My three year old is both terrified and obsessed with this story! Bill Peet is one of my all time favorites, and slowly but surely I am trying to collect them all. I bought this one for my 8 year old, but it is the little guys who loves it. Something about that Owl-Eyed Ogre.....he is totally captivated. He is the type of child to ask me to read book after book, but rarely the same one again right away, but this one he BEGS me to read again as soon as it is done. He covers his eyes with his blankey when the scary parts come up, peeking just enough. I can't help myself from emphasizing the really dramatic parts, just to really get him going! Bill Peet is obviously a gifted man who understands children and writes books that are easy and fun to read. I wonder if he read his books out loud before finalizing them?? They are all so well written, whether in rhyme or not(this one is not), and have such a natural flow to them. They are easy to get into, and just such a pleasure to read. After refusing to read this one out loud AGAIN last night, my son picked out a new popular book, "Dragons Love Tacos," which I really don't care for to begin with, but as a follow up to Peet's Clyde, it really looked and sounded lame and downright pathetic! It really made me appreciate this book even more! There are plenty of cute, catchy popular new books on the market, and don't get me wrong we do have and love many of them, but there is something about a classic tale like this, moral and eloquent as all Peet's books are, full of magic and wonder. Like a modern but timeless fairytale....complete with silly sound effects:)

Bill Peet is one of my favorite kids book authors. I read these as a kid, got them for my kids, nieces and nephews and have put away a set for for my grandchildren someday. The stories and characters are always well designed and draw kids in. The illustrations are bright and colorful while still being somewhat simplistic giving them a lovable cartoon appearance. The stories have great moral and life lessons told in a fun way. These stories have stood the test of time and have been loved by many in my family

as a grandmother, i have owned this book - now three times. my children loved it so much that my son took it to college with him to always feel the happiness we had when reading it together. i still own a copy and just bought a book for my grandson. i have a picture on my wall of my daughter reading it to my grandson. he frequently says :kerpuffle when things go the way he wants them to. it is a wonderful story of overcoming things that you may not know you can do and then find out then you certainly can! great fantasy and learning book!

Sir Galavant, the dim-witted noodle head (his words, not mine), is so gung-ho on finding a horrible ogre to defeat, that when he does find one he races in without a thought. Clyde, his noble and also fearful steed, sees the foolishness in this but won’t be able to do a thing about it unless he can work up the courage and act… or at least just act. Kids may learn, in this story, that behaving bravely is maybe just about as good as being brave. All my kids love this story and I don’t mind reading it, for the lesson and for the fun.

Bill Peet has been a family favorite author since 1978. I read them to my son in the 70's. Bought every one I could find for my grandchildren, and now am purchasing for that same son's newly arrived twin boys. I recently asked my first three grandchildren if they still had their Bill Peet books and discovered that they plan to NEVER (said emphatically) get rid of them. In addition, they are still read because they take them on babysitting jobs to read to their charges who also LOVE them.

This is a great story about facing one's fears and being brave for the sake of a friend. It's one of my 7-year-old grandson's favorites. The illustrations are cute, too.

My grandsons love hearing this story read to them every time they visit. Good lesson on having courage even when you're not feelin' it.

This was perhaps my favourite book before third grade, and it is my son's first pick also. I hope more kids get to read it. Bill Peet books all typically have a good morale built into clever verbiage.

Sam Wasson's just-released and delightful book on the making of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is so chock-full of great anecdotes that you're sorry when it's over. For awhile, you are there - a privileged insider-witness to a marvelous bygone moment in moviemaking history - and it's with a feeling of bittersweet regret that you step from its closing pages back into a realm of noisy 3D sequels and superfluous comic book franchises. Everything you'd want to know and more is delivered in the book, from the reader's coverage producer Marty Jurow was first handed, re: adapting Capote's book for the screen ("In any event this is more of a character sketch than a story. NOT RECOMMENDED") to the guest list for the post-premiere party (including such unlikely elbow-rubbers as Dennis Hopper, Buster Keaton, Charles Laughton, and Jane Mansfield).A delicious through-line in the book is how close the movie came to not coming out so well as it did, with such jaw-droppers as everyone's resistance to having Henry Mancini write a song for the thing (eventual collaborator Johnny Mercer's original lyric, we learn, one of three eventually presented to Mancini, was called "Blue River"). An intimate exploration of the myriad personalities in conflict and collusion when a casual classic is being created, the book is cannily adept at detailing the logic of the so many minute decisions that lead to what we now accept as inevitable. Of course Audrey Hepburn played Holly Golightly, you think, until you hear how hard Capote lobbied for Marilyn Monroe.Wasson is a formidable researcher. He doesn't so much know where the bodies are buried as he knows where the hearts and minds are hidden. The book is written like a good novel, taking you inside the consciousness of its characters with an impressive, insight-laden believability ("Fifth Avenue"'s only recent movie-book rival in this regard is Mark Harris' fascinating "Pictures at a Revolution"). And Wasson's notes on how he arrived at, and can justify, his leaps of imagination and empathy are almost as interesting as the text itself.Of course the book has its thesis and theories as well, positing "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and Hepburn's stylish, fresh, era-defining performance as a watershed moment in cultural history. If you're a fan of Audrey Hepburn, the book is a must-have, because Wasson's astute take on what she was about, what she was up against, and how she delivered the goods strikes me as definitive. Her spritely, near-angelic spirit comes alive in the pages of this eminently devour-able book, which is kind of an awesome dividend.

This well-written book goes behind the scenes of casting, filming, and directing "Breakfast at Tiffany's." It provides backstories of backstories as it reveals the attitudes of writers and screenwriters toward the actors cast in the various roles and of the actors and directors toward the screenplay and the necessary modifications to it. After reading this book, you will never view the film in the same way again.

This is a great short read. Entertaining, interesting, breezily written with lots of interesting behind-the-scene details. For sure, there was a great contrast between the book and the screenplay. I prefer the movie version, although Capote wrote gorgeous prose in his early books. I just like happy endings. Interesting about Peppard. I won't spoil it for you, though. The book is short. I would have loved more scoops, but apparently there wasn't much more to say, and who needs filler.

The book goes behind the scenes to show how the producers secured the rights to the book from Capote (they mislead him about casting), how they got the basic storyline (a female prostitute and a male prostitute bond) past the censors, and the trials and tribulations of dealing with the stars (Hepburn, under the influence of her jealous husband lacked self-confidence, while Peppard thought he knew everything), shooting in New York, and getting the music for the movie sorted out (Mancini wrote Moon River specifically for Hepburn’s limited vocal range and the studio tried to cut the song from the movie). The book also showed how Breakfast at Tiffany’s contributed to the development of the romantic comedy genre from films featuring busty women with clueless men (called “Boobs and boobs” films) to smart witty dialog driven films. If you’re at all a fan of the movie, or Hepburn, or film, I think you’ll enjoy this book.

This well-researched and well-written book was hard to put down. It explains what was going on while BAT was being written and made into a movie. George Peppard was NOT the first or even second choice, Truman Capote did NOT like Audrey Hepburn, and politics of the time almost killed it. A brief glimpse into a certain time in the history of pop culture that defined an era and still informs women's place in society.

If you are into film, or love Audrey Hepburn, love fashion, or want a good slice of American history circa 1960, this is a very fun read. My wife and I watched "Breakfast At Tiffany's" the other night, and I was really surprised at how good the film still is. There are bad moments, of course, like the terribly outdated role that Mickie Rooney plays as a Japanese photographer, which was uncalled for. But the film is still a very classic piece of work, and very modern. The party scene in her apartment is worth watching the movie alone.I thought I'd read the novel by Capote. Discovered this new book that just came out, and doing a lot of film work, thought I'd give it a read. It was *much* better than I thought it would be. A great overview of the back story of the making of the movie, the intrigue, the technical issues that were solved, and of course, a lot of discussion of the various actors and actresses that made it what it was. Different audiences can read this for different reasons. I was more interested in the films technical overview, how it got made. I wasn't so much interested in the 'making of the modern woman' but the issues it raises are interesting. But the back story was really worth price of admission alone. From the choice of actors, the changing of the script, the role that Blake Edwards brought to it, the way it affected American women and their fashions, the creation of "Moon River" and other interesting tidbits, the writing is crisp and keeps you moving. If you got this far, just get it. I highly recommend this book.

Feminist Baby, by Loryn Brantz

From School Library Journal

Baby-Toddler—Adapted from Brantz's viral comic, this charming board book will amuse budding feminists and their adults. The title character refuses to be limited by gender stereotypes. She loves pink and blue; she plays with dolls and cars. The rambunctious little one revels in her body, her love of music, and her absolute baby-ness. The rhyming text is singsong and makes for a great read-aloud. The large, expressive eyes; bold lines and font; and bright, cartoonish illustrations will delight the youngest of readers. The strong girl power message makes feminism and following your dreams accessible to toddlers. The final image, of Feminist Baby in Rosie the Riveter–inspired garb, will elicit chuckles and bring the message home. VERDICT A laugh-out-loud, smart, and much-needed addition to board book collections.—Shelley M. Diaz, School Library Journal

Review

"Not that you should have a baby for the sole purposes of reading a book to him or her, but if I were to do that it would be because of Feminist Baby. It's cute, inspiring, and a reminder that before society places boundaries on what girls are supposed to do and be like, girls can be anything, including empowered."―Phoebe Robinson, New York Times best-selling author of You Can't Touch My Hair"Feminist Baby makes me want to get pregnant again immediately just so I have one more kid to share this wonderful book with. No child's bookshelf is complete without it."―Jessica Valenti, Guardian columnist & New York Times best-selling feminist author"Forget sugar & spice-fun & fierce, that's what Feminist Baby is made of!"―Debbie Levy, award-winning author of I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark"FINALLY! Feminism for the board-book set! Feminist Baby is cute, funny, right-on, and kind of almost makes me want to have another baby just so she can grow up reading it. That's not gonna happen, though, so I'll settle for getting for every mama-to-be and new baby I know."―Kate Schatz, author of the New York Times bestsellers Rad American Women A-Z and Rad Women Worldwide"Feminist Baby is for girls, boys, moms and dads. If you want your little person to grow up to a be a full and equal person, Feminist Baby is for you."―Rose McGowan, Activist/Director/Artist"With a palette as brash as her heroine, Brantz pictures this boundary-free little one as a big-eyed, roly-poly dumpling, usually not wearing any more than a diaper and a hair bow. It's just the thing to encourage kids to be loud, proud, and uncowed."―Publishers Weekly"The strong girl power message makes feminism and following your dreams accessible to toddlers. . . . A laugh-out-loud, smart, and much-needed addition to board book collections."―School Library Journal"Feminist Baby is unexpectedly charming and warm. Pictures, here, really are worth a thousand words as Loryn Brantz does the important work of making feminism accessible with a keen understanding of what kids need to know about feminism in their young lives. Even as an adult, I found myself utterly delighted from one page to the next. Feminist Baby is not just for babies. It's for all of us. (But mostly, it's for babies.)"―Roxane Gay, New York Times best-selling author of Bad Feminist

I really wanted to like this book-I had purchased it for my nephew's 1st birthday. The art and colors were great but the take away from the "story" seems to be brattiness not feminism. There are lines about how "feminist baby...throws her toys because she wants to". As a feminist, I feel there is no real connection to feminism within this book.

I have three daughters under the age of 8 and all three of them love it! We actually bought it for my baby niece, but my own kids have enjoyed it a lot! Fun book, great illustrations!

My baby loves this book. Always smiles when she looks at the illustrations or hears “feminist baby”

Meh. Not my fave.

This book is so adorable. It has bright colors to captivate your little one and a great message! My daughter loves it.

Love the message, fun to read

Would be better if feminist baby was not only female.

I was so excited for this book after reading a write-up and seeing some promotional panels that I thought were examples of what was in this book. (Example: Baby at birth and parents say "She's beautiful" and feminist baby responds "I'm smart and capable too!" I ordered immediately! I was disappointed to find the actual book depicts baby with no pants, throwing up, and throwing toys. I love the initial messages where feminist baby can do what she likes (dance!) and like what she likes (pink AND blue!) but the follow-up frames really miss an opportunity to help feminist baby grow to be a strong, open-minded individual who recognizes all the paths available to her. I don't understand what throwing toys has to do with a positive feminist message.

Overall this is a good anthology. Review by story:1. Cold Case. 5/5It's a good story even if it does have some continuity snarls. It helps show some of the ways Molly has changed now that she is Winter Lady.2. Sleepover. 6/5This story is the surprise MVP for me. I have never read anything my Seanan Mcguire but after reading Sleepover i have ordered a few of her “InCryptid” books. Now to the actual story; it's very well paced with a whole lot of world building hooks which allow the story to seem like it actually inhabits a real setting. The characters are likable and the plot relies more on the characters then on flash or fighting.3. If Wishes Were. 3/5The story is a little bit cliche. The main character seems somewhat overpowered to me. i will admit the story did not interest me enough to research if it takes place in a larger setting where the character would be justified to be as powerful as it is. Other than that, the mains love interest is flat, the initial antagonist seems like just an excuse to start the plot. And finally, the main antagonist while being extremely powerful (for reasons, and in a way, that makes way more sense then the main character) it is still defeated without difficulty via deus ex machina.4. Solus. 3/5Simple description? Men in Black meets The Dresden Files. Only problem is, it feels like you're following around the B team from either setting. It's a bit wacky mixed with “Magic A is Magic A”.5. Peacock in Hell. 4/5This one is a weird one to go into without any prior knowledge. It's like someone took “Bartimaeus Sequence” series of books and gave it a pack of cigarettes to make it more “edgy”. Don't get me wrong it's done well, but it seems like it's trying a bit too hard to by grown up when it's not. Also, maybe placing this story right after the wacky story in the anthology might not have been the best place for it as far as tone is concerned.6. Eye of newt. 1/5Nope. I got through 4 pages of cringe and decided this story is not for me.7. What dwells within 2/5Who doesn't like a telepathic Ferret as a main character…. Me it turns out. I am guessing this story is part of a larger series but it does a really bad example of getting a new person involved with the setting.8. Hunter healer 4/5This story reads like a “day in the limelight” for a background NPC. It has good execution, and when read from the point of view that it's a minor character getting some development the story is good.9. Baggage. 5/5This one is good, even if it is ostensibly about superheroes. Sadly it is not part of a larger series instead the author has floated the characters/setting out on a few anthologies and is planning on trying to make it a comic if there is enough interest. It's a bit modern noir mixed with a thriller.10. Sales. Force. 4/5This story is good, but if it was a full book it would probably outstay its welcome. The main character is a monster, not in the literal sense but rather she is a psychopathic killer with little regard to normal human characterization. That kind of amoral killer that is sometimes fun to see in limited, Controlled, settings along the lines of “yes, but she’s OUR monster”. That being said there doesn't seem to be much in the terms of control or humanization here.11. Impossible monsters 5/5THIS is how you do an amoral psychopathic killer right. This is a monster aimed at other monsters. It also part of a larger series “cal leandros”. Overall it does a good enough job of explaining the character and world that it's understandable to a new reader. Additionally, it has enough character and world setting to really pull a new reader in.

I liked all of the stories. The one that I wasn't as engrossed with as the others was Kevin J. Anderson's zombie detective. Not that it was bad, but it is based more in humor than the other stories. As always, I love a story about Dresden or his former apprentice Molly.I was pleasantly surprised to see a story about Vicki Nelson by Tanya Huff. It has been a long time since I read the "Blood Ties" series or even watched the TV show based on the books but it was very easy and fun getting back into her story. As for the other stories, all of them have me interested in looking into the other short stories and, hopefully, books that the authors have written.

To be fully honest I was interested in this book mainly because it had a story by Jim Butcher and I am always happy to find a new Dresden Files story. This is an anthology that contains 10 short stories all based around the same theme. Each story is based on the idea of good and evil, two aspects of the character and how complicated it can be to live as one or the other. The rating is based on the average of all 10 stories.Cold Case by Jim Butcher: 3.5 starsThe story is about Molly Carpenter in her capacity as the new Winter Lady. Mab has sent her to collect a tribute from a small group of Fae, the Miksani, in Unalaska. There is something odd going on in the town and it may cause trouble for what she needs to do. Carlos Ramirez also happens to be in town which makes it even more clear that there is a problem in the town that cold make the Winter Ladies job even harder. The characters are just as well drawn here as if they were simply pulled away from their lives in Chicago and the never-never. The new characters are a little hazy and their place in the Fae world are not very clear. The story is enjoyable if a little slower than expected. There is also no appearance by Harry, this is strictly about our Molly and the lesson that Mab has to teach her.Sleepover by Seanan McGuire: 3.0 starsElsinora 'Elsie' Harrington is half human/half succubus in a world that does not really know that supernaturals live among them. Elsie is at a roller derby match rooting for her cousin when she meets a pretty girl and does something totally silly, she follows her out without telling anyone. Before she can formulate a thought she is drugged and taken away by a group of teenage boys who want her to get back the sister of one of the boys. The characters are a little dull and boring but they still manage to keep you reading. The story has not real snap to it but you can push through and find something interesting in what the are doing. Not sure it really fits the theme. If Wishes Were by Tanya Huff: 2 starsVicki Nelson is a detective who also happens to be a vampire, though this does not seem to have any bearing on anything. When a woman comes to her about a lamp she has found which contained a Jinn, she wants help to set things right. The problem is that she is tricked into doing just what the Jinn wants. Vicki makes an attempt to handle it on her own with less than satisfactory results.Truth be told this was one of my least favorite stories. I could see potential but it never materialized. I was bored with it almost from the start and it never got better for me.Solus by Anton Strout: 2 starsThe Department of Extraordinary Affairs-Other Division goes to investigate the claims of ghosts in a castle. They found the ghost of a lonely young woman, Agatha Sedgwick, who was haunting the castle.I was so bored I cannot even remember anything much about this story. I actually went to sleep while reading it so draw your own conclusions.Peacock in Hell by Kat Richardson: 3.5 starsEmily Ann Peacock is half dead and a master thief. She is sent into Hell to rescue Lenny Red Mane for a sketchy character named Peter Fiori. What she finds is though Lenny may be the one in Hell she is working for a devil. The thing is what can she do about it.I really liked this story and the characters. They held my attention and made me like them and the situation they found themselves in. This is a good one.Eye of Newt, A Dan Shambles Zombie P.I. by Kevin J. Anderson: 2.5 starsDan Shambles has a new client, a newt named Geck who comes to him because there seems to be a hit out on him. He was attacked and one of his eyes was taken out. He needs help and Dan goes on the case. This was a nice story with a different kind of hero and a different kind of world. What Dwells Within by Lucy A Snyder: 3 starsJesse Shimmer, a magic user and his ferret familiar Pal are outlaws in the magic community. When a friend of hers is compelled to kill himself and his girlfriend is taken Jesse steps in to help. She is very good at killing devils and this one needs it more than most.Nice short story that holds your interest and makes you want to know more about the characters.Hunter Healer by Jim C. Hines: 4 starsJulia Chapel ran from a life that she could not live any longer. Now she is a Healer who has an assistant who is a hearth fairy, Hob. Terrence Chapel is Julia's father and a Hunter, he is also the reason that Julia ran away. Julia had a twin sister, who was a very good Hunter, but now her sister resides within her making Julia double souled. When a Harvester comes to her it is only to gain her attention because it also leads a rogue hunter named Shard to her, and he wants to be the only one with a double soul.Good story that draws you in and sets up the back story in a quick and effective way. The characters are well fleshed and give you a good look at who they are and can be. I enjoyed this one a lot.Baggage by Erik Scott de Bie: 3 starsVivienne Cain, aka Lady Vengeance, former demon possessed super-villain turned edgy it-girl superhero turned fugitive from vigilante justice. She is a high functioning alcoholic who uses the drinking to keep her powers under control. V has been going to a gym working through some of her frustrations for a while when she senses a demon lurking about. As V becomes friends with a girl at the gym the demon gives glimpses of itself but never fully shows itself.I really like the character of V but she is never as fleshed out as I would like her to be. None of the other characters are very fleshed out either and the story is a little thin. But it was still a good read.Sales.Force. by Kristine Kathryn Rusch: 3.5 starsKaylee loses her fiancee, Dex, in a car accident after he has sworn that they would be together forever. Kaylee had not worked very much while she and Dex were together, her job is killing evil supernaturals. Kaylee goes back to work after only a week and her boss gives her an assignment that is not exactly up her alley, she is sent to investigate, not kill. When she looks into a love potion it may be the best thing for her.Good story premise with characters who are likeable and make me willing to see more of in a longer version.Impossible Monsters by Rob Thurman: 4 stars"Infernally heroic Caliban Leandros takes a trip down memory lane as he deals with some overdue-and nightmarish vengeance involving some quite nasty Impossible Monsters". Caliban has two lists, one that his brother made for him in order to keep him from doing something unforgivable and inhuman. The other list is one he has made for himself that has the names of people who have done things he feels are wrong but that he wants to give them a chance to change. It's time for him to start working on that second list.I totally like the Caliban and plan to read the books which can give me a closer and deeper look into who and what he is.Like with most anthologies this one has good, bad, and iffy stories in it. What did not work for me might work for someone else just as what I liked might not be as good for another. I would recommend this to anyone who likes urban fantasy.
