As a superfan of the Howard Stern Show, I read every book every staff member writes. I moved to a new city and didn't have a library card, saw this book CHEAP on Amazon and just bought it. It's ok. It hits the highlights of Gary's life and career....tells how he got the job at the HSS, talks about the infamous first pitch, the love tapes and all that stuff that die hard Stern fans will remember. However, it seems to lack any real depth. He jumps from topic to topic, which are not even related to one another...and even skips around with time. You'll be reading a chapter about something that happened at the HSS, and the next chapter he's talking about being back in college....just weird.The part about his brother dying of AIDS was heartfelt and I could feel the pain of losing his brother. I'm sure that wasn't easy to talk about. Also, you come to find out his mother was just kinda "out there" from his early childhood. It's a good peek inside the inner circle of Baba Booey...I just wish it had been better written to flow more smoothly from childhood>>adolescence>>young adult>>adult>>Stern Show.

I never really knew much about "The Man Behind The Booey" but after reading this book I have a greater appreciation for him. Great stories about his childhood, family and love life (some pretty embarrassing) and a great understanding as to how he is able to work with the way that Howard Stern treats him.

Obviously I am a huge Stern fan. I think you would have to be @ least a long time follower to enjoy this lighthearted book. However it has moments that could seriously bring a tear to your eye. Yes, he does have silly lists of songs etc. etc......but that's what makes him Baba Booey! It does have moments about his dysfunctional family (And I mean dysfunctional). The one thing you will learn that Gary Dell'Abate is a very fortunate man to have survived his upbringing. I am not ashamed to say that I enjoyed this book because you will laugh your ass off & realize how loyal Howard Stern is to his employees. The front he puts on is misleading. He has been loyal to Gary, Fred, & Robin & knew he had the chemistry he wanted. I have personally spoken to other producers that rave about Gary & his kindness & that he is very good @ his job. Buy a used copy for a penny & give it a read.

Let me put my review in context. I'm a casual Howard Stern fan, having always found him (and the rest of the gang) funny but having also not listened to them in years. Love the movie Private Parts, but not in the diehard fan camp. Maybe that's why I was happy to read this book in its own terms and didn't need it to be more about the show than it was. I feel there was a fair amount of time spent on the show, but this was more a story of his family, growing up, and how he ended up working for Howard.A great deal of the book was about his mother's bouts with mental illness and how it shaped him, as well as losing his brother to AIDS. I think you have to come to this with compassion in order to enjoy it and with an understanding that what happens on the show isn't real life. Anyone who comes to this wanting it to be about the show, will only be sporadically happy, but I found it pretty interesting. The co-writing, Chad Millman, did a nice job making it sound like Gary's voice, or my understanding of his voice over the years. While I wasn't blown away, I felt that the book accomplished what the author(s) set out to do. Gary comes across as a pretty sincere guy.Parents who are degrees of crazy are familiar to a lot of people. Growing up, even in a good home, is necessarily about being at the whims and moods of your elders and their ideas about child-rearing and so I almost always sympathize with stories about growing up. It started with Mommy Dearest and still persists. I also see why he's had a job so long on a show in which mood swings make for good radio when other people would have slipped out the door.The cover is pretty funny, but I almost wonder if it mislead people into thinking it was going to be a different type of book, along with perhaps some preconceptions. I found it to be an entertaining and interesting read. I also thought the note of "be careful what you wish for" concerning perfect parents at the end was well-handled and relatable to a lot of people.4 stars.

I really enjoyed reading "They Call Me Baba Booey," although it does often feel like a final draft more than a finished product. Blame for this could be placed on Chad Millman who really does not seem to make a consistent effort to put Gary's words into actual prose. A lot of the writing literally feels like a computer program simply reciting what Gary is saying as opposed to a writer trying to fine tune it. In this case, Gary should've just written it himself and had a really good editor step in and improve it. Otherwise, Millman should've stepped up a little bit and made it a smoother read.That criticism aside, there is a lot to like in this book. Gary has an interesting story growing up with a mentally unstable mom, a stoic italian world war II vet father, an older rebellious brother, and another brother who contracted and died from AIDS before the world really knew what the disease was about. In addition to those parts of the book, Gary's recollections of starting out in college radio, working various jobs on Long Island, and eventually getting the NBC job that would lead to Howard are all very entertaining. His recollections of the disastarous Mets picth in 2009 as well as the love tape he sent to his ex are really worth the price of the book. Those two sections are pretty perfect. It's the more mundane stuff that seems to come off as sloppy writing that is too casual for its own good. Again, not a huge complaint, just a shame that a little more time was not spent on the editing.A listener of Stern since '89, this really is a must for any fan...even with all those stupid, pointless lists!

great book about a great guy - as a fan of the howard stern show i of course want to know everything i can about anyone involved with the show - this was a well written book and it has added so much to the show that i will forever be thankful that gary wrote it

This is the best book of which I know, on the development of HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatographic) separations.However, there have been important changes in HPLC since this edition, especially with smaller diameter particles for packing materials.I wish Wiley would prod the authors on an update.

I find this book to be a valuable reference book on HPLC. I work extensively with HPLC and I can always rely on it to provide the in-depth explanations of what's going on. It covers all aspects of method development, form deciding where to start and figuring out what's going wrong, to finishing the method and validating it, although the validation chapter is just an overview. As of 2007, it's still relatively up to date, regarding new column technologies and latest practices.I really recommend this book, if it's your first time developing a method or if you're a seasoned professional, you will find many useful chapters in the book.

I don't write many reviews and definitely not many one-star reviews. The book's claim of being "fully illustrated" is absolutely false. The sparrow and finch sections were fairly detailed but the rest was really not useful. I am not a huge birder but I enjoy being able to identify birds and love learning about new birds when I travel. I'm on a trip Georgia, so nowhere exotic and there have been many birds that I've had difficulty finding and had to use my phone to identify correctly. There are generally only illustrations of common birds and a few less common but there are not illustrations of the bird in flight, the female bird (even when there is significant sexual dimorphism), or juvenile birds. Information on each bird is in paragraph form and is not consistent from bird to bird (some mention nesting habits but others do not, some outline more specific ranges than others). Returned the kindle version though it was ~6 bucks because it was so unhelpful! :(

Just received this and my daughter loves it! We actually have many of these Fandex "books" and all of them have been an easy and fun way to learn about lots of different subjects.

I am giving this to my sis-in-law(along with some other things). It came quickly and in excellent condition. For years I have given my sis-in-law a gift card for Christmas. She doesn't have a lot of interests, and she doesn't like to read. When she mentioned that she wished she had a book about birds, I took a chance and ordered this. It is small, but it is full of info and has a lot of pictures. This would be a good stocking stuffer for a kid about third grade and up, or any other adult. Don't give this as the only gift to someone, or that person will think that you are cheap! I would love to get this book with a mug and some Hershey's kisses in it.

I just started watching birds when I got a feeder for our backyard. I love it! I know the most popular ones but I needed a book that would give me the names of ones you don't see anymore. It is such a joy to watch the beautiful creations of Jehovah. Oh and also...to watch the squirrels try to get up the pole. My husband made it so they can't get to the feeders! But they sure try!

I got this for my mom, who is starting to slow down and enjoy things she never had time for in her younger years. She loves the large colorful pictures, and being able to spot the different birds she sees in her yard!

I love Golden Guides. I got my first as a kid in the 60’s. I still have all of mine & am now buying them for my grandchildren. Not at all babyish, great illustrations, with informative written detail.

I don't suppose dedicated birders would have much use for this guide, but for those of us who think it would be fun to be able to name the birds that live in or migrate through our neighborhoods, this is a wonderful resource. For the parent with curious children, Herbert S. Zim's guides are indispensable.These hip-pocket sized books are nicely designed and simple enough so that children can use them on their own after just a little guidance. At the same time, though, they offer plenty of solid information. The illustrations are clear, copious, and attractive.If you are looking for a basic guide to common birds, this is a perfect choice. Also, be sure to see the other Golden Guides by Herbert S. Zim.

The illustrations are gorgeous. The CD is perfect but those not familiar with Creole might have difficulty understanding.

So excited I finally found this book; however, when it arrived I was shocked to find the book had significant water damage, split spine and no DVD. Clearly a the description was misrepresentation of the actual product.

My students loved this story. I recommend it to teachers and librarians as a great read aloud with an interesting story and positive theme.

A more accurate title would have been: Reasons the Jesus of the Gospels Never Existed.David Fitzgerald shows quite compellingly the events of the gospels couldn't have happened as written. First, many reliable historians wrote about events in Judea during the early 1st century, including some with a special interest in religious movements. They documented the existence of other faith healers and so-called Jewish messiahs, but none makes any mention of Jesus, who was supposedly famous and had throngs of people listening to his teachings and witnessing his miracles.Second, the gospels as written have historical problems. The trial of Jesus could not have taken place as described, for it contradicts known Jewish legal practice. The real historical Pilate was very different from the indecisive figure of the Gospels. Mark alone made many mistakes about Judean geography and custom, which Matthew corrected in his gospel.Fitzgerald also documents the surprising lack of biographical details about Jesus in the epistles of Paul, the earliest written sections of the New Testament. It's as if Paul were writing about a purely spiritual figure, not an historical one. Fitzgerald also notes the allegorical style of the Gospel of Mark, the earliest account of Jesus on which all the others are based. He shows the gospel writers weren't composing biographies or writing down eyewitness testimony. They each wrote for different audiences with different portrayals of Jesus.The author presents enough material to make listeners at least consider the possibility that Jesus the man never existed. However, I don't think he constructs an open-and-shut case, as the title promises. The book actually works best as a primer on New Testament scholarship. It would serve as eye-opening reading for any Christian who still believes the gospels were written by eyewitnesses, or that historical research confirms them.

"Nailed" is the result of a fifteen plus year study by self proclaimed "Amateur" David Fitzgerald who painstakingly lays out the case for a Mythic Christ. Well annotated, well thought out, easy to read and damning to the concept of a "real historic" Christ. Unfortunately, as with most books of it's type, Fitzgerald will be "preaching to the choir" as those who SHOULD read this probably won't. But for those with an interest in religion, Christianity, religious history or Theology this is a definite must read.Fitzgerald has also done a much longer and expanded study of the Christ myth in "Mything In Action", a three part series that I've just started and cannot recommend highly enough for anyone who has read "Nailed". "Mything" expands on the information presented in "Nailed", once again managing to be informative, interesting and readable. Fitzgerald knows his stuff and knows how to present it.

Fitzgerald is scorned as a " myther" by many atheists and Christian fundamentalists alike as his simplistic accessible book "Nailed" does something scholars in the broader continuum of academia despise. He asks a simple question then sets about making the case to answer that question. On face value his case seems pretty strong.I've read some scholarly rebuttals that are frankly too dense and arcane to convince me that Fitzgerald's argument is without merit - but I'm just your average Joe so what do I know? I came away convinced that the pablum I've been served all of my life by the Christian faith is insulting, however.The earth is round - and most people today would readily concur - yet a few centuries ago this seemingly obvious fact would have been scorned by most everyone who could see it was flat - period. Once a critical mass of the population believes something to be true, it is for all practical purposes true.As for the matter of whether or not a historical Jesus existed, there is clearly a critical mass who believe, without a shred of a doubt, that he did. So without any hard evidence to refute the belief, it is a yeoman's task to challenge conventional wisdom. Fitzgerald takes up that cross.To think of the millennia of deaths, injustices and strife resulting from what may well be an elaborate hoax boggles the mind, and is in fact infuriating to me whether or not a Jesus who was known as the Messiah walked the earth 2000 years ago.I don't think this book will answer the question it poses to the satisfaction of most people who read it, but I do think it does a great job of providing a basis for further contemplation, discussion and research regardless of one's present point of view on the subject.I deducted a star, as I think the author underestimates the readers' willingness to go deeper and follow along without the author adopting such a laid back, casual writing style. He also could have sited more authoritative sources and provided some balance, but I believe he is attempting to offer a polemic for the general audience used to having their Christian theology served with a nice warm glass of milk, as opposed to the serious apologist who find fault simplicity of the text.He's fighting the pablum with pablum!I'm looking forward to reading the sequel he mentions in several online blog posts.
