While the book starts off in a well balanced manner, shattering the laughable modern myths regarding the "unprovoked" nature of the crusade, the West's so called "backwardness" in the Middle Ages and highlights the fact that the Islamic progress was due largely to partially assimilated cultures, many of which were ultimately destroyed, I feel that it really does abandon its objectivity towards the end.The first crusade is presented well, the background, the warriors, the journey, the battles and the outcome are all well documented and the fact that the crusaders basically applied the standard policy of the age at Jerusalem ( just like Saladin did a few years later) really sheds some objective light on this fascinating period. The book presents some other little known facts like the admiration of certain Muslim writers towards the way justice was served in a fair manner in the crusader kingdoms, the military superiority of the West alongside the agricultural advancements of the so called "Dark Ages" that ensured that westerners ate better food than any other group of people at that time.The highlight of the book, ironically, is not the presentation of the crusades but the background and the causes. For some reason, the downright cretinous claims of Voltaire and others who said that Islam was received with enthusiasm in the conquered areas are still popular in the West today. While the Balkan countries, Poland, Hungary still have plenty of reminders of hundreds of years of oppression, raids, child slaves and sex slaves at the hands of the Ottoman Empire, the moronic claims of certain 17th-18th century writers which were living in the most rich and advanced societies in the history of mankind and were surrounded by flourishing arts and sciences but for some reason wanted to ridicule those very societies by raising Islam on a pedestal...these claims still have traction today, and for this reason, books like this one are very healthy.Towards the end, as mentioned above, the book unfortunately abandons its myth shattering purpose and objective attitude and becomes fully apologetic.The 4th crusade in particular is presented as some sort of an accident where the crusaders were placed in an impossible situation and, despite the fact that they didn't want to, they 'had' to sack the most advanced and rich city of the time...no mention of the fact the Venetians basically had been waiting for any excuse to raid Constantinople for a long time. The book mentions the low body count but conveniently ignores the fact that it was the greatest robbery of the age if we consider the total amount of loot that was carried away and ended up in Venice and other places. The book also fails to mention that the Church excommunicated a lot of people after this crusade...No mention of the dubious Northern Crusades or any of the subsequent degenerations of the original idea behind the crusading, the corruption of certain Knight Orders and of the fact that basically that very 4th crusade alongside the Zara fiasco basically ended the age of the knight wars and the beginning of the mercenary age in Europe. This made me drop a few stars off the score...but as mentioned above, it's still a healthy read.

This book is a good beginning history of why Christians first went to fight in the Crusades.On November 27, 1095, Pope Urban II gave a speech graphically detailing the torture, rape, and murder of Christian pilgrims and the defilement of churches and holy places committed by the Turks. “They destroy the altars, after having defiled them with their uncleanness. They circumcise the Christians, and the blood of the circumcision they pour into the vases of the baptismal font...They torture people...by perforating their navels, and dragging forth the extremity of the intestines, bind it to a stake; then with flogging they lead the victim around until the viscera having gushed forth the victim falls prostrate on the ground...What shall I say about the abominable rape of women? To speak of it is worse than to be silent. On whom therefore is the labor of avenging these wrongs and recovering this territory incumbent, if not upon you?”This is the traditional explanation of how and why the First Crusade begun. Alexius Comnenus, the emperor of Byzantium, had written from his embattled capital of Constantinople to the Count of Flanders, requesting that he and his fellow Christians send forces to help the Byzantines repel the Seljuk Turks. These were recent converts to Islam who had invaded the Middle East, ambushed Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land, captured Jerusalem, and driven to within one hundred miles of Constantinople.This book counters more recent criticism that the long-ago crusades are helping to fuel modern Islamic fury. Not true. The author shows how Muslim antagonism about the Crusades did not appear until about 1900, when there was a reaction against the decline of the Ottoman Empire and against European colonialism in the Middle East. Anti-crusader feelings did not become intense until after the founding of the state of Israel in 1948.A very well-written and highly researched book.

Point: “The Crusades were not unprovoked. They were not the first round of European colonialism. They were not conducted for land, loot, or converts. The crusaders were not barbarians who victimized the cultivated Muslims. They sincerely believed that they served in God’s battalions” (kindle 3371).Path: Stark walks the other side of the fence. He reveals what is on the flip side of the coin which no one talks about anymore. I am sure that the author got tired of hearing undocumented and illogical arguments surrounding the Crusades and finally sat down and compiled arguments from the actually sources left to us.Sources: Stark pulls from sources during the Crusades until today. He sites all the popular authors on the Crusades, both from the West and Muslim world. He does so thoroughly and coherently. (I think I actually found a sentence without a footnote somewhere in there!)Agreement: I greatly appreciated reading this alternate view of the Crusades. The truth is that the Crusades were not bloodless, gentle, nor fair - on either side. But that does not mean that they were colonialistic, one-sided, brutal offensive on a peace-loving Muslim populace.Personal App: When people bring to the conversation arguments about the Crusades and why ISIS cannot be blamed for their horrific violence, I can now say, “Yes, about those Crusades…””Favorite Quote: “To sum up the prevailing wisdom: during the Crusades, an expansionist, imperialistic Christendom brutalized, looted, and colonized a tolerant and peaceful Islam. Not so. As will be seen, the Crusades were precipitated by Islamic provocations: by centuries of bloody attempts to colonize the West and by sudden new attacks on Christian pilgrims and holy places (kindle 139).It would be worth another read and I would recommend it to someone who:Is interested in historyIs interested in the Muslim world

First off, though the title doesn't make it clear, this book is based on CS6, which is what I wanted, not CC. Also, it's for the PRINTED version, not Kindle.I gladly give the book 5 stars, though maybe only 4 for some issues I've outlined further down. I've used PPro for a while now, mostly self taught, and, as is typical of us self-taught students, I realize just how little I've actually taught myself and how very inefficiently I've been working . Remembering all the great tips will take time, but it'll be time well spent.I would knock off 1 star because of some errors which are not typos, and for difficult to follow writing style in certain sections. After spending time trying to get something to work, I then realize that instead of a certain keystroke combination, the author actually meant another. Case in point: advises using Alt-left/right arrow to nudge a clip. The correct combination is actually Ctrl-left/right arrow. This is on page 168, and is repeated on the side-note on pages 170, and on pages 173 and 175 and perhaps thereafter (not sure). It's certainly not a huge deal, but I did waste a lot of time before realizing the error. In all fairness, the key combination is correctly identified in the (printable) shortcut pdf file as well as on the video, but I didn't read or watch these until after I had figured it out on my own.While all the exercises are useful, a few are somewhat difficult to follow, either because of phrasing, or because the accompanying pictures are not clearly showing what is being described. The two images on page 196 identify the same area as being two separate things, which I found confusing. Other images show the correct area of the interface, but do not highlight what the authors are trying to point out. A red circle would be great. Also, I was left mystified by the explanation on page 200, point 6. I'm sure it means something, but so far I still haven't deciphered it. Same goes for the 3rd paragraph on page 204. And the entire section starting on page 201 "Routing with Adaptive Tracks" simply left me totally confused. Maybe it's the writing, or just as likely it's a difficult topic and I simply need to go through it again more thoroughly. But in any case, at the end of it all, I was totally unsure about the WHY of the exercise, not so much the how.But again, on the positive side, the most useful part of all to me are the included practice files, without which the book would be pointless. I use Lynda.com extensively but have opted out of their premium service (due to high cost) which includes the practice files. But at $35 or so this book is a bargain, one which I can go back to again and again.The authors make a big deal out of saying this book is great for people migrating from other NLE's. And I'm sure they are correct. But don't be fooled, this book is also great for anyone with or without prior PPro knowledge (real or imagined, as in my case).I chose it above the several other options I had for two primary reasons: one, it seemed to not be just another basic how-to book for beginners, and two, it included the practice files. As a bonus there are several hours of video training (73 videos) as well which coincide with some though not all of the lessons. In retrospect maybe I should have looked at a video first before doing the accompanying exercise.I would definitely recommend this book. There may be others good ones as well, but you will not go wrong with this book.

First some background: I'm familiar with NLE editing concepts and read books on the theory of editing. I've watched training videos on editing in Premiere Pro CS 5.5 and I am fairly good around computers in general.I just finished shooting my first short film (with the help of Richard Harrington's other book "From Still to Motion: A photographer's guide to creating video with your DSLR"). Thanks to this book I am well on my way to finishing the first edit. The first time I read through the book quickly from beginning to end to get a sense of what parts I would need to read more thoroughly when I actually got to it during the editing process. In this respect the book lays out all the necessary editing tasks in a well organized manner and very quickly gets down to the brass tacks of the mechanics of how to perform your edits. This makes it great to use as a reference guide. Need to do a slip or slide edit? There are the steps. Trying to make an L-cut? It's right there.There is a lot of emphasis on learning the keyboard shortcuts--which is definitely worth memorizing--and the book even contains an appendix with many of the most commonly used shortcuts to help you.After a few days I am already able to do all my edits and changes to edits relatively quickly even with my director and writers sitting in the editing room with me.Also, I have the Kindle edition (which is also great because I can go to the table of contents or index and just click to go right to the section I need) and didn't have any trouble downloading the DVD files from the Peachpit website--the instructions are located at the VERY back of the book.

As part of the 'screw FCPX camp' I decided to make the transition from Final Cut Studio and move to Adobe's Production Premium suite - thanks to their amazing 50% discount. Final Cut Pro has been my only NLE I've used for the past 6 years. I edit a lot of live multicam events, documentaries, promotional videos, and occasionally edit feature films. Most importantly, I have hundreds of archived FCP projects that I might have to open up again.AN EDITOR's GUIDE TO ADOBE PREMIERE PRO is the best book to have for ditching FCP (or Avid) and going to Premiere Pro. Actually, I think it's the ONLY book out there that addresses the day-to-day concerns an editor would have when they start with a brand new interface. There are dedicated chapters for all the major features of Premiere Pro and constant references to FCP and Avid that makes everything easier to understand. The page layout is very pleasing to the eye, written in simple English and full of diagrams and screen captures. It's better formatted than most college text books.This is not a full comprehensive guide to all the features of the Production Premium suite, but it covers all the basic and necessary things to know from the accompanying applications such as Photoshop, Encore, After Effects, and Audition, which make using Premiere Pro more powerful than Final Cut Pro Studio and FCPX.What makes this book an even better value is the DVD that comes with it. Amazing wealth of information contained on the DVD. It enhances the reading experience. If you ever watched the Creative COW Podcasts, then you'll love the tutorials and PDFs on the DVD. I'm a big fan of the authors, Richard Harrington and Robbie Carman. I have their other books, VIDEO MADE ON A MAC and FROM STILLS TO MOTION. These guys know how to speak to editors and filmmakers better than any other instructors out there. So if you have their other books or subscribe to their Podcasts and you're now getting into Premiere Pro, GET THIS BOOK!!This book is not something you will read once and toss. i got this for a class i was taking, because it's out of print the school couldn't get anymore so i had to turn to online sources. Not only did i get it for a good amount cheaper, it was a hardback too. My only complaint was it took a lot longer to arrive then it said it would so i had to share a friends book for the first two weeks. Other than that it's a wonderful book for writing for children IF you are writing fiction, not so much nonfiction stuff.

About the Author

Carl A. Grant is Hoefs-Bascom Professor of Teacher Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University Wisconsin-Madison, and Professor in the Department of Afro American Studies. He served as President of the National Association for Multicultural Education (1993-1999), editor of Review of Educational Research (1996-1999), and member of the National Research Councils Committee on Assessment and Teacher Quality (1999-2001), has been a Fulbright Scholar in England researching and studying multicultural education, and is currently the chair of AERA Publication Committee. In 1991 Dr. Grant received the Angela Davis Race, Gender & Class Award from the Race, Gender & Class Project and the Multicultural Education Award from National Association For Mutlicultural Education; in 1997 he received the University of Wisconsin School of Education Distinguished Achievement Award. He has written or edited twenty-five books or monographs in multicultural education and/or teacher education and more than 135 articles, chapters in books, and reviews. Professor Grant In addition, he has researched and studied student achievement and multicultural education in numerous schools in the United States. Thandeka K. Chapman is Assistant Professor of Urban Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Her research focuses primarily on the implementation and documentation of multicultural education practices, the effects of school desegregation policy on urban students and teachers, and tracking student success factors in urban high schools. Dr. Chapman's other scholarly interests include ethical issues concerning the roles of the researcher in field research and the applications of critical race theory in education. Dr. Chapman was a recipient of the University of Wisconsin, Madison Graduate School Academic Opportunity Fellowship and the Carrie Barton Scholarship from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. She is also a founder of the FRONT program (Fearless Recruitment Of New Teachers) at University of Wisconsin, Madison.
