This is an excellent resource for anyone traveling in the Northern Virginia area. The maps are well laid out and very clear.

the picture is deceiving, it says 42 edition but ours was 34. it worked for its purpose but it is false advertizing.

I guess I wasn't looking carefully enough, but I didn't expect this to be *the 1999 edition*. Thoroughly out of date, considering the way NVA is developing. And it's also kind of worn. But since I intend to keep it in my car for emergencies, it will probably serve the purpose.

These maps are very hard to read compared to the 2001 edition. I had to get a magnifying glass to find my own street. I live in Arlington and it is very built up. In places less urban, like most of Fairfax or Loudoun Counties, places with lots of empty space, it should be ok..It will not do for a car map unless you take a strong light and a very good magnifying glass with you also. I wish I had gone to a store to buy it. Then I would have seen that it was not good for my intended use.If you wear reading glasses look at it in a store before you buy it. You can still buy it from Amazon, of course..

When I moved to Northern Virginia, from India, I found myself having to learn very fast how to motor around the area. In this, ADC's Street Map of Northern Virginia was a life-saver for me. I have lost count of how many hours I have spent poring over its pages to find out how to get to stores, offices and touristy places. The individual page maps are well laid out with colors used thoughtfully to contrast, without being garish. The text, by and large, is easy on the eyes, barring the smaller street names which require some squinting. Exhaustive index pages make finding streets and locations a piece of cake. Best of all, the maps keep in mind the differing perspectives of drivers as well as pedestrians. In fact, now that I am well familiar with the area, I often find myself flipping the pages just for the sheer peasure of it or to find something new. I must mention in particular the layout maps of the local airports, which are a great help for the unwary. For anyone who has just moved into this area or who wants to explore and discover the area better, there is no better book. Highly recommended!

This really should be titled "Fairfax County" because that's about all it covers. Or "DC suburbs" perhaps. I found the "Regional Northern Virginia" atlas to be a lot bigger help in househunting in Northern VA as it covers 4 whole counties. Just read the descriptions carefully to make sure which "Northern Virginia" atlas you need. ADC maps are fantastic though.

This final book of the "Dragonlance Chronicles" trilogy will not disappoint. In order to pull this off the entire plot has to have been planned out well in advance (indeed, well before starting to write) to avoid a meandering making-it-up-as-I-go-along feel that leaves the reader with the suspicion of being jerked around. Thankfully, authors Weis and Hickman seemed to have avoided this. If forced to guess I would posit that the first book in the trilogy was meant to stand alone in case sales did not warrant sequels. Once it was clear that they had a hit on their hands the next two books were plotted together.The book has many strong points. A few of my favorites:1.) The moral ambiguity of Raistlin. Yes, he generally aids the good guys but it is clear he has an agenda of his own. Very well handled and kept me guessing throughout the book.2.) Kitiara. Utterly ruthless. But does she still have a weakness for Tanis as Lord Soth suspects or is she just toying with Tanis as she claims? Does she even know?3.) The "hangers on" getting a chance to shine. Caramon, Tasslehoff, Flint, Tika, and Laurana all have integral parts to play and are not there for muscle, comic relief, or as a damsel in distress.4.) Well thought out and entertaining sequences featuring Astinus and the library in Palanthas, the sea elves and the city of Istar, and Fizban.On the debit side it seemed that Goldmoon, Riverwind, and Gilthanas fade from the story in this book.The Kindle version is flawless except for the sparse chapter marks on the progress bar. The map is also near useless.Highly recommended. Don't be put off by the role playing game origins of this trilogy.

I had a hard time reading this book. There were parts that were a bit slow, and other parts that were so suspenseful I had to walk away. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though-- I was so invested in the characters that I was getting upset during the last few chapters, when I thought there was no way they could get through their situation. I thought there was no way there could be a happy ending. But in the end, it was very satisfying. I enjoyed the twists and the way the story resolved itself. I look forward to reading the rest of the books about these characters.

This was the 3rd book in the Dragonlance Chronicles. It was a reread and every bit as wonderful as I remember it. I laughed, I cried, but I was never bored. This is an awesome trilogy and I recommend it to anyone that likes dragons, magic, and adventure.

I read this series ages ago. I came across a photo that reminded me of Fizban and decided to revisit my friends from Krynn. I couldn't find my hard cover collection and was given a gift card for Christmas.If you like The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, Eragon, or even Harry Potter you'll find something in this series that appeals to you.

For those of you, like I did, that thought volume 4 is the continuation of the series... it really isn't in many ways. First of all the characters are different and you would need to read "Second Generation" to even get an idea of them. Aside from that, it was written much later and others have complained about a drop in story quality. Well enough of Volume 4, this is Volume 3 and it is fantastic. I hate to see a series end, and the entire time I was reading I was wondering how they would wrap up all the action in just one book, but it was done nicely and didn't feel rushed. Again, the realism of the series shines in this book, as the emotions of the characters come to a final climax. If there is any complaint about this series, its that the adventure had to end, but I honestly don't think it could have ended in any better way.

Better than the first time I read them, the Dragonlance Chronicles first trilogy is a story that gets into your heart.I have come to know these people, care deeply about them, and they have become part of who I am.They are family, now, and are always welcome to share their adventures with me, over a mulled wine and some spiced potatoes, of course!From Raist to Tas, and all the shades of dark and light between, I will always have room for them.

Characters are well developed and grow throughout the story. Lots of plot twists. High interest. Good versus evil. Good does not always win. Things are not always what they seem. Interesting fantasy for young reader but carries deeper philosophical meaning to more mature reader

Inspired by the philosophers of antiquity, Montaigne is one of the principal French writers of the Renaissance. To a degree he created the ‘essay’ form and his work has been pivotal for later thinkers. John Florio’s English translation was taught—in my day—as a work of literature itself and it helped to popularize a writer ‘adopted’ by the English as one of their own, at least in interests, spirit and unique personality. Montaigne was claimed by the romantics; he influenced Nietzsche, heartened the postmodernists and remains a writer of global importance and influence.SB’s biography answers the question, ‘how to live?’ in twenty chapters, each of them keyed to a theme in Montaigne’s work. Hence, chapter 9: “Q. How to live? A. Be convivial: live with others.” The themes, however, do not trump the biography. This is not an endless examination of thematic content with an occasional look at the events in Montaigne’s life. It is a systematic biography held together by thin thematic divisions.It is also a very learned biography, expanding at length, e.g., on the civil wars of the period, the driving ideologies, weaponry and specific details, both personal and political. It studies, e.g., the manner in which the texts of the Essays have come down to us, (what we would call) the copy texts, the emendations, the condensations, and so on. There is comparatively little on the content of the Essays themselves, ‘comparatively’ being the operative word. We learn a great deal about Montaigne’s classical influences, the nature of his pyrhonnism, the dimensions of his political associations, his personal relationships, his estate, its winemaking, and so on, but the only essay that is discussed at some length is (as one would expect) the longest of the essays, the Apology for Raymond Sebond.It is sometimes said that the first requirement for a great biography is the author’s love for her subject (balanced, always, by a willingness to speak the truth, wherever its elements might fall). SB clearly admires Montaigne and wishes that today’s thinkers, writers and politicians (Montaigne served in all three capacities) would read him, be inspired by him and take lessons from him.The writing is crisp and clear, direct and candid. While it is undergirded by a great deal of scholarship that scholarship does not drag the book down and bore the reader with tedious details. It contains a bibliography, index and series of endnotes, sufficient to guide the reader to other texts and explore/verify issues that have come under question.The book is very much like its subject—a pleasant, human and humane read that takes on difficult subjects with a light touch and details experiences that will find echoes in the reader’s own heart.Highly recommended.

In this book she gives us a moving biography of Montaigne, a history of the genesis and contents of his marvelous essays, an introduction to the history of editing his great masterpiece, and a lively and fascinating narrative of informed and popular responses to his book in successive eras. Montaigne very much feels like real presence in this book, one with a distinctive personality that is vividly represented by the author. One feels that Bakewell, along with hundreds or thousands of earlier readers have developed a personal relationship with the great writer, and Bakewell helps explain why this in the case even though an overwhelming share of readers of his essays of course have had no contact with him, except through his essays. Bakewell also does a wonderful and interesting job of explaining the very different critical reception Montaigne's essays received among his contemporaries and in succeeding generations of readers, both in France and elsewhere.The ingenuity of the biography helps explain why critical reception of Bakewell's own book was so positive. But the plain fact is that Bakewell is also a stylish writer, capable of holding our fascinated (and occasionally amused) attention, even when she is discussing the minutiae of successive editions or of obscure editorial quarrels. The book was warmly recommended to me by a friend who said flatly it was the best book he'd read in a year or, indeed, in any recent year. You'll probably find this kind of enthusiasm in many of the Amazon reviews. If you're interested in philosophy or in a charismatic writer and thinker in a long bygone, tumultuous era, and if you care about artful construction and stylish writing, this might be the book for you. There is a lot of controversy over this book in AA as it is not conference approved. This book came about from the notes of a member of the Oxford group which was basically a prayer group that Dr. bob attended with Henrietta Siberling for 2 years before he got sober. Bob and Ann Smith attended this group for 2 years never admitting his alcoholism even though that and his financial troubles were well known to the group. One day he admitted to the group he could not control his drinking and they prayed over him, 2 weeks later Bill Wilson rolled into town.There is a lot of wisdom in this book and as AA 12 steps was built on the 4 steps of the Oxford group, I feel it cannot hurt to read this. The Oxford 4 steps were 1. Abandon yourself to God. 2. Make a written moral inventory. 3. Make restitution for harms done. And 4. Work with others. Sound familiar, this is all documented by Gail who started the archives of AA and her lectures on history of AA can be found on AA Podcasts.Another book I highly recommend is the little red book written 10 years after the big book and really gets into the 12 steps in more detail than the 12 and 12.Good luck and I wish you all the best as you trudge the road of sobriety.

This little black book is really something else. I've been going to alanon meetings for about 2 weeks now and my sponsor wants to wait a month before starting my steps. The thing you quickly learn in alanon is that although you may not have a drinking problem, we are still sick with the disease of alcoholism. My loved one is currently in rehab and I just knew I had to do something for myself. I'm learning how to find inner piece and this book (along with others) has been amazing. My only qualm is that it does reference God a lot and that's not really my thing, but I can easily get past that and look at the true message.

I have used this book for 8 years and will eventually have to get a new one for myself. I give them to other folks in the program as it has been my mainstay, especially when I was unable to attend meetings as often as I wanted. I like that it gives a daily meditation, which I live and breath for. It sets me on the right track for my day, and teaches me to internalize the messages in recovery. Used properly, it can be a worthy tool for maintaining one's sobriety. Even though the readings remain the same I get something new every year from the daily inspirations, and this book has spoken to my needs of the moment more times than I can count. It is truly a God-given hand to be held in the face of life on life's terms.

It's a very good publication with daily reminders to living a day at a time.......spiritually and through AA. Make no mistake, this book is used by people in AA and for people who believe in God/a Higher power. I think if you're a spiritual person suffering from an addiction and if you can get past the occasional references to being in AA and you substitute your addiction for alcohol it's a great daily reminder to take things one day at a time. And in reality that's all anyone really has whether you're suffering from an addiction or not.

Too big, I should have paid an extra dollar or two for a smaller one. This is a full page size book and I would love a smaller one to keep in my purse. The words are irreplaceable though!

This time honored book is a reliable source of support for those in recovery. The daily messages serve to help construct a positive thought pattern as we go throughout the day. Richmond Walker wrote one amazing book back in the early 1950s and I have to say that next to the big book and the 12 and 12, this book has been instrumental in my 22 years of sobriety. This book has been by my side the whole time. I cannot recommend it enough. I think it blows the doors off of Daily Reflections which I think was done in a very half measures way. This book is way beyond that one.

This book doesn't get the credit it deserves. If every AA member read and lived by this book, there'd be a lot more happy and sober AA members. It helps teach people to truly live the steps, incorporate them in their lives, learn the traditions, and act responsibly and respectfully within (and outside of) AA. Many of the meditations are taken from quotes in the Big Book. It's a solution based daily prayer and meditation book. Invaluable, in my opinion. I'd give it 10 stars if I could.

This is the first book I’ve read that approaches the details of accounting strategically, as opposed to technically. I think Ryan’s practical approach aligns accounting methods and the structure of financial statements with Lean thinking. Most importantly, the approach supports effective corporate and managerial decision-making. Intuitively, we may know that our income statements and balance sheets aren’t giving us the whole story or that the hierarchical structure of our departments and divisions no longer seems to fit like it once did, yet we continue with the status quo. Ryan bids us to evaluate and re-align our organizations and accounting methods with our missions, visions, and markets, but not to arbitrarily “shake things up” as some do. Rather, Ryan’s offers an eminently intentional and strategic paradigm that may positively change the course of your organization and chart a successful future. While there are some elements of the book that an accounting or finance professional will likely find rudimentary, the book is threaded with crucial underlying principles that even some Fortune 500 companies have implemented only in recent years. I found the book practical and easy to follow, even though I’m not a CPA. The book is worth every penny.

Nowhere in here are exacting details giving you the exacting definitions to follow to achieve greatness but, if you’re willing to look past the suggestions and hone your own system, you will succeed.This book gives you detailed analysis using large corporations reporting 10-K filings to show you the diverse ways other industry leaders handle their reporting. This book provides Flow through Presentations, Charts, Graphs, and URL links to aid any reader with quality sources of information. These detailed explanations would be helpful for a non-financial executive. And that this kind of helpfulness could be expanded into a textbook type book for that purpose.The author also uses bold and italicized lettering to make note of the more important factors you may want to come back too. This gives you, and myself, the ability to read the book with serious intent but also be able to reference the materials presented.I have recommended to my executive team that each one of them read this book. I know I did not catch everything the first time around, and will be reading the book a second time with a yellow highlighter in hand.

Sara Lost and Found follows main character Sara, and her older sister Anna through the many struggles of the foster care system.As described by Castleman herself, this book is inspired by actual events that happened to her as a child of parental abandonment and her journey through foster care systems.With that in mind, I felt this book beautifully explicates a very difficult subject matter to young readers, allowing insight and understanding of what it's really like to have your life shaken, and the compassion and love that defines sisterhood. Every page in this book is loaded with meaning and Castleman's style of writing solicits discussion into the deeper symbolism of the text.I personally loved this book and would suggest it to teachers and parents who really want to help develop their children's sympathy towards those around them.

Tough read. Well written as I felt such empathy for the girls. Glad it ended the way it did though it could easily have gone another way

Sara, age 10 and her sister Sister Anna, age 12 are abandoned by their parents. Their mother left home with barely a goodbye and their father was is in jail and struggles with drug addiction. Soon the sisters, despite their pleas, are placed in foster care. Sara, although younger, protects her older sister who is fragile from all of the trauma she has been through and we learn that this is their second time through the foster care system.Although the author, with her clear and crisp writing, allows us to feel the sisters intense pain over their losses and beautifully describes the conflict that Sara goes through as she realizes that her sister needs more help than she can give, I found it hard to fully immerse myself in the story. All I could think was that I have never heard or seen the social welfare system work as well as in this book. As a social worker I have seen hundred's of children go through the foster care system and it does not look like this. It is possible to have one good foster parent but I have not seen any kids go through the foster system (especially twice) and have such caring, astute, loving adults in their lives. Being in foster care is hard, and often borders on its own kind of neglect so it just felt surreal to read this story. So, three stars because of the portraits of two sisters who love each other, for a story that conveys the sadness and trauma of severe neglect but hampered by the picture perfect account of the foster system. Thank you to Netgalley and Simon and Schuster for allowing me to review this book for an honest opinion.

Their mama left them a while ago and their daddy leaves them for long stretches at a time. The two girls know not to answer the door if anyone comes knocking and they know how to survive when the food runs out. They let their imaginations take control as they chew on stolen paper towels. These towels become a juicy cheeseburgers and long succulent hot dogs; it’s something that they trained their mind to do as they chew on the dry bits of cloth. The girls have each other as their mama told them to take care of each other and they can do just that.Their story broke my heart. It seemed to begin when mama had been arrested for DUI and the girls were placed in separate foster homes. This separation broke Anna. The happy, fun- loving Anna returned to her sister Sara, broken and withdrawn with marks on her arms. She would not speak about what happened to her inside the walls of her foster home. The girls have had other experiences with foster families, some negative and some positive but their favorite place to be, is with the Silverman’s. They were grandparents to them. Daddy tries to be a good father but the bottle always calls for him and he answers, leaving him in shambles. He picks himself up, pays the price and tries to undo the damage that he has caused and starts over again. The bottle rules his world. The girls know the routine and with mother gone, they would rather stay home alone than be placed in foster care.Home alone, the girls are startled when police and Child Services come to their door. Sneaking out, the girls take to the streets. They are welcomed at the Silverman’s, their first stop; a stop the girls wished would be their last. I loved the warmth and the gentleness that this relationship bestowed. Their father is in jail and the girls must be placed in temporary foster care so they are now moved to another home. In their new temporary home, the parents try to provide a loving environment and the girls try to adjust to their new home. Anna has difficulties, she lashes out and they are moved sooner than originally planned. I hated to see these children moved as if they were items instead of people with feelings and emotions. I realize that this is what happens in foster care, children being moved around but it was hard reading about the emotions these children were feeling. The girls just wanted to go home with their father where they had a routine, a routine that was familiar and comfortable for them but was not ideal for them. These children needed stability and love and someone to provide that for them. The title speaks for itself with Sara and as for Anna, she needed someone to help her overcome the issues that she was confronting so she could be successful. I really enjoyed this novel. I liked how it touched on foster care and the children who are affected by it.

Sara Lost and Found is an enjoyable, adventurous, and insightful book for children ages 10 to 99. As a family psychotherapist, I will highly recommend Sara Lost and Found to adoptive and foster parents as a guide to help them understand the trauma that is unique to foster and adopted children. In addition, I often work with adults in helping them re-parent their abusive pasts, and Sara Lost and Found will make a wonderful companion for these adults, who are on their transformational journey of healing from their childhoods. Also, I highly recommend this book to children who share a similar path to either Sara or Anna, and highly recommend it to children who would like to understand the "road' of a child whose path may have been different from theirs. Thus, I view Sara Lost and Found to fit into a number of populations and would rate it a "must read"! I also highly recommend that Virginia Castleman creates public readings of her book.
