This book was written by a classmate of mine from the Reno High School class of 1957. I didn't know Irene well until around 2005 when she visited the town I now live in and we visited for several hours. She told me at that time she was writing a book about her experiences in Pakistan in the 1960s. Having dreamed about writing a book for years, as probably all avid readers do, I admired her for actually working on a book. So when her book came out this year on Kindle, I ordered it right away. It blew me away. It had been 40 plus years since she had gone through this experience but she made it sound so fresh, with her wonderful descriptions of places, people, events, feelings, along with much history of Pakistan. I was also amazed that she was only 22 years old when she arrived in Pakistan and, yet, she was so capable, strong, flexible, inventive, and confident. I don't think there are many 22 year old women who could have accomplished as much as she did for her family, friends, and community in a strange country that was so far from home. I admire her so much more now. Irene is a wonderful woman and I thank her for sharing this adventurous time in her life. The Kindle edition does contain some errors, i.e. punctuation mistakes, a word left out here and there, etc., but these should not detract from the overall delightful experience of her memoir. I highly recommend Irene's book.An American Woman in Pakistan: Memories of Mangla Dam

I was fortunate to live and attend school in Baral Colony while my father worked on the dam with countless others. As stated in this wonderful recounting, this job, this place, those people have left an indelible mark on my heart. We found lifelong friends and learned about a culture outside our little corner of the world. My experiences during those days of my teenage years, helped shape my life forever. And I,like many others, cried when it was time to go back to the States. I'm forever grateful to Mr. Guy for giving our family this wonderful education, and many thanks to Irene for bringing it all back to life!

I so enjoyed this! While reading, I knew it was written for my mom's sense of her time there and not me, the teenager they brought. It allowed me to remember so much! It also was the reason I made my husband accept a job in Venezuela! Great book Irene!

I am reading this book because I know the author. We attended the same high school. I admire her for leaving home and going to a completely different culture. She did this at a very young age. She really handled it well. Good job Irene.

Irene writes in such detail about life in Pakastan in the 60's. There's a good balance of cultural information combined with the nitty gritty of living in a foreign country with two small children without all the amenities she was used to in the States. The reader is brought right into the everyday life of "foreigners" living in a different country.

A fascinating story of life in Pakistan. Irene's descriptions of the sights & smells transport you there. Nice pictures are included too.

An excellent memoir describing a woman's experience dealing with a totally different culture at a time in our history when very little was knownabout Americans living in Pakistan.

Having lived in Pakistan during the time period covered in the the book, I LOVED it! I thought that Irene did an excellent job, and totally recommended the book to everyone! A wonderful read!

The Red Menace starts with Crossbones and the Red Skull’s daughter Sin cutting a swath of terror across the Midwest with Captain America and SHIELD agent Sharon Carter on their heels. There’s also Bucky the Winter Soldier working the shadows. The Red Skull also makes a comeback after his reported death. In the middle there’s a 65th Anniversary special for Cap with a throwback story to WWII with Bucky and the Howling Commandos. You would expect this to be something special but it’s drawn by two guys that look like they doodled in high school and never got any better. It’s another sign of how Marvel let its artwork slip down to the depths after the 80s. Thankfully the rest of the Red Menace is draw a lot better. The Red Menace was part of a trilogy by Ed Brubaker that included the Winter Soldier and the Death of Captain America. They tied together all the threads of Cap, Bucky and the Red Skull in what was one of Marvel’s major comic series of the 2000s. That’s actually a bit of a negative for this volume, because even though its the middle of the story it reads just like a primer for what the real story would become. One could read the other two without this one and not really miss out.

Book in new condition, well-packed. Shipping was slow, but I was pleasantly surprised at how very responsive to my disappointment. Daily Deals USA was eager to make things right, and I am certain that I will deal with them again, only being cognizant that the shipping may be slow - but also recognizing what a great price and quality product they offer. Additionally, the story is another excellent installment in the ongoing saga of the First Avenger - no, really; for me, Captain America was an Avenger from almost the beginning. I remember buying and reading the book where the original Avengers discovered Cap frozen in the ocean and revived him. Captain America can sometimes seem a little corny and old-fashioned in his values and upright forthrightness, but the world today needs quite a bit more of his approach to become part of day-to-day living. This story, along with the Winter Soldier saga, the Death of.. and so on are all well written updates on Cap's life story, and they explore mature themes in a mature manner. Great storytelling and artwork. I can't wait to continue re-discovering Steve Rogers et al, and encourage you to do the same if your tastes include a realistic look at a fantasy character's life behind, beyond, and without the mask...

This book was good. Second part of the Winter Soilder saga. Crossbones uses all means nessacary to make Sin remember she is a cold blooded killer and Red Skull daugther. Pretty much beats the crap out of her. When she remembers they go on a killing spree. Captian America and agent -13 go after them. They are also looking for Bucky. Red Skull is still alive. As we learned in the first book he is trapped in Lukin body. They are both sharing a body. They continue to play a high stakes cat and mouse game with Captian America . Did not need the flashback story with Bucky, Cap and the Howlings. They could have summed it up in a few flashbacks. Overall a good book

I really enjoyed this as the next chapter in the Winter Soldier story leading up to Civil War. Brubaker does a nice job of giving Captain America, Sharon Carter, Bucky Barnes, and even Crossbones and Sin real depth of character while telling a compelling story. It was also fun to see a team-up with Union Jack, Cap's British counterpart.Overall a great buy, and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the first volume. You don't need a lot of background beyond Vol. 1 to get on board with Marvel's most legendary super hero in this series.

"Red Menace" is a great follow up to "The Winter Soldier" stroyline. Ed Brubaker continues to add a ton of depth to characters that, for a while, seemed one dimensional. Unlike the first book, Nick Fury does not show up in this one which I felt detracted from the quality yet at the same time added a sense of mystery. While the build up may seem like the villian of this volume is Crossbones it actually is Red Skull yet again. So if you are looking for a cool Crossbones story this would be a good book to get but just dont expect him to be a huge part of the story.

Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting's legendary run contineus. With The Red Menace, the Winter Soldier's story continues as the bad guys make their move. This book inspired the wonderful Captain America Winter Soldier movie and continues an amazing run of stories featuring Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, and friends. Highest possible recommendation. This is a great read.

Captain America Red Menace Is much better then the 2 part Winter Soldier story-arc and with a good story and solid art Captain America: Red Menace

This run continues to be excellent. If you are looking for a good read, read the Winter Solder and then this volume. It does a great jab leading up to Civil War and showing why Cap would be opposed to it as well.

Okay, you know who you are. You're the passenger who always chooses a window seat, so you can gaze out during the flight, looking on as the world on the ground passes smoothly beneath you. Maybe you like traveling at night, so you can see the lights of cities large and small twinkling below, reminding you that the world is a series of lights. Maybe you wish the inflight entertainment monitors would show the takeoffs and landings so you could see what the pilots can see. And even though you might find it difficult to put yourself completely in the hands of those at the airplane's controls, you love to fly. It's for those fliers - and I'm including myself - that Mark Vanhoenacker has written "Skyfaring: A Journey with a Pilot".Mark Vanhoenacker is American born and raised and is pilot with British Airways. Now in his 40's, he took up piloting somewhat later in life than most; he didn't become a commercial pilot until he was 29. But he had always loved flying and airplanes and traveling, and had known from an early age that he wanted to fly commercially. Vanhoenacker has flown two plane types in his career; an Airbus which flew the "short" routes in and out of London, and the 747, the plane for long flights. London to Tokyo, London to Cape Town, London to Mumbai, to name a few."Skyfaring" is not a conventional book about flying airplanes. Vanhoenacker takes the reader on voyages through the air while talking about both the mundane and the magic of flying. Dividing the book into a series of chapter, some of which are "Lift", "Water", "Encounters", and "Return", the author takes the reader up in the air with him. "Encounters" is about the connections - both personal and job-related - that Vanhoenacker makes while flying. It's one of the best chapters because he talks about meeting old friends on planes and on layovers, and making new ones who he will see...whenever. He also makes the comparison between travel by water and travel by air. Many of the terms of both ships and airplanes are similar. Even "souls" - who are generally referred to when a plane crashes or a ship sinks - is used in the same way.But most of what Mark Vanhoenacker writes about is the "magic" of piloting a huge plane full of people, whether traveling for business or pleasure. So, if you've ever sat in your seat in a plane and wondered if the guy flying it has the same feeling of wonderment you have, yes, he probably does. This is one of the best work of non-fiction I've read this year. Buy it and savor it.

As an aircraft freak I am biased about any book on aviation, particularly one by a B747 long haul pilot and although this book may not appeal to everyone, I loved it. There were times when I would have preferred more technical details about how things worked rather than the poetic descriptions of what the clouds and rivers look like from 37,000 feet, but this is probably being picky. There were also some of the descriptions that reminded me of Australian author/pilot Owen Zupp. So if you take my aviation freak bias into consideration, it is a book that I wholeheartedly recommend.

I don't usually do reviews, but this was truly an extraordinary book and absolutely well worth the time. I have always loved aircraft and although I have never flown a plane, was, for a time, an avid flight sim enthusiast. I don't fly/travel much, sadly, just a yearly trip to the west coast. What stood out to me was the many times, many many times, I said to myself "gee, I have felt the exact same way as the author" regardless of the many topics, his excellent exposition resonated with me !000%. His sense of awe looking at the planet below and descriptions of the mountains, deserts, oceans, populated areas (few and far between) was quite moving. When I was finished with the book, I was sad because it was done ... even though he told a complete (IMHO) story ... I wanted to continue reading .... YES, it was that WELL WRITTEN and very ENJOYABLE. I would recommend this book to you without reservation .... you'll be very very happy you read it, regardless of your interest in aviation or flying.

Essential reading for a certain kind of person. I'm an engineer that works on global networks. I fly over 100k a year. I long ago passed 1M miles in the air. I struggle to explain to people what it means to exist , literally, at some point, every place on earth. If not on it, over it.Mark Vanhoenacker does this in a remarkably observant and emotional way. Few of us will ever pilot a long haul 747, but a lot of us will sit in the passenger cabin. Spend, cumulatively, years, around the globe, and come to know the planet and it's people as one place.I used to think being in the ISS (International Space Station) was the way to see Earth as a whole, but it's really flying at 35,000 ft and being on the ground that accomplishes that. Some nights I fall asleep thinking about what everyone I know is doing, across 24 time zones, and it's a joy: Good night world. Good night everyone. This is a beautiful world we live in.I would be hard pressed to express this to anyone, but Mr Mark Vanhoenacker does this

If you enjoyed "Crime and Punishment" by Dostoevsky, you may enjoy Skyfaring. This is both a testament to the author's skill and the reason you may end up abandoning the book after the first couple of chapters. This book is not so much about aviation as about the author. Most of the prose is dedicated to his personal experience... not even flying, but living: the childhood memories, his sense of time, place, purpose of life and so on.As other reviewers have noticed, there is very little about technical aspects of flying, although some random bits are unexpectedly well covered in great detail, comparable even to textbooks: for example he goes into explaining indicated vs actual airspeed.I actually managed to read all of it, but not because I was enjoying the endless self-reflection of the author, but because I was looking for a specific answer to the obvious question of how did he manage to become a major airline pilot so quickly and so late in life? There are myriads of private pilots with multiple ratings racking up their CFL hours in hopes of joining a regional airline some day, but in his case it was more like "I decided to become a pilot at 26 and here I am flying a jet on international routes 4 years later". Perhaps the job market for pilots was better in the UK in 2004?

This will provide a really high level overview of the subjects, and provide a reasonable amount of required math for proof of concepts. I will say it takes a personal extra step to further and master the complexities of individual components. The only con I have is with some of the images. I'm not sure if they can be updated with higher resolution and clearer images. In my opinion they sometimes are just black outlines of a turbo pump, haha. The next edition really needs to update these diagrams and charts.

Excellent updated version of NASA's well known SP-125.It's true that other books such as Space Propulsion Analysis and Design and especially Rocket Propulsion Elements can also provide sufficient overviews of the theory behind rocket propulsion, including liquid rocket propulsion. However, what this provides in addition is an exposition of the practical knowledge and everyday details required in turning theoretical rockets from general specifications on paper to practical working implementations. These practical descriptions and tips are supplemented by the many pictures scattered throughout the book which serve to exemplify far more effectively than the illustrations in other rocket propulsion books I have read.My only complaint about the book is of course that it is in Imperial, rather than SI units. But having to make conversions of equations and constants from this book is a small price to pay for the wealth of in-depth knowledge contained within.

The other reviewers are correct when they say the text is worth the money. However the copy I received had pages that where wrinkled where they formed the spine of the book. The first and last 20 pages or so where effected. It feels as if the stitching was applied while the pages where not completely flat, resulting in a wave in the paper as its attached to the spine. The book cracked as it opened because the pages flexed (oil canned at the spine) as you turned them. Disappointing because it was carefully shrink wrapped when I got it.Of course Amazon quickly replaced it but the next specimen off the publisher assembly line was far worse, all the pages where effected, and in the end it is probably the 'replacement' I will sent back.I still recommend this book, its just that good.

I got this for one of my kids, who was young, and wanted to know why it was difficult to make rockets. For this purpose, the book is great. It shows you several aspects of the design problems. You can see this from the table of contents - it tries very hard to cover as much ground as is sensible. The diffculty for European readers is that the units are all imperial, that is, Gallons, Pounds, feet, inches, and so forth. This makes the numerical details - a sense of scale for what is being discussed - quite inaccesible for most of us over here. It's worth noting that also lead to the downfall of at least one recent space mision to Mars.Remarks like "its not rocket science" can certainly be shown as having a truthful sort of origin by looking at this. To "do" anything with this book, you would absolutely have to develop further and deeply in the following disciplines;1. Chemistry2. Metallurgy3. Thermodynamics4. Mechanics5. Experience with CAD, esp. simulation with solid and liquid state systems.6. Maths7. Electronics,8. Reliability...9. ???I wonder if any single mind could get round all of these, possibly, but you would be pretty lucky to get the chance nowadays. Education isn't cheap.I don't think, though that there is any harm in wanting to get as close to this as you like. The book is truly wonderful, almost a work of art, and even if jobs in this area are scarce, this has got to be worthwhile. Read this, do the background study, get a degree or two, and you may eventually get into industrial plant design, maybe even medical electronics, aerospace, or something. Why not? The world would be a better place if more people would dream a bit and aspire to do the hard stuff. I am full of admiration for people who did better than I did and are working in these kinds of fields.I'm going to get a few more books in this series, though I have to say, I'm a bit nervous about ordering books with titles including the words "missile propulsion". We live in troubled times.

This is a fine book for the rocket scientist wannabe. The book is really great, but only scratches the surface since it does not "reveal" all the details behind the art of designing liquid rockets. I was surprised to hear from many Russian specialists that this book brings "stupid solutions" (in their own words) to such simple an "elementary" problems - an example of this being the resonance igniter sketch shown on page 125 - "it simply doesn't work" they said. Well, the fact is that Russian books are much more detailed. And although they are written in Russian, it is not quite difficult to understand the equations and the design criteria. In short: this book is a must have for any serious rocket designer and you should buy it - but don't forget to grab some "foreign" literature - take a look at "Gakhun - Construction and Design of LPRE (in Russian)", it will tell you a whole different story.

Review

A New York Times Editors' ChoiceShortlisted for the 2019 Lionel Gelber Prize“A brilliant and disturbing analysis, which should be read by anyone wishing to understand the political crisis currently engulfing the world.” —Yuval Noah Harari, author of Sapiens“Combining topical reporting with delvings into the history of ideas and some political-philosophical musing in the author’s own voice, this relatively short book covers a vast canvas. . . . A roller-coaster world calls for a news editor’s skill in processing facts and a philosopher’s ability to dissect ideologies. Snyder has both.” —The Economist“The Road to Unfreedom is a rich and complex book, punctuated by epigrams that cast heroic clarity upon the disturbing distance the United States has already traveled to the sinister destination in Snyder’s title. If some of Snyder’s assessment seems overstated or premature, he can powerfully reply: He has perceived more accurately than his critics what has already happened. He has earned the right to be heard on what may lie ahead.” —David Frum, The Atlantic“The Road to Unfreedom offers a brief, potent and carefully documented history of Vladimir Putin’s consolidation of power in Russia, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.” —The Chicago Tribune“We are living in dangerous times, Timothy Snyder argues forcefully and eloquently in his new book. . . . To understand Putin, Snyder argues persuasively, you must understand his ideas. . . . The Road to Unfreedom is a good wake-up call.” —Margaret MacMillan, The New York Times Book Review“Deluged by ugly headlines, readers need books that force us to pause, step back and understand how America arrived at this chaotic moment. One of the best such books this year is historian Timothy Snyder’s essential, penetrating look at how toxic ideas, autocratic power and fake news spread from Russia into Ukraine, Western Europe and now to the White House. At a time when the politics of apocalypse haunt American democracy, Snyder helps unpack how we got here—and, maybe, how we can get out.” —Lucas Wittmann, TIME"Snyder’s horror at what has happened in Russia—and at the risks to the US and Europe—gives his writing energy and passion. He is unsparing in his indictment of Putin’s Russia. . . .But he is also clear-eyed about the weaknesses of American society that have made the US vulnerable to Russian intervention and domestic populism." —Gideon Rachman, The Financial Times"Essential reading. . . . Chilling and unignorable." —The Guardian“Of all the books that seek to explain the current crisis of Western liberal democracy, none is more eloquent or frightening than Snyder’s The Road to Unfreedom.” —Foreign Affairs“Brilliant. . . . Bleak and eloquent. . . . Snyder’s account of the Trump ascendancy, and the many helping hands given from Russia, is vividly and insightfully told.” —Edward Lucas, The Times (London)Praise for Timothy Snyder’s On Tyranny   “We are rapidly ripening for fascism. This American writer leaves us with no illusions about ourselves.” —Svetlana Alexievich, Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature   “A slim book that fits alongside your pocket Constitution and feels only slightly less vital. . . . Grounded in history yet imbued with the fierce urgency of what now.” —Carlos Lozada, The Washington Post   “Snyder reasons with unparalleled clarity, throwing the past and future into sharp relief. He has written the rare kind of book that can be read in one sitting but will keep you coming back to help regain your bearings.” —Masha Gessen, author of The Future Is History   “As Timothy Snyder explains in his fine and frightening On Tyranny, a minority party now has near-total power and is therefore understandably frightened of awakening the actual will of the people.” —Adam Gopnik, The New Yorker   “Snyder knows this subject cold. . . . It is impossible to read aphorisms like ‘post-truth is pre-fascism’ and not feel a small chill about the current state of the Republic.” —Daniel W. Drezner, The New York Times Book Review“Snyder draws an unbroken line between the darkest events and personalities of the past and the ones that confront us in the here and now. . . . As he did in On Tyranny, Snyder argues that we are facing a challenge of potentially catastrophic proportions, but he refuses to despair.” –Jonathan Kirsch, Jewish Journal

As a professor of history Timothy Snyder has written extensively on authoritarian and totalitarian movements in the twentieth century. The Road to Unfreedom is one of his briefer works, but an extremely important one nonetheless. Snyder's most important contribution to the growing set of volumes analyzing why the 2016 US Presidential election went so catastrophically wrong is to set the events of that year in their proper historical context, reminding us once again that history not only repeats itself, it sometimes whacks us over the head and screams "Why didn't you pay attention?"Snyder spends the first section of his book detailing the differences between the politics of inevitability, in which progress is believed to be unstoppable and democracy and capitalism the certain future for all; and the politics of eternity, in which progress is temporary and history is cyclical, favoring elites and abandoning any concern for the masses. He identifies the Russian philosopher Ivan Ilyin as a high priest of the politics of eternity. An anti-Bolshevik who was exiled from Soviet Russia in 1922, Ilyin called for a Fascist counter-revolution and portrayed Russia as the innocent victim of foreign intriguers. Although Ilyin died in the 1950s his writings were to have enormous influence on the Russian politicians of the 2010s who oversaw their country's descent into kleptocracy, including Vladimir Putin himself. It was thanks to Ilyin's influence that Putin took steps to destabilize the regions he perceived to be Russia's enemies, primarily the European Union and the United States.Snyder spends a great deal of time detailing the events of 2014-15 in Ukraine, which the Russians invaded while denying they were doing so, spreading confusion with the assistance of the government-controlled Russian media as well as more reputable Western outlets like the Guardian and the Nation. I found these chapters most eye-opening because like most Westerners I remember being extremely confused over what exactly was taking place between Ukraine and Russia. As I read, I realized that in many respects what happened to Ukraine in 2014 was a practice round for what was to occur in the European Union and the United States in 2016. Snyder goes on to expose Russian efforts to influence the Brexit vote in the United Kingdom and the United States. Much of his material here has already been covered, but it's still important to reread it and be forewarned for the future. As I read, I found my memory returning again and again to an old TV mini-series from the 1980s called "Amerika," about a Soviet takeover of the United States. Reading of Kremlin conspiracies and conversations between Russian oligarchs and their European and American stooges making plans to defeat the West I realized that that old series has actually come to fruition thirty years after its broadcast. The Road to Unfreedom ends bleakly, though the last lines from the epilogue does allow some hope: "If we see history as it is, we see our places in it, what we might change, and how we might do better. We halt our thoughtless journey from inevitability to eternity, and exit the road to unfreedom. We begin a politics of responsibility. To take part in its creation is to see a world for a second time. Students of the virtues that history reveals, we become the makers of a renewal that no one can foresee."This is a brief work of less than 300 pages followed by an extensive End notes section. It is one of the most important works concerned Americans and Europeans can read in 2018.

Snyder's book, "The Road to Unfreedom" is daunting. It's jacket has the words "Russia, Europe, America," and that might lead you to believe it covers each country in succession. Instead it covers them in parallel with a lot of emphasis on Russia. You need to know that at the outset. Snyder has terms of his own construction such as the "politics of inevitability" and the "politics of eternity." Reread these very carefully on pages 8 and 9 and dog ear those pages. They are central to the rest of the book. Unfortunately, they are not intuitively clear, never well defined, and referred to often. This is the major flaw of the book.Snyder has a peculiarly insightful analysis of events. It can be both revealing and confusing at the same time. His prose ranges from clear and concise to intertwined and difficult. I had to double back often to track some thoughts (something I almost never have to do). The short ending epilogue is particularly obtuse. All that said, the man has done his homework remarkably well (with help from his grad students). His accumulation of specific facts and his tying them together make the book a compelling read and a punch to the gut. You get insights not found elsewhere. Just three examples...1. The influence of the political philosopher Ivan Ilyn on Putin and contemporary Russia, 2. The truth behind the war in Ukraine especially it's cyber and propaganda elements, 3. The links between Russian oligarchical and criminal money and Donald Trump's business ventures. Snyder makes a strong case that Trump is at best a Russian patsy if not much worse. Trump lovers will gag on the facts he lays out.If you want to get more on Trump and where America is headed, I recommend reading "Trumpocracy" and "Killing Democracy." You may also like Snyder's very short book "On Tyranny." If you get caught up in his idea of the "politics of eternity," you might find "The Fourth Turning" worth reading. It's a bit bizarre, but it espouses a cyclical form of history that complements Snyder's description. This last book has been deemed "Steve Bannon's Bible" by some. All thee books are on Amazon.(Spoiler alert - stop here unless you want to find out more about the content.) There are some inescapable conclusions from the book. Russian media is managed to present the story the government wants presented and bears absolutely no connection to the truth. It is the ultimate in "fake news." This is so blatant that Americans really cannot imagine the breadth and depth of its lies. Russia is actively workjng to destabilize America and Europe in order to bring them down to the economic and undemocratic level of Russia. Since Russia cannot improve due to its kleptocracy and oligarchy, it's only option is to ruin the West. The Russians have financed Trump to cover his failed businesses and massive debts putting him in their pocket. The ties between the government and the oligarchs enable Putin to use them as intermediaries so that support is not directly tied to the government. Hence, "no collusion." Russia back Trump because they realized how destructive his personality and illogical actions would be to U.S. government. Snyder lays out the fact that all of Russia's efforts were for Trump and against Clinton to make that point. America is in an information war for the truth in order to save it's democracy. Fox News and the far left are not helping as both get baited and ensnared by Russia misinformation.

I read BLACK EARTH, and had a high opinion of Snyder. So this seemed like a reasonable choice. It was, mostly, though well over half the book covers territory that will be familiar to readers who have paid some attention to post Cold War politics and policies. The last portion of the book is more current, and truly alarming. Clear and present danger, folks. But it is not just our current crop of deceitful, greedy, underhanded, ignorant, and anti-democratic leaders or insufficiently regulated cybertechnologies that are to blame (though they indeed are to blame). It’s also the voters who enable them. (FACEBOOK, anyone?)I happened to read this the same week I read HOW DEMOCRACIES DIE. Both that book and this one are important books, both sound dire warnings, and I think both should be read. But....not at the same time if you value your mental health.

This book is great. Lange demonstrates his experience and talent as a photographer with beautiful photographs. The point of the book is to give you tips "for taking the best pictures of your life" and it does just that. It doesn't really focus on the technical aspects about photography which makes it different from other photo books and is something I enjoyed. This book is about telling a story with your photographs and capturing those special moments that are constantly disappearing. Lange encourages readers to always keep shooting and look for the in-between moments that make a picture truly memorable. The design of the book is simple, clean, and beautiful and is easy to just flip through or read cover-to-cover. I recommend this book to any photographer looking to capture simple moments of life with a new perspective.

I purchased this book twice - once of myself and once as a gift for a young family member. I read this entire book and still refer back to it often as my skills improve. I particularly like the friendly, engaging tone of the author. He is less about "must have" gear and more about creating photographs with whatever gear you have. He taught me how to look for pictures in any situation and gave simple, practical information to improve the quality of each picture. He demystifies photography - he assumes you do not have an extensive background, yet he imparts knowledge while pulling your skills forward. Plenty of pictures show you exactly what he is teaching. This book reminds you to be creative and have fun.It is easy to understand on your own level. You can absorb the more technical information, or just focus on the simple, straightforward lessons.I was confident purchasing this book for a 13 year old beginner who uses the family's point and shoot camera. I knew she would enjoy the short lessons and fun attitude. And, he is not above taking pictures that are trendy and fun for a younger generation of photography enthusiasts!

In the beginning when you first picked a camera when you didn't know the rules. It was exciting, free and fun. That is what this book is about. When you know enough about your craft, you know when you can break the rules. He insist on natural light and sometimes strange angles. How he becomes one with his subject is worth a study in itself. Dig a bit deeper and consider carefully the simple words he has written.there You will find a wonderful philosophy. So if you have reached a stage in your journey with photography you find yourself at a point where burn out looms, buy this book. The photography is wonderful but his simple approach and love of people is the pot of gold in this book. I have often said that I fall in love two or three times a year, in his case it's every person he photographs.

In a quest to learn more about making good photos, I bought this book. It’s all about taking photos of people, and the author is all about spontaneity. It’s refreshing to hear his stories and read his tips; the author keeps pulling us back to having fun while taking photos, to bringing us back to the moment of snapping pictures. And that’s something I can remind myself to do.Sharing all the author’s amazing photos and reading his tips is worthwhile, too.

I love this book. I am a person who just wants nice pictures. I don't care about technique, but do want something better than a pile of silly selfies. My husband and I travel a lot and I wanted to learn how to enrich our picture taking opportunities so I bought this book. With the information, I was so interested in photography that we actually bought fancy cameras and took a photography class. I've ready the book several times and every time something new catches my attention. It's well written and very well executed. We've both learned a lot from the book and our pictures are definitely better for it.

Eh, not the best photography book I've come across. I'm a photography teacher for elementary through high school aged children and I'm always looking for ways to engage students. My students haven't really bonded with this book or its content.

As a fairly advanced amatuer people photographer, I love books that help generate ways to think outside the box .This book provides it. It's not long, or complex, it's fun. It spurs the imagination and encourages a playful approach to photographing people and life. I really loved George's ongoing excitement at shooting people and he has some great ideas on how to generate energy and fun in the people photography you would shoot. If you need a technical look at people photography, this is not it. if you are looking for inspiration and a way to think outside the box when shooting people, you will enjoy this one. It will probably provide some smiles along the way!

Very simple approach to people photography which has really improved my posed and spontaneous portraits, making for much more natural, emotion charged images.I believe this is especially good for photographers very confident with technical skills, but who need to loosen up a bit, to stop controlling so much and instead catch wonderful moments. The intro explains how the author trained with Annie Leibovitz, and he certainly proved to be a worthy apprentice!
