Review

At the time that The New Reaction was published in 2015, Rachel Haywire was considered one of the brightest – and most unique – voices amongst the American dissident avant-garde. With her electrifying prose, she exposed many of us to the mysterious contours of intellectual perversion, and artistic defiance hidden in spaces not too far from the battlements that marked the frontlines of our ongoing war against the modern world.Rachel Haywire wandered the forest enjoying her solitude, only just recently emerging with a better appreciation of her unique voice as it sings the siren of the Art Right: a call to restore nature’s beauty and brutality to the ways we think, act, and create. Equal parts Futurist theater, affective art project, and hushed late-night conversation with knowing friends in the darkest corner of an after-hours speakeasy, this new and expanded edition of The New Reaction is Rachel Haywire at her best. With nine essays not included in the first edition, three of which debut here and speak of the radical potential of the Art Right, The New Reaction is a reminder that polished stones still ache to be thrown through windows. No longer a statement of uneasy belonging, The New Reaction is instead a call for the explosive creation of a new people: of “aristopunks,” “homo futura,” a “dark Bohemia;” and to make of ourselves “living works of art.” - Mark Dyal, author of Hated and Proud: Ultras Contra Modernity (Arktos, 2108)

I really loved reading this book. For me, it was a window into a world I have little experience with and that gave me so much to think about. It’s the same feeling I got when I first encountered Camille Paglia in the 90s. Her unique and passionate perspectives on the arts and popular culture made my brain grow new pathways of thought and that is when I know I’m reading something important and valuable. This book is, likewise, a banquet of thought-provoking and mind-stretching treats—both sweet and savory. As the old saying goes: “A mind, once expanded by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions.” Like Paglia, Rachel challenges us to stretch past our comfortable cognitive and physical comfort zones. Challenge taboos. “Be a winner, not a whiner.” Be a bold adventurer, rather than a meek and fearful victim who embraces the proposition that they can be psychically damaged by unsettling words or ideas. Rachel embraces anarchy, chaos, and kink, not the safety of the “Great Hugbox and its 50 shades of not-so-risqué.” From the book: “We must teach the new generation that all forms of thought are worth discussing. From the furthest Left to the furthest Right, the point here is intellectual exploration. A thriving intelligentsia must have nothing taboo and be open to the most challenging areas of both philosophical and political discussion.” Rachel describes herself as a “psychotic extremist and irrational bohemian hipster chick” who envisions an intellectual “scene full of philosophers, artists, musicians, occultists, and writers with a common ideal” to create a their own “empire of the mind.” Although a like-minded coalition, they retain their quirks, their unique perspectives, and their non-neuro-typicality. Different kinds of minds is what Rachel seeks. Artists and philosophers don’t think about “the group” and don’t align with “the mass-mind swimming along with the current.” Being a transhumanist, this book also contains some pleasing mind-music for my mind’s-ear: “Society will never be perfect because man is imperfect…So why not change the nature of man?” Rachel puts the transhumanist twist on the dreaded trigger-word, eugenics. Her perspective, called National Futurism, “is not about eugenics in the sense that it weeds people out. National Futurism weeds people in…Hitler’s idea of an Aryan master race is genetics for the pre-school crowd. It’s now time for us to graduate with honors.” She advocates “fully rebooting the species”…so that we can become a “higher race of non-slaves…Human nature is a problem, and we must fix it in order to transcend our petty hate machine.” She calls this “second human race…homo futura…homo superior.” As a writer myself, I also appreciate her poetic and metaphorical style of expression—which exercises my mind’s abstract-thought and aesthetics muscles in pleasing ways. “To an artist a Metaphor is as real as a dollar.”—Tom Robbins. I predict this book will enrich your mind, if you let it…if you entertain even its most challenging and disquieting ideas, you can find many things of value and inspiration. As Rachel exclaims in the Preface: “Rejoice! There may be something horrible to find. Just to understand this state of mind.”

"A specter is haunting America. The specter of the Art Right." Does this subversion of Marx's opening line to the Communist Manifesto strike you as laughable? Why? Is it because every reference to it is now inherently farcical after first appearing on the stage of history as tragedy? Is it that the Art Right is hitherto not really a movement? If your answer is the former, I can't argue. If your answer is the latter, I say: the Communist movement didn't really exist before Marx declared it did. It was a group of disaffected and very pissed off intellectuals declaring they had a movement. First as dream, then as reality. This book exists for much the same purpose: to give an identity and a purpose to a current that exists, but without a name or recognition. The great many that are disenchanted with the utopian dreams of both Right and Left need a cause, and its prophet is none other than Rachel Haywire, here to sing the praises of an alternative that is neither right nor left, but free and creative. If you find the PC police annoying but Jordan Peterson's 90s version of common sense masquerading as revolutionary thought trite, this book is for you. This book finds Ms. Haywire in rare form. Her style has evolved over the years and become vastly more accessible, while still dense with ideas and content. Heresy after heresy is dispensed, groupthink taboos of all political factions subverted, and sacred cows are served breathing-to-rare. Equal parts call to arms and motivational sermon, it is a book for all those who feel adrift and like they don't belong in any of the modern cliques. For the true individuals, the ones too individualistic to join groups calling themselves, for example, "Freethinkers."As many of the essays are now a few years old, we can see that Haywire has in many places been prescient, and in others less so, as she predicted a revolution of the minds that has instead been subverted by the centrist thinkers that pretend to be revolutionary. This doesn't mean that the revolution shouldn't have happened. It can, should, and might, if enough commit themselves to the creative spirit of actual anarchy over political anarchy. In summary, this book offers that rarest of finds: original thought. If you like that, I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you'd instead prefer to hear that your identity politics matter or that being "rational" makes you a revolutionary, stick with any of the talking heads filling your Facebook feed. We're on the side of the gods, which is to say, ourselves.

This book takes a rare and unfiltered look at how the modern safe space mentality stifles free thought and creativity. This is not a book by or for right or left thinkers, it's for thinkers period. If you feel stifled by the modern need for rigid categorizations with their specific rules and it's social and political landmines this is for you. I believe if Camillia Paglia and Jordan Peterson had a child who learned the best parts of their philosophy but then turned out to be a rebellious artist and remade it for a new vibrant creative scene this would be it.This book will make you think, and even when you disagree with something, it will make you understand.Well written and a lot of knowledge in a quick read...recomend

I am a musician and artist that has become totally disenfranchised with the authoritarian, and very closed-minded modern left. I watched my friends become mindless, droning, intolerant zombies while they flipped on many key issues that they once held dear. The alt right is obsessed with trad culture and have very little room for the abstract. Unless you’re a classical sculptor or painter, it’s more likely than not that they’ll call your work degenerate. The New Art Right breaks all this down and analyzes it in a very intuitive and clever way. Rachel Haywire opens a great window into the modern landscape of politics and culture, providing a new space and outlook for people to express themselves freely.
