About the Author

Carl A. Grant is Hoefs-Bascom Professor of Teacher Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University Wisconsin-Madison, and Professor in the Department of Afro American Studies. He served as President of the National Association for Multicultural Education (1993-1999), editor of Review of Educational Research (1996-1999), and member of the National Research Councils Committee on Assessment and Teacher Quality (1999-2001), has been a Fulbright Scholar in England researching and studying multicultural education, and is currently the chair of AERA Publication Committee. In 1991 Dr. Grant received the Angela Davis Race, Gender & Class Award from the Race, Gender & Class Project and the Multicultural Education Award from National Association For Mutlicultural Education; in 1997 he received the University of Wisconsin School of Education Distinguished Achievement Award. He has written or edited twenty-five books or monographs in multicultural education and/or teacher education and more than 135 articles, chapters in books, and reviews. Professor Grant In addition, he has researched and studied student achievement and multicultural education in numerous schools in the United States. Thandeka K. Chapman is Assistant Professor of Urban Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Her research focuses primarily on the implementation and documentation of multicultural education practices, the effects of school desegregation policy on urban students and teachers, and tracking student success factors in urban high schools. Dr. Chapman's other scholarly interests include ethical issues concerning the roles of the researcher in field research and the applications of critical race theory in education. Dr. Chapman was a recipient of the University of Wisconsin, Madison Graduate School Academic Opportunity Fellowship and the Carrie Barton Scholarship from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. She is also a founder of the FRONT program (Fearless Recruitment Of New Teachers) at University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Shannon Scarlett, a registered architect, has worked for over thirty years in the Boston area. Her practice focuses primarily on residential projects, additions, renovations, new house plans... And Scarlett's book brings those design concepts to the fore in a neat, solid, all-in-one volume. `Simple Rules', therefore, have a great practical use for all types of designers--and by "designer" I refer to everyone who uses design ideas to make a place better--from professional architects to adventurous home-owners who just want to give their home better character.Scarlett has closely studied the design principles from as far back as the 18th century, and selected those she found exceptional and worth salvaging. This booklet condense a number of "rules" of architecture found in classical works. Interesting to read and supported by quality pictures of architecture.

I expected a book on building construction. Instead, I held in my hand a quite readable book with the rare merging of art and science. I now fully understand why we pay architects money to transform a boxy plan in our heads to something both functional and beautiful. This will be a rare book in my collection because I plan to buy the paperback as well.

As an author, I'm always on the look out for excellent reference materials. This book is one of the few which have been written precise, informative but quite entertaining. The author did an excellent job writing a technical book in such an interesting fashion.GREAT JOB!

A succinct summary of basic design principles. Treats ideas commonly forgotten in a 'form follows function world'. Concise and readable.

Great concise guide to many important concepts of good design.

I would not consider this a book. it is a collection of quotes mostly. pictures are tiny and I can't zoom in on them. What a disappointment and waste of my money.

I found the tips and guides in the book to be practical and accurate. It is a must have for all homeowners. The only drawback is the lack of clarity of the illustrations on Kindle.I will endeavour to get a hardcopy.
