I'm surprised at the many negative reviews this book has received. Granted, it is not the place to go if you are looking for details on how CDOs were constructed or the legal ramifications of financial firms setting up SIVs. That is not what Wessel set out to do. His intention was to provide a readable account of Fed decision making during the crisis. On this count, I think he does by far the best job that I know of. This book was first published nearly two years ago as I write this review and still no one else has managed to provide a better-informed account of what the Fed was doing during this critical period. Wessel clearly had access to Bernanke and company to a greater extent than any other journalist. So, if you are looking for a narrative of why and how Bernanke made the decisions he did during the financial crisis, ignore the negative reviews and read this book.

The book does a great job at outlining the tough position the Fed was in during the crisis - but I would have liked to see greater emphasis on what Wall Street could have also done so that it doesn't appear as if the Fed bears much of the fault

A good summary of all that went on at the Fed and Treasury during the great crisis, in typical, easily-understood Wessel style. Unfortunately, it is a Wessel book - written by a journalist, who perhaps rightly stops at a recitation of the facts without delving into the context. For instance, if what passed before was a "credit bubble" with loans going to non-creditworthy activities, why the big rush to return the credit markets to their inflated state? Overall, worth reading for the facts, but you will need to go elsewhere for more information to draw your own conclusions.

Excellent book describing the career paths of Bernanke, Geithner, and Paulson, and the inner workings of The Fed, leading up to and during the financial crisis of 07-08.Unlike some of the reviews here, I found the author to be highly critical of Bernanke, but it is true, in the final analysis, almost on the last page, he comes out in Bernanke's support. No mercy for Greenspan though, and heres the contradiction at the books core.He tells us that Bernanke supported Greenspan early on and throughout Greenspans last days. Then he tries to make us forget that fact, and portrays Bernanke as a late entry who merely came in to clean up the mess.Like me, if you want to believe that Bernanke is a demon representing imperialism, debt slavery, and the NWO, this book is still a valuable and very interesting read.I for one was enlightened on how the Fed buys and sells bonds depending on how much money they want in the system. He tries to let Bernanke off the hook by claiming that it wasn't the Feds responsibility to know about the non banking financial institutions that largely led to the crisis.;its an argument I can't buy.I for one, although not being a Lyndon Larouche fan, DO remember Larouche and other way back when talking about the derivatives bubble and the housing crisis, so theres no way I believe that the nations top mainstream economists weren't aware of it,whether it was their job to be aware of it or not.Even I knew that interest rates were being held too low. I deliberately bought the cheapest house I could back in 2000, taking out only 105k, when offered 300. This book is a good starting place for those like myself who would learn of the financial systems inner workings, couple it like I di with Ron Paul's, End the Fed.

The best exposition of the events constituting the Great Panic that I have yet read, and written in a "watch it happening now" style that I found hard to put down. I have a much better appreciation of how complex our financial system is today. It is so much so that our most experienced and studied experts found it difficult to trace the effects of the housing bubble collapse, much less predict its course and intervene effectively. It makes the future look to me even more fraught with uncertainty.

The item was "new", as stated in the item description. There were no marks or highlighted portions within the book that I noticed. I was overall very happy with the product and the shipping time. I look forward to using it and reading it for this semester in school.
