The scientist, on the other hand, would say categorically no. Masson and McCarthy do a wonderful job in showing the possibility that animals may have and feel emotions as well.We are treated to numerous examples of the full range of emotions that humans feel. Stories of elephants showing happiness at finding them, or gorillas able to express their feelings through sign language. Love in birds and justice in chimpanzees. Each example is very short with not much further explanation, but they do seem to be clear examples that illustrate beautifully the expression of emotions.But this is the small downside as well, because this isn't really a scientific book explaining answers to theories, but is rather a treatise for the need of scientific research. I think for good reason it could be dangerous to assume that animals feel the same or similar emotions simply because we could be projecting our own feelings and emotions through our interpretation. Or simply put: anthropomorphism. The second to last chapter did just this as the authors theorized the possibility of animals worshiping the sun or, even worse, humans. When a lion eats young cubs, either their own or another litter's cubs, they theorized that the lioness "hates waste, or cleans up all messes her cubs make, as part of her love". Or even better that the mother lioness ate her dead cub because she wanted may have wanted "to feel closer to her dead offspring when it was a part of her again". Unfortunately, as the last few chapters of any book usually are, the chapter stands out and points directly at the very negative aspect of anthropomorphism and the negative ideas that can spawn from applying human feelings or logic on to animals.Aside from the second to last chapter I think that Masson and McCarthy did a wonderful job in showing that there does need to be some sort of research done to further our understanding of animals. After all, why are humans so arrogant to believe that we are unique in feeling emotions? Why must we be the center of the universe and there be no intelligent life on earth except humans and that humans are the only intelligent life in the universe? We were certain that the earth was flat, that the sun revolved around the earth, and that the bible should be accepted as literal truth. All of those assumptions were wrong, so why not the notion that animals do not have feelings be wrong? I would recommend if for nothing else but to read about the wonderful lives of so many different animals.4 stars.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would definitely recommend it to those seeking a great perspective on animal emotions. The author thoroughly impressed me with the extensive amount of research he completed and the wide variety of sources that he referenced. He alluded to studies completed by Jane Goodall, detailed language projects involving apes and Alex (the famous talking African Gray parrot), and spoke about service animals, among other topics. This gave the book a strong backbone of credibility upon which to rest.Dr. Masson also covered a wide variety of emotions that might exist in animals, including love, fear, altruism, anger, etc. He additionally gave an opinion on anthropomorphism, which I believe is extremely important when discussing the topic of animal emotions, which probably differ in varying degrees from our own.I only have a couple of criticisms about the book. First of all, it is presented in a somewhat disorganized fashion. It seems like topic after topic is flung at the reader with no strong organization to the material. Also, the book never comes to some kind of conclusion about what science should do to research animal emotions. I believe there should have at least been some suggestion, in light of the fact that the author criticized science for not having focused on this subject enough.All in all, the book is worth reading and pondering over. Perhaps it is appropriate for someone to start with the questions so that others are enticed into questing for answers.

I like these guidebooks. I borrowed the Kauai one from my brother when I went there, then bought this one the first time I visited the Big Island. I loaned the Big Island book out and it was never returned, so I bought it again for my next trip. I even bought the Maui one even though I've been there several times.I think the best parts of these books are the detailed instructions on how to get to some less-traveled areas. You have a chance to see some of the things you might not find in other guidebooks. The author is a resident and tells it more from a local's perspective as opposed to a tourist. If beach time is your thing, most beaches have detailed descriptions of location, facilities, (seasonal) surf conditions, crowds, etc. It even gives instruction on how to get to some of the hard to reach beaches that some resorts or landowners don't want you to access (remember, there are no "private" beaches). You might piss off some people, but even as a tourist you have the right to access the beach.The restaurant section is also pretty good. The author gives the "ono" (tasty) mark if they find the food to be really good or a really good deal, but that's all a matter of opinion. It would be impossible to cover every single restaurant on each island, but it does a surprisingly thorough job. Even giving reviews to hard to find food stands (the Makena Grill on Maui comes to mind; never would have found that on my own). Restaurant locations are divided up by region and it's a lot quicker than Yelping everything.Overall, I think these are the best guidebooks that I've ever used going anywhere, hence the five stars. The language can be a little informal and some attempts at humor come off as a bit cheesy, but very helpful nonetheless. A great reference guide. Bring it on your travels around the island. Unless you're staying for months, pick and choose the things you want to do most as opposed to rushing to get in as much stuff as you can. Have a relaxing trip and come back later if there's still stuff you wanted to do.

This book was difficult to use while in Hawaii as it was laid out for reading but not for using. The only reason I gave it two stars was because it was better than having nothing before our trip and because we found a Black Sand beach that not even the locals believe exists (nobody was there but us).The BAD:What we found when we arrived was that most of the locations mentioned in the book did not have addresses (it did not occur to us until we actually tried to find them) and we had to look them up in Google anyway. After a full week of "fumbling around" with this book we decided to visit the "Black Sand" Beach on the West side of the island just north of Kona. There were 2 reasons we were skeptical:1) this book led us astray several times looking for something that was badly marked, not well defined and with no address2) the locals all told us that no such beach existed.So, we followed the directions to a national park with a road that really does need a 4-wheel drive vehicle (we had a 2-wheel drive rental but took it very slow) and aver driving 1.4 miles on this very bad road we came upon a nice regular beach. We were told that to the north (left) was a White sand beach but there is NO Black Sand beach on this side of the island. Again, taking a chance, we walked 40 minutes south where nobody, and I mean nobody, else was within eye sight or ear shot and we came across a small Black Sand beach (calling it a beach is a stretch) but we have pictures of our feet in the sand and it was actually there. After 5 minutes we walked 40 minutes back to the car proud that we found a beach not even the locals know about.

It would be foolish to make a trip to Hawaii without consulting this guide first. You couldn't possibly know the nuances in the climate changes from place to place and time to time, along with other seriously important details without this guide. For instance, I would never think to ask details about the type of helicopter I would be flying in if I were considering a helicopter tour. Can you talk to the pilot during the tour? Will the glare on the glass prevent you from getting great pictures during the flight? Which helicopter company has the best equipment? Before looking through this book, I think I would have let the price be my guide. Not wise! This is better, and I don't think there's another guide like this either. I shopped it. This guide tells you about the best ways to get around and stay comfortably on your budget, where to see beaches in privacy, and how to avoid the typical tourist traps. The book is well designed, separating East, West, North & South so that you can distinguish the Hawaiian places from one another and have a pretty good idea of where you are when a name comes up. If you read the whole thing, you'll think you're fluent in Hawaiian. In addition, it's great fun to read while you dream about your bucket list vacation. Great pictures too!

We have used the 7th edition for two trips to the Big Island and will use the 8th for our next coming up. I have the 7th on my phone and will cross reference between the two for day trips where I can only use the phone. The series is a one of a kind travel guide and sets the bar for all others to achieve. Doughty and his crew have really done their homework and the guides are written in a fresh, non boring, conversational style, inserting his sense of humor and personal Aloha for the islands throughout. In my opinion, this is the best guide for the Big Island, bar none. All the others I have purchased stay home when we go. Every aspect of your trip is covered whether you be a blatant pay for all tourist, a do it yourself adventurist, or one caught somewhere in between.

Meredith Laurence, the Blue Jean Chef, has worked in numerous capacities and settings in the food world. After graduating from the New England Culinary Institute, she first honed her skills in two Michelin-rated restaurants in Les-Baux-de-Provence, France. What a beautiful book! Lots of wonderful pictures and many great recipes I can't wait to try in my new air fryer. I know that I'll have fun adapting many of them to suit my needs, too, as there is a wealth of basic knowledge here for the novice air fryer owner.

I bought an air fryer a while ago and need a book to know how to use it. I have read more than 10 air fryer cookbooks thru Kindle Unlimited. This book is the best of all. Great recipes, tips, and photos. I highly recommend.

This is a GREAT book if you have an air fryer. It has a lot of information including but not limited to comparison charts for heating and time control. If you want to cook something store bought she has it covered. If you want to cook something frozen, like frozen French fries, she will suggest to you how to do it. With this book you don't have to re-invent the wheel every time you want to cook something. Without hesitation I would recommend this cook book.

I just received a small 3.7 qt Air Fryer as a gift. I would not have purchased one for myself as I did not think it would be something I would use much as I do not fry anything anyway. It actually has been more useful to me than I anticipated. I had downloaded a couple of Kindle air fryer cookbooks, but they were not really useful for the small round type of air fryer that I have. I normally do not buy cookbooks as I rarely follow a recipe completely. I am blessed to be a fairly good cook that does not have to rely on cookbooks unless baking something that requires a recipe with accurate measurements. I checked this book out from my local library prior to purchasing it so I could determine if the book would be useful to me. It is a fairly basic cookbook with recipes that are not difficult. I will modify some recipes to suit my personal preferences (make my own bread dough versus purchased dough), but the recipes are actually designed for my type of air fryer. I can use the book as a basis for developing other recipes also. I felt that the book was useful enough that it was worth purchasing a copy for myself. The majority of the recipes show a picture. There are no nutritional values for most of the recipes. Most of the recipes are healthier versions of normally fried foods except for the dessert section of course. The recipes do not require a lot of strange or unusual ingredients. Most of the ingredients would normally be found in a well stocked pantry.

I use this cookbook practically every time I plug in my air fryer. The fried fish comes out spectacular w/ a coating of crushed salt & vinegar chips, & the coconut shrimp rivals Red Lobster's! Desserts, entrees, sides--I've tried so many of her recipes, & adapted others. This is an indispensable book if you have that latest new kitchen appliance.

Meredith Laurence always delivers what is promised. I've made a number of recipes and have been very pleased. Her introduction and suggestions are very useful. You know when you're reading this book that a culinary teacher has written it. Very precise. I love it! Don't miss trying the Zucchini Fries! Even good reheated the next day in the air fryer.

Finally, an air fryer cookbook with photos! Pictures speak a thousand words. I've purchased several air fryer cookbooks and they had either black and white pictures or poor quality pictures. I bought them out of desperation because I wanted recipes to use with my air fryer. This book is great and I've tried several recipes and all have turned out very tasty. I highly recommend this book.

This is the best. I have tried chicken fingers. The Spicy London broil is absolutely delicious. Cauliflower cooked in here is terrific. It is a fun appliance. Also fun to try different things. Homemade French fries are so good. I haven't made anything from this book that I didn't like. Great addition to any air fryer. Thanks Meredith.

I love this cookbook! The recipes are simple and they turn out delicious. I made the parmesan cauliflower and maple balsamic glazed salmon for dinner last night and it was perfect! I also made the blooming onion and I was amazed at how easy it was, except I have to hone my knife skills. Next up are the fish tacos and salmon burgers. Thank you!

First, I will state that I am a lovecraft fan, to the point of having written lovecraftian fan-fic,So, of course I have nothing but praise.And I will state when they say complete, they mean complete. I have long since had a full collection of everything lovecraft wrote, so when I got this, I was expecting merely the usual "Complete Works" which never include all the collaborations.Oh, you haven't read the collaborations? Then here's your chance. They are ALL here... Except... again... Ashes with CM Eddy. No doubt once more due to Eddy's grandson refusing to allow publication, AGAIN. (The Man appears obsessed with preventing his grandfathers SS with HPL from seeing publication.)Nor will you find Derleth's "posthumous" Lovecraftian style stories, which while derivative of HPL's work, cannot in any sense be claimed to have been written or co-written by HPL. (Derleth just could not fill HP's shoes, no matter how hard he tried. But he can be thanked for keeping HPL in publication and in the public eye for most of last century.)So, if you are new to HPL, or a die hard fan, you will definitely find it almost tells the truth with its title, and you can't really blame the publishers for Eddy's grandson being an obstinate fool.

Great collection of Lovecraft's works. This is the most expansive collection I've found for an unimaginably cheap price (at the time of writing costing 99 cents). The audiobooks are a bit hit and miss, but for the price is a welcome addition. Just as a note, the audiobooks are found via a link to a google drive on the second-to-last page of the book.

His stories are dark, always with supernatural element to them, following a somewhat constant theme of cosmic races that somehow found their way into our planet. If you like this mixture of horror, supernatural, and alien life forms, you will like Lovecraft.I like his style - his tales develop in a deliberately slow cadence, where information is delivered in small doses at a very regular pace, which makes it hard to set a story aside once you start it. His English is polished and elegant, not your 8th grade level prose you find in many authors today; personally, I appreciate reading intelligently written, well composed sentences. If you are a dialog kind of person, be aware that are barely any in his books. Having said that, his descriptions of places, people and monsters are vivid, greatly stimulating your imagination.A few tales are particularly good - "The Dreams in the Witch House" and "At the Mountain of Madness" are the ones I like the best. I have to say, however, that this is not a book to read in one sitting; after some time, the stories and the themes become a bit repetitive; I usually read anywhere between five or ten stores, set the book aside to read something else, and when I'm in the mood, I go back to Lovecraft again.

When I was looking over the choices of Lovecraft ebook collections, what I wanted to know was what each version contained. Some of the earlier reviews on this page clearly applied to earlier editions. A note in the ebook says "...consists purely of his mature and singly authored fiction. It does not include his juvenilia, collaborative works, poems, letters, or nonfiction."As of May 30, 2018, the Kindle edition does contain a table of contents with links.
