Great read, I devoured the whole thing while traveling during Spring Break.

I do not like all Koontz' books. He wrote some pretty bad ones. But this book held me spellbound. Like it often happens, both Koontz and King start out with an amazing speed, great ideas and likable, well-rounded characters, and then lose momentum and imagination towards the end.For me, this wasn't the case here. The suspense was such that I found it hard to put the book down. I kept wondering how he was going to keep all those strings (the many characters) together, and tie them up in the end, but he did. This is science fiction, which -- when good -- I love. I loved this one, with its hopeful ending. Koontz has a great talent for characterization and he writes better than many Nobel prize winners, but of course, in the world of "high literature" that will never be acknowledged!! His style flows effortlessly. And unlike some reviewers I did not find the book too long. Here and there I did think he went off on a tangent which should have been edited to be much shorter.I loved the wide range of character types he brought together cleverly.Eventually he leaves us -- and here I also disagree with one reviewer -- with the everlasting conundrum between religious belief and atheism. Is there a God greater than we can ever imagine? Or ... does the Universe run itself, sort of, and there's no Creator as such? This is definitely one of his best books. But that's just my opinion.

Really strong writing, though for such a polished novel it has some odd holes. The idea that you have point of views in the book, yet everyone has about the same high intellect level. Also, the end of the book and some twists come about as pretty generic. Where the book shines in drawing things in, I had no idea what to expect and after it was revealed left me in awe for most of the book.My first Koontz book, by the by.

I'll admit it - I am a total Koontz geek. I've never read one of his books that I didn't like. This is the second time I've read Strangers, but it's as if I read it for the first time. The characters are people I wish I knew. The story is about hope, love, friendship and facing together that which could never have been faced alone. Wonderful book!

March 3, 2015. After my fourth read: still just a wonderful as the first reading! Koontz at his very best!I am a big fan of Dean Koontz and it all started for me with this book which I read in the mid 1980'a. My reading group decided to read this book as a mini-read and I wanted to see if it still held the same allure for me. I went in knowing some of the basic plot but not the details. Once again, I had trouble putting this book down. It pulled me in just the same as it did 30 years ago. I loved the characters and their interaction with each other. When they get together there is a real sense of community; like a family. That's one of the things I really appreciated. If you have read other Koontz books and haven't tried this one yet, I highly recommend it. It has suspense, strong characters, and hope. I especially liked the indominatible spirit of the main characters. One of the most surprising aspects was realizing how much technology has advanced us since the book was first written. I kept wishing the characters had cell phones and wondered why the government wasn't using satellite pictures. When the character needed research into what had originally happened it was too bad they couldn't go on the Internet to look it up and save time. And I had to laugh when in the very beginning one of the characters is writing is novel on a word processor.

Very good book! Good story, always great characters. I like most of Dean Koontz'a work. The only thing I would say on this one is that it takes a while to really get going. There are a LOT of characters, each with a different story. It isn't until about 40% through the book that the characters start to become intertwined in the story and it all starts coming together. Then it really gets going nicely and you can't wait for the end, just like most of Koontz's work. I recommend it. If you get it, stick with it - it will be worth it.

I first read Strangers back in the early nineties at the recommendation of my brother. I remember loving the book then and recommending to others. Twenty years later, I couldn't remember much about the book except a few of the main characters and the feeling of really connecting with it.Rereading Strangers was like running into old friends at a bar and spending the night talking and reliving the past. All of the characters and development are perfect and you will finish the book wanting to go back to the bar the next night hoping your friends will be there again.

I love Dean Koontz's books. I'm giving this 4 stars because he adds so many characters, it's hard to remember who's who. Although, it's interesting and I'm curious to see how it comes together in the end. Guess I should have waited until I was finished reading it before giving my review. But I usually finish his books within 2-3 days. This one hasn't completely captured my attention.

The premise could have been interesting but, very slow going with excessive detail that (I felt) did not add to the story. On more than one occasion I contemplated not finishing the rest of the book.
