'Toole makes follow well from his assertions. Like any good researcher, he cites his sources for all of his statements and assertions. I have personally checked many of his references myself and have found them to be reliable.I believe that this book ought to be required reading for all transportation professionals, whether they be at the university, working in the public sector (state DOT, etc.) or in the private sector (consulting). I believe in the freedom of movement, and after you read this book you may find as I have that we can (and should!) find creative ways to be better stewards of our energy, environmental, and economic resources while still preserving and enhancing this very important freedom.

O'Toole does a great job of composing an excellent book on the modern challenges of transportation policies, funding, congestion, and mass transit. A must read for anyone interested in transportation issues.The book made me confront a few soft and hard biases on the effectiveness and efficiency of certain transportation methods.

O'Toole claims that our cars are practically computer controlled anyway so why not use those computers to maintain a system of driverless cars that will eliminate gridlock by ostensibly eliminating the subjective elements of individual driver control. Sounds like a great idea, one which I recall Walter Cronkite's "21st Century" touting twenty years ago. There is lot to this book including important ideas about how government subsidizes a mass transit policy that actually encourages rather than eliminates gridlock. But I wanted to simply mention that one of the main criticisms - how would you phase in such a system when it takes twenty to thirty years to turnover the existing automobile inventory - could in my view be easily accomplished either by dividing the existing road network into driver and driverless similar to HOV lanes and/or having the cars be built with dual mode systems (e.g. autopilot). In any case well worth the read.

About some of the scientists who went into finance, and some of the ideas they brought to bear on the subject. The book, however, has many problems. One is that a lot of the material is covered at length elsewhere (fortune's formula and the eudaemonic pie come to mind), and the author does not see fit to cite this work. Nor does he cite Mandelbrodt's the misbehavior of markets, despite a considerable portion of the book being devoted to Mandelbrodt's work on finance.Second, the autho's hero worshipping approach is quite annoying - many of the people covered are well-known for their considerable talents in marketing themselves, and the author swallows the pitch hook, line, and sinker. For more on this, check out the low-star reviews of Sornette's 2009 book (and no, Mandelbrodt DID NOT discover fractals - they were studied by Julia before Mandelbrodt was born).Thirdly, the author does not appear to be a practicing financier, since his comments on finance proper are quite shallow.

This very readable book might better be called "The Physicists of Wall Street," as it tells about the geniuses who have given us improved understanding of the casino called "the stock market." French physicist Louis Bachelier over a century ago modeled the market as being a random walk, a drunken lurching, with steps that followed a normal [Gaussian] distribution. The equations and implications implications he deduced went nearly unnoticed for five decades, when the great M.I.T. economist Paul Samuelson was alerted to them, only to find that much of his own recent work had been scooped by Bachelier, whom Weatherall considers the Isaac Newton of economics.Who cares? Those who invest daringly in the market, beyond my own favorite, the "buy and hold" strategy, which has worked well for Warren Buffett. Options, futures, warrants...these derivatives based on stock prices are much more sensitive than the stocks themselves to changes in the environment and changes in the traders' world-views. Fortunes have been made and fortunes lost, some of the latter due to the bubbles that the fizz of the physicists helped create. The normal distribution was not quite right. Physicist Maury Osborne found the log-normal made more sense: it never went negative, fit the data better, had larger [and more accurate] probabilities for some extreme events. Eventually, Benoit Mandelbrot showed that distributions that gave even larger probabilities for extreme events [had longer, fatter "tails'] were needed and still could under-predict market collapses. Nassim Taleb in "The Black Swan" and "Antifragile" maintained that the truly unusual cannot be predicted, only hedged against.Some physicists in the market have become billionaires, so they know things most of us do not. One strategy has been to use computers and sophisticated algorithms, usually closely held secrets, to move a bit faster than the market to get in ahead of the ups and out ahead of the downs. This works when in the normal trading regime. Clever hedging with stocks and warrants etc. can also deliver nice returns in normal times. There may be clues that warn of impending crises, as physicist Didier Sornette has shown, but most of us may be wise to follow Prof. Taleb's injunction to put the bulk of our investments in safe, conventional alternatives, speculating with a small fraction...and generally betting that disaster has been under-estimated.Economists tend to be skeptical of physicists in their playground. Some humility is appropriate on both sides. Still, it was Nobel-prize-winning economists who rode Long-Term Capital Management into bankruptcy, apparently partly due to relying on the normal distribution, rather than something a little more complicated and closer to reality.Weatherall's book has extensive notes and references and a couple of figures, but no equations. The stories are well-told, with a mix of interesting personal and technical information. Lots can be learned, just don't bet the farm.I really liked this book, but I am a retired physicist. We transcend humility.

This book is an intelligent explication about the financial phoenomena. The author so follows several models of important economists, whom have tried to read inner those aspects. Particularly it is interesting as the fractal mathematics had had the possibility to arrive at this level of knowledge, in a better way than the tradition related to the Black-Scholes theorem.Economists as Taleb and Krugman, with mathematicians as Poincaré, Mandelbrot, Lévy, represent the foundaments of a new science which knows the economy in similar way of quantum physics.Quantum mathematics and this new economics must be given by exact axioms, and that will be the next job of mathematics.

Weatherall's book is very timely because it covers one of the least understood aspects of the 2007-2010 financial crisis: the change on Wall Street from hiring well-bred young Ivy Leaguers to hiring mathematicians and physicists. Weatherall's early chapters on the pioneers of quantitative methods in finance are very well done, and he explains clearly the basic issues in applying such methods to finance. The second half of the book, however, becomes a polemic and Weatherall doesn't explain what went wrong in the 2000s except to say that he disagrees with Nicholas Taleb's "Black Swans". In particular, I don't understand how he could write a book on this subject and devote only one sentence to James X. Li's application of copula functions, which were the engine underlying CDOs and were a classic case of work imported from academia to Wall Street - and, furthermore, his sentence is wrong.

This book starts out interesting, as the author discusses the early history of mathematical finance culminating in the success of early hedge fund pioneers such as Thorp. However, the thread is mostly lost in the 2nd half amidst rambling discussions of two physics "applications" (chaos theory to crash prediction, and gauge theory to inflation), which are dubious to say the least. It would have been much more interesting for this reader to learn exactly what it is that most physicists are actually doing on Wall Street now, and how those activities make so darn much money. Why couldn't he track down former employees of Jim Simons, or ultrafast trading algorithm designers, or physicists working as risk modelers at banks, and tell us what they do?

About the Author

Anne Marie Richardson-Gibbs is an early childhood special educator and has provided inclusion services for the past twenty years in both community-based preschool and public school settings. Currently Ms. Richardson-Gibbs works for the El Monte City School District providing inclusion support to preschool and early elementary age children with disabilities. Ms. Richardson-Gibbs has been the director of an early intervention program providing services to infants, toddlers and their families from the East Los Angeles community and worked as a statewide early intervention program specialist for the California Department of Education. She was the training coordinator for Project Support, a federally funded personnel training grant, creating inclusion support inservices, training videos and a manual for early childhood special educators. Ms. Richardson-Gibbs has taught ECSE classes at California State University, Los Angeles and served as chairperson for both the Infant Development Association of California and the Los Angeles Early Intervention Directors’ Forum. She continues to provide trainings and inservices for Head Start and school district personnel on inclusion support, behavior management, and autism and developmental delays in young children. M. Diane Klein, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a professor of early childhood special education at California State University, Los Angeles, where she has directed the programs in early childhood special education for 30 years. In her early career, she worked as a speech-language pathologist with young children with disabilities and their families. She has directed numerous federally funded projects involving caregiver–child interaction, working with infants with low incidence and multiple disabilities, training of early childhood special educators, and training inclusion-support personnel (Project Support). Along with Anne Marie Richardson-Gibbs, Dr. Klein has produced a variety of training videos related to inclusion-support strategies for young children with disabilities in community-based early childhood education settings. Marci J. Hanson, Ph.D., is Professor in the Department of Special Education at San Francisco State University (SFSU). At SFSU, Dr. Hanson is actively engaged in teaching, research, and service related to young children and their families. In addition to these responsibilities, she directs the SFSU joint doctoral program in special education with the University of California, Berkeley, and codirects the early childhood special education graduate program. She is a consultant with the child and adolescent development faculty of the Marian Wright Edelman Institute for the Study of Children, Youth, and Families at SFSU and with San Francisco Head Start.

I remember getting chills when I first read that blurb which sounds like a revengeful storyline with shady characters. Well, call me a glutton to misery but I had to, had to read this tale of vengeance.And trust me, it was totally worth it! This book broke me, made it hard to breathe, left me palpitating and mostly gave a huge book hangover. Get ready to meet the twisted characters whom you would love to hate and get tangled in the web of emotions making you question everything you know about love and romance. From a factual perspective, this was a great story dealing with some of the facts of thanksgiving, but it is very weak in the heart of the story of why the pilgrims were giving thanks and what they had been through with persecution for their trust in God.

The thing I like best about this book is that the writing and illustrations are made with young kids in mind. Our schools don't spend a great deal of time teaching the truth behind the Pilgrims' adventure and the first Thanksgiving. It is a story that goes far greater than turkey and cranberry sauce. And it is a story that the kids not only will enjoy hearing, but through realistic illustrations they can better understand the true impact of the Thanksgiving Story and why it should be such a respected and celebrated fall holiday in America. Many thanks to Harry Truman when Thanksgiving nearlyb350nyearslater was declared a national holiday in 1948.Those who came before us certainly sacrificed that we would have this day to celebrate. And it is through our kids that they will insure that the story and the holiday will continue through future generations. Good book for all families.REW 02/2019

Alice Dalgliesh did a fine job of describing the pilgrim story through the eyes and to the ears of young children. The art work by Helen Sewell is engaging and distinctive. Sewell also illustrated the Little House on the Prarie and other children's books. My six year old granddaughter enjoyed my reading the book to her. Afterwards she read it again for herself. Highly recommended.

The illustrations are gorgeous, and great for young children! I love these old fashioned books so much more than modern silly cartoonish illustrations that take the imagination and beauty out of children's literature. Great story to teach your children about the first thanksgiving!

This is an excellent "history book" for listeners as young as first grade, maybe even Kindergarten if the child is accustomed to chapter books. It tells the story of the arrival of the Pilgrims, and the times leading up to the first Thanksgiving. There are five chapters, and illustrations on most pages. The story is told in a manner that is full of historical detail, and yet also delightfully simple. We follow three Pilgrim children--Giles, Constance, and Damaris Hopkins--and read of their experiences travelling on the Mayflower, building a settlement in New Plymouth, first being afraid of and then befriending some Indians, and finally sharing a feast together, each thanking God in their own way. This would be a great family read for Thanksgiving Day, or leading up to it.

This little book seems to be historically accurate. It tells the story of the Hopkins Family as they cross the Atlantic to find a new home in North America. The violence that the Pilgrims endured in Indian encounters is smoothed over to make it suitable for younger minds. I've read some of the journals of these settlers and this book is a wonderful explanation of the first Thanksgiving. Highly recommended and should be read in every K-2 classroom during November.

A little dated, we ordered with Squanto's Journey to get a more well rounded story.

This was a repeat purchase for my new nieces. I've been reading this book to my children for over 16 years and it's still our favorite Thanksgiving story.
