About the Author

Shannon Scarlett, a registered architect, has worked for over thirty years in the Boston area. Her practice focuses primarily on residential projects, additions, renovations, new house plans... Ms. Scarlett believes it is imperative that architects take a leading role in helping educate the general public--especially those interested in good design, but having no idea where to begin, be it homeowners, builders, or architecture students. It is only a first step, but knowledge itself has great potential for improving the aesthetics, meaning and overall feel of our currently uninspired living environments. On the Simple Rules description page, she posed a question and would love to hear peoples thoughts. "What are your thoughts on the design quality of the average American home?" Her Response: "As the author of Simple Rules, my opinion is already clear. I believe we can do better, but we need the tools to get there. I'd love to hear what other avenues people might suggest we take to improve the suburban experience." Check it out if you are thinking about, or in the process of building a new house; drafting or drawing your own house plans; if you are a carpenter or house plan designer looking for an easy to use builder design guide; or if you simply have an interest in house design or love of architecture.

Boston-based architect Shannon Scarlett has written something that I believe will influence current and future designers. `Simple Rules' is more or less a detailed discussion of how people designed and built structures in the past few centuries. As you know, designers do not really create something out of thin air--they basically survey what has been made and when, and build from there. In the same way current thinkers and writers stand on the shoulders of literary giants before them, designers are also deeply indebted to the long-gone geniuses who created those palatial homes, monuments, and other staggeringly beautiful structures that still drop our jaws today. And Scarlett's book brings those design concepts to the fore in a neat, solid, all-in-one volume. `Simple Rules', therefore, have a great practical use for all types of designers--and by "designer" I refer to everyone who uses design ideas to make a place better--from professional architects to adventurous home-owners who just want to give their home better character.Scarlett has closely studied the design principles from as far back as the 18th century, and selected those she found exceptional and worth salvaging. And by bringing these time-tested design concepts to the attention and perusal of the modern reader, we can expect to witness a resurgence in design innovation--who knows what creative mind will read this book and, out of the designs found here, create something utterly new and astonishing. The good news is that this is apparently the first book in a series--and if the subsequent titles are as good as this one, I have good reason to believe Shannon Scarlett is starting something phenomenal for the field of design, in the same way Strunk and White did with English grammar with their book `Elements of Style' many decades ago. A resounding five stars!

This booklet condense a number of "rules" of architecture found in classical works. Interesting to read and supported by quality pictures of architecture.

I expected a book on building construction. Instead, I held in my hand a quite readable book with the rare merging of art and science. I now fully understand why we pay architects money to transform a boxy plan in our heads to something both functional and beautiful. This will be a rare book in my collection because I plan to buy the paperback as well.

As an author, I'm always on the look out for excellent reference materials. This book is one of the few which have been written precise, informative but quite entertaining. The author did an excellent job writing a technical book in such an interesting fashion.GREAT JOB!

A succinct summary of basic design principles. Treats ideas commonly forgotten in a 'form follows function world'. Concise and readable.

Great concise guide to many important concepts of good design.

I would not consider this a book. it is a collection of quotes mostly. pictures are tiny and I can't zoom in on them. What a disappointment and waste of my money.

I found the tips and guides in the book to be practical and accurate. It is a must have for all homeowners. The only drawback is the lack of clarity of the illustrations on Kindle.I will endeavour to get a hardcopy.
